Something a lot of Americans don’t get about our sonic is that this is just how we talk to our mates here in the UK. It’s just banter, we take the piss a lot, especially towards our friends.

I understand many people may have a distaste for this take on Sonic but so many people are quick to write him off as a complete monster based on like, two out of context panels they saw floating around online.
It’s so apparent that hardly anyone in this community has actually taken time to read the comic before dishing out their hot takes on it. great video btw, its good to see someone explain properly this in this format

He is truly a product of his time, I am so glad we got such a unique version of sonic with the fleetway series. With these new manadates, is refreshing seeing sonic feel so human after you see the constant perfect boyscout that sega wants to push nowadays.

Great job, sometimes its good to appreciate a Shakespearean character. Flawed characters are eventually going have to face their flaws, and we wanna see if they improve for the better. Even then, they can still be forced to face the consequences of their actions. Spiderman is also a victim to personality change in the modern time in different media.
Fleetway Sonic is my Sonic. He's got more nuance than most give him credit for. He's damaged and defensive but still strives to do the right thing. He needs alone-time but he also needs his pals. He's young, powerful, brash and he's all the more relatable for it. Archie's emo-strips and beige Jesus is sometimes fun but it lacks real heart in the characters. It's easy being good when that's the only way you're written - I'm looking at you IDW! :P
Seriously though, if you haven't read it and you're a Sonic fan you're missing out.

He may be a asshole to his friends but he still does care for them and has a great heart deep down.
Sonic being a jerk to his friends as a joke is very English, we make fun of each other, and we even call each other the c-word, some of the stuff I have said to my mum would be seen as hateful in the US.
I ones talk about how Sega saying Sonic hates crying and won't cry could be a great character flaw, and I used Fleetway Sonic to show this, as you shown when his upset dose he cry, no he gets angry and takes he anger too far, that fits someone who doesn't like to cry (I think Fleetway Sonic has cried but I also think he hasn't, but I haven't read the comics sines I was a kid)

This was so interesting to watch! I really enjoyed learning about what makes this version of Sonic so unique from others, and it makes me appreciate this interpretation of him even more. I also liked the music choices underneath the commentary, as it was very fitting. Wonderful work as always, Strister! Keep it up!

The really annoying thing about the publisher Fleetway is that they tended to restrict their comic's runs to 7 years regardless of how popular it was. Their best writer, Nigel Kitching, had returned to write the Adventure 1 ark & it shows, but when that ended, that was it. He was writing the next story for the ark not even realising the comic had been cancelled.
Happily the comic's legacy is still with us. STC Online was launched the same time the comic ended & is still going today with new stories written & drawn by fans all in the STC spirit, with still the occasional contribution of some original comic staff. It's so faithful to the original it's been famously labelled "unofficially official". As of now they've written 74 comics. Not a lot in 21 years maybe, but it's certainly better than nothing.

I wouldnt say he's the best sonic but I do agree his personality works, people just call him a jerk despite the fact right after he said mean things to charmy he goes to save him in the same panel, or when he trades the chaos emeralds to robotnik just to save tails who everyone says he's being mean tho And when tails is killed in an eggman simulation Sonic gets really sad too. Thats Sonic just being insecure about how to express what he really means and likes to makes jokes

Fleetway Sonic character kinda reminds me of Thomas. Not surprised cause the comics made by the British
Good video. I haven't read the Fleetway comics myself (first, I want to finish Archie, at least). And I have to recognize I was wrong about this version of Sonic. But I've read the STC Online #261, that is the unique fan comic that is official (SEGA wanted to promote Lost World) and some of the original writers worked on that issue. The difference between "Classic Fleetway Sonic" and "Modern Fleetway Sonic" is abysmal. In the comic, the M.F. Sonic gets angry at C.F. Sonic for laughing at the Jhonny's statue. Thanks to your video, I can see the big picture now.

This is the main difference between Fleetway and Meta Sonics. Meta never has to face consequences, because he's supposedly "perfect" (Maybe in lost world, but I don't count that because it's very clumsily written and it never gets any payoff anyway) and that frankly infuriates me. By sharp contrast, when Fleetway does something wrong others call him out on it.

Fleetway's Sonic the comic is the best version of Sonic's character. He's 3dimensional and flawed. A lot of people want him to basically be Mickey Mouse and to me that's just boring

Cool vid but I still say fleetway Sonic’s Personality is the worst right next to Movie Sonic. At least Fleetway Sonic is better than current Game Sonic (2010 - Present). My favorite characterizations of Sonic in order goes like this:
1. Game Sonic (1998 - 2009)
2. IDW Sonic
3. Archie Sonic
Idk why, but fleetway Sonic’s quill design was my favorite part of the character tbh.

Good video... for the most part. I appreciate comparing Fleetway Sonic to other Sonics and showing why he's different or good, but I don't like that at the expense of main Sonic. Those mandates everyone cries about aren't wrong or bad, they enforce the status quo of the series. Game Sonic doesn't lose permanently and he isn't meant to be relatable, he's meant to be inspirational and looked up to. Fleetway isn't wrong for having its take, but Game Sonic isn't bad for doing it their way either. His power of friendship isn't something that deserves disparaging.

I can adjust to his jerkiness, but it's just that for most of it he barely got called on it. The most he'd get was "give it a rest, Sonic" from Johny Lightfoot.
Also, nobody's saying he has to be some cookie-cutter boyscout [which Archie and the cartoon Sonics were NOT], but to people outside the UK it would feel weird that he'd act so sarcastic and snarky towards the people who were supposed to be his FRIENDS.
It was all back in the old days I guess, maybe the British Sonic writers have probably improved by now
I mean great vid and I don’t mind a character having flaws but I REALLY don’t like the flaws of Fleetway sonic. There are ways to make Sonic flawed and not be a dick to his friends/chars we like. Just because your a hero and save people doesn’t give you the right to be an a**hole. Maybe if they actually showed and vocalized his insecurity in expressing himself more and showed his friends biting back or calling him out WAY more than just a few times. The “jjerk w/a heart of gold” archetype is very outdated and normalizes verbally abusing your friends and loved ones as long as you perform xyz action (like saving their life physically or saving them financially or etc) I like IDW and then Archie sonic

The problem I have with Fleetway Sonic isn’t the fact that he’s somewhat of a jerk. It’s the fact that they barely expand upon this part of his character or allow him to develop until the near end of the comic. You can’t just say he has a hard time expressing himself and then only have one story that explores this. And so what if the other characters call him out on his actions, it barely goes anywhere and he barely changes. There’s also his dynamic with Tails. I get that Sonic is only joking, but Tails barely knows that fact and his self confidence is already low. Thankfully, Sonic the comic online fixes most of these issues.
