Hey was wondering if you think the konsul or the batboy is a better de razor overall… I have sensitive skin and am looking for new premium razor but not looking good to acquire a collection!
@@GregTardif sorry the fatboy! Spellcheck lol.. not interested in changing out plates I don’t think… kind of set on a fatboy or konsul although have heard great things about the 6s.
Hi Greg, I use Matt's method to load the blade with one additional step. Try rinsing the bottom plate with warm water, shake off, and then place the blade on the bottom plate the moisture helps to hold the blade in place whale you insert and tighten the top cap.
I’m one of those crazies that goes for a bbs three passer almost all the time. My mileage with my Konsul is that after 2 passes I’m almost (like 89-92%) as smooth as after 3 passes with other razors. But where it counts for me the most is when I go in for the final clean up pass to get the last little bits. I crank it up to 4.5 or 5 and it’s like a light saber and really minimizes buffing, which is where I typically get my irritation. Sexy little thing too.
I appreciate how you explained this. I can’t wait five days to shave so, while I might think it’s beautiful, I don’t think I would get much use from it. And for that price, it’s just not worth it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
This is awesome. Thank you for the review. I will have to agree with your assessment of the Konsul with the exception of the “daily driver” observation. I think it is fair to say that “daily driving” the Konsul is based on individual preference, speed of hair growth, and hair coarseness. On long hauls like 3-5 days I can adjust it to 5 or 6, but on daily use I have to keep it below 3.5-that is the beauty of this razor. Thank you again. Oh and BTW-I do daily triples-😕 crazy! LOVE, LOVE this razor!
Awesome review Greg! Have a great weekend! Material is not so expensive in this whole thing. Stainless steel for example cost about 1400 $ the metric tons or 2204,6 pound. For work to make one of this Razor ( I am a trained and qualified industrial mechanic or earlier called a locksmith) a skilled worker on conventional machines needs about 2-3 hours and less. On CNC one per piece. So now it just depends on what the hourly wage is. So I think very nice, looks noble! But not necessary. Yes and ok better shave if you don't shave every day. Yes, that too.
Hope you feel better soon! Couldn’t agree more, I do love my Konsul💪🏼. Your a part of why I purchased it (ON BLACK FRIDAY, EVEN BETTER, cha-ching🤣) but yes Matt’s vid on blade changing helped me too. You may be #1🤔 on shave creator vids IMO💪🏼 Great Great job🙏🏼 it’s your Humor, your style, your editing, the whole package. And wow all of that in less than 30mins (others please take note🤣)
I appreciate your review, Greg! But I just don't think the expense of the Rex Konsul is worth it for me. I am very happy with my one and only DE safety razor, the Parker Variant. It's a great adjustable, at a fraction of the Konsul's price. I spent the last month + shaving just once per week, using a Treet Carbon Steel blade. Each time I shaved, I upped the dial a little (the first shave was on 3 for the first pass, and 2 for the second; then 4/3 for the second shave; 4.5/3.5 for the third, etc.), until I finally maxed it out on the fifth shave (still the same Treet blade) at 5+/4. Every single shave was very smooth, and both the razor and blade handled seven days of growth like a champ (granted, I am a bit patchy on my cheeks, but my hair is also pretty coarse. And yes, sometimes I need a third pass on my neck). In the 10 months that I've had the Variant, I have not tried shaving with it every single day, because I really don't need to. But with a mild blade I think the Variant would be fine for everyday usage too. And you really can't beat it for the price! If I do eventually get another razor, I would likely go for a slant razor, like the Parker Semi-Slant, or perhaps something classic like the Merkur 34C or Edwin Jagger DE89. But for now, I can't help feeling that the Variant is all I really need.
Agree, my ATT slant is made for multi day growth. Efficiently shaves like it was one day growth. But I enjoy shaving daily to every 2 days too much for it to be anything but an occasional use.
Hard to believe you like anything more than the Ambassador! The Konsul sounds amazing though. I guess I will have to check it out now. I have been waiting and recovering from the cost of the Ambassador and some other razors. The Ambassador is still my favorite at this time.
Great one as always buddy! I love slants, short handles and adjustables... hence I guess I would love this one! Committing to the money (which I completely see the worth of it) is the hardest part.
Sometimes, in this hobby, you need to know when you've found your "Eleanor". That is the razor which makes you feel bad when you finish shaving and there's no more beard to shave!
The Konsul is one of my fav razor - smooth on every setting, efficient enough on the small numbers, super efficient on the higher numbers - the only thing I dont like are some sharp edges.
Greg. Call me krazy but I like the Konsul for consecutive shaves so far. I used it on 3 shaves in a row and it produced no irritation. This is rare as I am an every other day shaver. I shaved with it on settings 5 - 2 playing around. It is smooth but there is some bladefeel. A tad more than say the Overlander. Overlander is about a 3 on the Konsul to me for efficiency. To save cash Rex has scratch and dent sometimes and it’s half off. That’s what I did. I will say that the Konsul could be a bit better balanced as it’s a little head heavy with the Reg handle due to chunkier head and unavoidable adjustment mechanism. I think Matt needs to do a bottom dial. Take care buddy. /mouthful of ….. lol
Nice review. What's your idea about Yaqi adjustable The Final Cut (the chrome-plated variant, the full brass variant, and the recent stainless steel model which is called Ultima)? I think a comparison video between Rex Konsul, Rockwell T2, and the Yaqi will be really interesting.
Looks like a great razor. I’m a daily two pass guy. This may not be for me. I only own two razors. Edwin Jagger and Executive Shaving Outlaw. Both are great. I have resisted the urge to buy more since I tend to go overboard on soap buying.
I'd love to try the Konsul. I'm dying to see what a more refined Ambassador feels like, since I already know what the less refined Konsul is like. They're not cheap, but with the number of precise parts made in the US, the price is far more understandable than equivalent priced 3 piece razors. Matt's got good hair, too. I'm jealous. What is your favorite daily driver at the moment? Which of your other razors do you think would be good or bad for daily use?
@@GregTardif The Futur checks off so many boxes for you. It's got a round bottom, zero grip, and it gives you razor burn if you just look at it. But let's look at the positives. It's great for peeling vegetables. The gap and lather/epidermis channels are nice and big. With a gap like that, it's easy to rinse the blood off. Look up "The Cruel Shoes" by Steve Martin (~2 mins, it's on RUclips) and tell me if it doesn't apply to wet shavers and the Futur.
Stupid question here: Is the Rex Konsul really a better shave than a Gilette Mach 3? I'm intrigued with the Konsul but with the Mach 3 I don't have to think about shaving. It does the job.
Greg, I know that the Konsul is top of the Slant heap, but I was curious if you ever heard of or tried the Ikon X3 slant razor. I guess it is more of an mid level entry to the slant experience. Just curious what your opinion is.

Greg, you need to try the Aluminum Karve Overlander. It does both daily shaves & efficient multi days of growth EXTREMELY well. Much better choice for sensitive skin than the Konsul. I’ve had both & ended up selling the Konsul, it’s THAT much better, and just a fraction of the price of the Konsul too. At 88.00 USD it’s no wonder why it’s often sold out. Cheers!
@@GregTardif It’s definitely a light razor in aluminum, but the top cap smoothness is apparently a bit better than the brass & SS versions…. The brass version is nice & heavy and still very affordable at around 93.00 USD, depending on exchange rate from the 125.00 CAD price…. That might be better for you if you don’t mind patina….
