    The important thing about the gun and why it isn't often used is because bullets are rare and precious. You lost those along with your gun and while recovering the gun is a plot point hard to skip, finding the bullets may be much much harder. You could end up with a gun and have no way to use it all. The fact that you have a gun is an unspoken threat. In some cases this threat is also a bluff and that adds a lot.
    Thank you for covering this game. It has been one of my all time favorites.

    Truly one of the best rpgs ever and ive probably played a hundred of them, the showdown scene was so tense and will stick with me forever as one of my favorite gaming moments especially that one red check youre going to agonize over and pray that it suceeds. I hear you about the rng blocking you and agree, the game does have replayability and we often want to tailor our Harry in a certain way and the game says no so if we want a mastermind and we fail a mental check and may have to solve it in a physical way it takes the user out role playing since our version of harry wouldnt do that hed just find another way around using his logic skills

    I've always said El-ee-see-um (because that's what it is) not El-loo-zee-um but whatever maybe it's an American thing they always say stuff wrong like 'AtmospFEARic' instead of you know, pheric. Good review anyway, I'd played through most of this game before just wanted to know what was different in the Final Cut.

    You gonna have a low-spoiler rundown of how to do this one? Or should we all just mess around and enjoy the weirdness?

      Mess around and enjoy the weirdness. Disco is one of those games you just jump into and make your own experience.

      @@SlanderedGaming There is a place where you get locked into a pretty harsh stack of skill checks and can be forced to reload an old save. But I lucked into exploring other stuff in the right order so I had extra drugs to stay alive. I could've had an easier time by picking a hilarious option that looks like it probably bypasses most of the dangers, but I didn't have the right skill block to pull it off. :(

      @@SlanderedGaming it's probably the best roleplaying game I've ever played. It has an incredible understanding of people and consequently some of the best dialogue video games have to offer. One reason I really don't care about the mystery not being a mystery is that I think this is a game about people, and it nails that. Having to console that woman after finding her dead husband, talking with Tommy about missing people, the little story with Rene and Gaston, Cuno and his dad or the kids trying to set up a dance club (and speed side hustle), these are all extremely special moments that catch that "human" element I think we need more of in media generally. This is really what stood out most to me, but I also appreciate the lack of apoliticism and forcing the player to confront political realities, confront poverty, confront the monsters imperialist wars create, confront the alcoholism, drug addiction and 'crime' that comes from a bad life and poverty. A moment that sticks out thinking about these things is, "Pigs", and how you tell Tidus about her and get to see a whole other side of him that isn't confrontational. Or even with "Pigs" herself and how she frankly is a lot like some of the people I met in a mental hospital. Heart breaking stuff

      It sounds like seeded RNG. It's unfathomable that you would flip Tails 40 times in a row. But seeded RNG means that it pre-rolls all your dice and remembers the results for your entire save file, so if you needed to roll a 14 out of 100 but you rolled an 11, then when you reload, it remembers that you have to roll an 11. If SG's report is accurate, this has to be what's going on. I suspect the idea is that they don't want you to reload until you get the best of all worlds in a single playthrough. But it does mean that if you want to succeed a few particular rolls, then you might have to restart from the very beginning if you fail one. Even if they're all 85% success, there's nearly a 50% chance of failing at least one out of those four.

      @@ArdannaL idk when you played or if it's the same patch number, but losing 40 50-50's in a row would be astronomically unlikely, so either it's seeded RNG for his version, or his story in the video is exaggerated. It's unthinkable that this could happen just by random chance.

      It was never a problem in the original Disco Elysium for me so I wonder if something changed with The Final Cut. There was no exaggeration in my video I literally redid the check 50 times and failed. I also checked the dice rolls to make sure it was actually doing a new roll and it was.

    Personal thoughts
    The game is a great character study of Harrier Du Bois, but a terrible murder mystery, being completely on rails and locking you out of pursuing any true leads until the time is right. I'll also note that Harry is not truly "free" in development. Every single thing in the game is an expression Harry's heartbreak and depression, whether it's becoming a radfem or a communist. It's all about the wömen bröther.
    I'm also inclined to argue that the game only has a decent critique for the fascism, as the devs own stalinism keeps them from being insight on Communism, and they've just got nothing but twitter-style jabs for Liberalism and Moralism.
    Also, the "high skills make you do bad stuff" sales pitch of the game is entirely a lie, as it comes up maybe a couple of time in the whole game.
    Kim is extremely top tier though.
    Nitpick. You keep calling the game "Disco Elusium", not "Disco Elysium".

    • @Kammereer
      @Kammereer 2 года назад +3

      Re:Guns
      The developers are really obviously big anti-gun types, to the point of Kim having a speech against modern semi-automatic weapons and about their single-shot matchlock style pistols keeping Revachol safer.
      And I actually agree that Harry (a cop)'s relationship with his weapon isn't sufficiently explored. Him having lost his gun is basically a gag. It's a ripe source of content, the ease and frivolity of the police violence. Yet it's left entirely untapped.

      The criticism of communism is quite strong, if you're a communist. Calling them Stalinist is also wrong. Evrart is himself a critique of Stalinism, I think this criticism is also clearer if you're a communist. In case it isn't clear I don't mean if Harry is a communist, I mean you the player are a communist

    • @Kammereer
      @Kammereer 2 года назад +1

      @@daylearmstrong4447 "Some communists are corrupt" isn't a serious systemic critique of communism. Especially when you then go "but also Evrart is fighting for what's right despite the corruption" and "but we should build communism anyway because the dream is oh so beautiful". Wasn't very beautiful for my family under communism.
      ZA/UM literally have a portrait of Stalin in their office. You see someone with a portrait of Hitler - you call them a nazist.

    • @daylearmstrong4447
      @daylearmstrong4447 2 года назад +1

      @@Kammereer it's more about commandism and social democracy co-opting communism, which is why I said the criticism is stronger from a communist perspective because you won't notice that kind of critique. This isn't a critique of corruption, but of counter revolutionary ideas taking hold of communist sentiments for the purposes of state building. Just like Stalin, who was a counter revolutionary who established a social democratic regime and systematically dismembered the dotp

      @@Kammereer Communism is critiqued more and with better insight than any of the other political leanings put together. I take issue with your other points too but that one was just egregious.
      Kim is indeed to tier though.
