Just remember if your going to sell any graded coins to a brick & mortar dealer, they will only give maybe 50% of the value if you're lucky

I never trusted NGC anyways, some toning may be valuable as long as it's natural toning and has unique colors and patterns, some toning isn't valuable specially if it's dark dirty toning it actually hurts the coin real value.

It seems as though you are trying to steer people away from learning the true value of the coin they have attained. My friend lost a valuable coin to a unscrupulous dealer who bragged to me about how he made a two thousand dollar profit because the customer didn't have the coin graded.

You list me on this one you say new guys stay away from graded coins due to the possibility of it being fake but buying raw coins only strips another layer off the possibility that it is fake I kinda get where your headed but my two cents would be for new collector to buy few raw in a series then go buy slabbed lower graded coin in that series reason being it happened to me a bunch with raw coin you get into dealer saying this coin is not a 63 it’s a 58 so the graded coin makes it easier for collectors to know what they cost and know about what they sell for

For identifying a Fake from Real sending to a Grading place…Fine But not for $$$$’s Graded coins are a Money Pit where Coins need for Identifying And A Grade to determine how good of a coin it is from a perfect specimen down. However, grading coin and card companies are taking us for a ride with their charges. If you send a coin in to be graded and you think that it may be an MS 65 or 66 why should the grading company charge you more once that MS level has been determined? They have graded it already yet if it receives a grade of an MS high grade, why should they be allowed to charge you more? Send in a coin, knowing that it is a low-grade coin…yet once graded it receives an MS grade of 65 over higher. Why should they be allowed to charge you more for the that grading?

Shaun, I love your experience, knowledge and most of all the concern and care you have for your audience by putting presentations such as this one together with priceless information, especially for the novice collectors.
I’ve been collecting for about 6 years now and today I treated myself to a coin i’ve been coveting in MS for quite a while. It is a graded coin (PCGS MS 65), I bought it on eBay and though I most definitely overpaid for it, it is a coin that for some reason, always intrigued me and I just needed to add to my collection. The coin I’m referring to is the 1982 P Roosevelt dime no mint mark strong strike with FB. Like I said, I over payed some but regardless I’m tickled pink that I bought it and can’t wait to get it in the mail.
Purpose of the story is that these kind of purchases should be few and far between, it’s ok to treat yourself and maybe over pay for a coin that you really desire once in a while as long as you stick to the basics and have a game plan 99% of the time.
    Another brilliant video sir. 👏🏼

This is why I consider high grade coins with high mintage numbers to be a mistake. When the vast majority of the value can disappear from something as simple as an unfortunate slab crack or mishandling mistake, much moreso a new grading system or standard...well you're boned.

The holder doesn’t increase the value of a toned coin. What the slab does do is certify that the toning is not artificial. Frankly, I liked the hobby better when there weren’t slabs but that ship has sailed. You absolutely have to grade a coin if it’s ultra high grade and/or high value. You report on these every week which is excellent coverage.

  • @jrpcoins

grading is just the perfect way not to get burned or over pay for anything that seems like it has value when in fact it does but not to the extent of one that is pedigreed to be genuine. imagine buying a 1909-s VDB raw that really was a 1909 VDB with an S soldered into it or like myself, be sold and paid $575 dollars for an ungraded 1882-cc morgan from someone you think you can trust or that has a large youtube following and purchase it because of the way it was displayed only to realize it was cleaned when you get it in hand. Had it been graded i would have been safe, but with the cleaning mark it had id be lucky to get a unc details grade. Most coin shops around me did not even want to pay me 100 dollars for it ??? ungraded GSA slabs go for 300 all day but again its always safer to buy GRADED COINS especially when youre paying anything more than $50 dollars.

Slabs have helped for online sales, but overall I rather hold what I buy before paying. The world has changed and technology is happening for better or worse.

I am still an amateur when it comes to the "Hobby" with only 4 months or so under my belt. However, I do know what to look for when it comes to coins and the value attached to it graded or not. it takes time to see what might be a good-looking coin and a coin that you put in a holder ASAP. Like anything else in life if you want to get better you have to Immerse yourself in it, practice and educate yourself by as many means as possible.

I think a lot, not all, of the coin/currency market is being driven by greed. There's an old Wall Street adage that holds true here; The fastest way to become a millionaire in stocks is to start by being a billionaire. In antiques and collectibles, they tell you to spend frugally and buy what you enjoy owning. That way if you get stuck with something, you still enjoy it and didn't spend a lot of money on it.
