Wonderful documentary of the production process of the Pz.Kwg III and the StuG III. Although quite expensive the tank itself was considered by the Germans that it had better off road capability than the Pz.Kwg III. The tank had limited development and and because it's relatively small size it couldn't be fitted with a bigger cannon so basically the last main battle was the battle of Kursk. The StuG III was produced until the final day of the of war. The last production was at the giant factory at Marienfiel just outside of Berlin.

      @paoloviti6156 4 года назад +4

@@briandonavan2872 the cannon 7.5 cm StuK 40 L/48 of the StuG III was already a tight fit and altrough quite successful it was not possible to install the much more powerful cannon namely the 7.5 cm PaK 42 L/70 (the same for the Panther but without muzzle break). To use this cannon it was created the Jagdpanzer IV but it was not an overall success because of the excessive weight of the long barrel stressing the front pairs of suspensions and wheels, limited off road capability and some other issues.

Calm down wehraboo. Germany couldn't even mass produce ONE four engined bomber, the US pumped them out by the hour, with plants capable of rolling out one B-24 every hour.
As for tanks, their most produced tank - the Panther - was plagued by defects due to the rushed nature of the project, with about 6000 units built. By comparison, the Sherman was producted in 49,234 units.
So no, Germany was quite well matched at the time, and today it's not even worth arguing, what the hell are you smoking.
One area where Germany peaked was their research of aerodynamics and rocket propulsion, with nazi germany's largest wind tunnels being still in use today. And the space race was in large part aided by german scientists.
But at the same time nazi germany was so limited in production capability most of their logistics were on horseback for all the war, because they couldn't build enough trucks.

Obsessed with perfection the Germans ended up overengineering in their warlike equipment . Much resources were wasted where they were not needed . Complex mechanisms were not simplified to speed up production .... Unlike the Soviet union which laid a balanced emphasis on numbers and quality . Ultimately the Russians swarmed the battlefield with increasingly larger number of war like equipment especially tanks ( T-34s) and artillery.... The nominal advantage that the Gernmans had due to technology were lost to these Soviet numbers . " Quantity is also a quality " went the communist saying .
An example is the mechanism that was used to retain tank tracks in place in T34 s .... The Russians had a simple block that pushed the track link back in place as the track rolled .... While the track German had elaborately made links to have them in place ..... All this meant slower production rates . . The Germans being a"superior race " would not compromise to the need of the hour ..

Many people overly criticize german war production, and overly emphasize the russian "Cheap" one but forgetts that the germans were better with that regard.
So lets take a look. In all the Soviets lost some 83.500 turreted tanks in ww2 which is some 77% or their full stock. And keep in mind tanks such as the t-44 and IS 3 and other prototypes which did not deployed in the war but still produced by hundreds regardles are giving a reasonable percentage to the survivors (Like the t-44 of which they built 350 during the war.)
And let's not forgett human losses as being 8,668,400 soldiers killed and 22,326,905 were wounded.
Now lets compare the german losses for the eastern front.
For the human numbers The germans lost 1,105,987 soldiers being killed and 3,498,059 being injured, That's puts the K/D ration to 1 to 6,7 in favor of the germans in human losses.
The germans lost a total of 25,584 armored vehicles on the eastern front (Keep in mind the soviet number I was given above only counted turreted tanks) Still it gives 1:3 ration in favor of the germans.
During the war the production ration was 1:3 in favor of the Soviets. However Tank exchange ration was 1:4,4 in favor of the germans.
Which puts it simple. the germans managed to destroy more soviet tanks than which they could produce. It really puts the opinion that the germans would defeat the soviet union in an 1v1 fight.
And don't forgett the germans in 1943 were about to produce their tanks at reduced cost and man hours, as they were chosen gas cutting instead of machining on their newer vehicles and made additional steps to make their production more efficent with imporved output. It was the allied bombing campaing and the bottleneck on the supply chain of raw materials as due to bombings trains only travelled at poor visibility conditions and also due to the fact that they could not use lights (Air raids) they were not able to produce in 24/7.
Now imagine what would happen without British, US air interruption!

Unlike the USA, German industry was never geared up for mass production on any level even before the war. For example, the American car manufacturers being automated entering the war shifted gears and modified their assembly lines to produce armaments. For every tank, Germany made the US made 15, etc. When it came to sheer armament by volume compared to the US Germany was doomed.

Only about 8% of the whole German military budget went for armored vehicles during WW2.During the first half of the war German armament industry operated in bare minimum capacity and only produced vehicles to replace losses. Also manufacturing techniques were not suitable for mass production either.Roughly 50% of all 47,000 German tanks and assault guns between 1939-1945 were produced in 1944 and first months of 1945(19,000+ and ~4,000 respectively)
Despite having a considerably larger industry and resources than Soviets between 1941-1944(besides oil and some rare minerals) they produced less than half as many tanks.

Strategically, Germany had little chance to win the war. Without sources of raw petroleum they were struggling to fuel their war machine. Even with the massive coal gassification industry they still needed raw petroleum to make lubricating oils. All they had was the Ploesti oil fields in Rumania which were under almost constant air attack during the war. Had they grabbed the Caucuses oil fields in Russia, they would have used almost as much coal energy transporting it by train back to Germany to refine it as could have been gotten by just gassifying the coal used. WW2 was a desperate gamble by Germany just as by Japan and they both crapped out. You have to have strategic materials to win a modern war, end of story.
