The first movie I ever went to see and one of my earliest memories. It was a drive in. My parents actually thought my sister and I would sleep in the backseat while they watched the movie in peace. I was four and my sister was three. We didn't sleep. I remember I really enjoyed it, especially, "Push the button, Max!" Oh, and the pie fight!
Curtis, Lemmon, and Wood, all at their absolute peak. Wonderful actors, great comedy and a theme that tugs at your heart from the very first note. This was the Golden Age.
This Mancini score deserves a release with all the original cues from the motion picture. We have Mancini's re-recordings but the originals are yet to be released.

Fun fact:Looney Tunes soundman,Treg Brown worked on this film,why is why most of his iconic Looney Tunes sound effects(such as the famous Taz spin and the machine splutter effect)show up occasionally in the movie and he even won a Oscar for it the following year. Also, the film helped inspire Hanna-Barbera’s Wacky Races and DePatie-Freleng took a bit of inspiration from the film in one of their followup creations to The Pink Panther(they previously animated the titles to Blake Edward’s film of the same name that debuted the pink feline the previous year),Roland and Rattfink,inspired by Jack Lemmon’s Proffesor Fate and Tony Curtis’ The Great Leslie from the movie.
The Great Race airs Wed morning (12:35am CT, Oct. 12, 2022) on Turner Classic Movies (TCM). Prior to it at 7pm (CT), "Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines" (1965), then at 9:30pm (CT) is the funniest film I've ever seen: "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" (1963). Followed by The Great Race at 12:30am. At 3:30am (CT) is "The Fortune Cookie" (1966) starring Jack Lemmon and his great friend Walter Matthau.
My dad was born in 42' and so, I was privalidged to grow up watching old Hollywood Classics like these. Probably my favorite is My Fair Lady but watching this lovely movie made me wonder if that might be change. :)

Just watched a documentary on Warner Studio Artist and Disney animator Tyrus Wong and this was one of the movies he did production art for and it occurred to me that these opening titles just scream his art style, I wonder if he did indeed do these.
I, too, would love to see a remake. But I seriously don't think it would work. Part of the problem has to do with comic timing: VERY few know how to use it today as effectively as Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy, Buster Keaton, Chaplin (and many others) did. And this includes producers, directors, writers, etc. Just look at the beginning of the pie fight and notice, before the mayhem starts, that the pie strikes corresponded to the music. Also, the comic tension with "You ... wouldn't ... DARE!!!
I want all movies to start out like this with this song being used from now on. Even if it's something from DC Comics or Paramount or hell even an Asylum film. Just make this a mandatory thing from now on. Plus its giving me major Monty Python or a Mel Brooks movie type of feel
Tom Hiddleston wants to play the role of a moustachio comic baddy like Prof. F. And his laughter would be superb as the Crown Prince. Let there be a remake!
I love, how the audience is booing at Professor Fate, when he actually is the most enjoyable character in this movie. I found the great Leslie just to be bland in comparison. Ahhh, this brings back memories.
huipuipui I felt Leslie’s problem was the writing. They made his character so machine-like perfect and I felt Tony Curtis did as much as he could do with the character. He really demonstrated a strong charismatic presence which is necessary for lead characters. I agree though that Professor Fate was a lot of fun all around and the most interesting character and another reason why Jack Lemmon was such a legend.
Something I always wanted to know and no pianist has been able to answer... who is playing those rapid piano 16th note runs and what is that technique called?! I know it's early Joplin Ragtime style, but even Joplin didn't use those rapid 16th note flourishes. It's amazing!
I don't know who is playing the piano for the introduction, but that flickering octave jump is called an "octave tremolo". There are a few videos on RUclips that demonstrate the technique.

Sorry I truly don't get why this film is so revered, I know its a parody of old films I see a lot of comedy in it but it just gets old quick you get tired of the 3 leads before the race even begins, which is way to far in, then you have a chance to get some variation of comedy with the other racers but they get rid of them in a minute. then they don't show any real parts of the race its just jumps to new set pieces, the race part of the title is useless . It just gets so tired and old quick, there is a reason films that this one is parodying is either shown in 5 minute cereals or 30 minutes tops
airplane any monty python movie, caddy shack, the jerk, hot shots, super troopers, any ,leslie nelson, 50% of national lampoon movies pre 2005 adam sandler movies, jim carrey movies, most Mel Brooks movies just to name a few movies made since then that are good slap stick movies
+w7100 I wouldn't necessarily call them slapstick, sure they have some but not as much as stuff like the original pink panther movies and other such masterpieces.
It's not the best comedy of all times, but I certainly wouldn't say it is atrociously bad. My opinion is that it has some pacing issues, but is still very entertaining.

It pleases me to no end that Stan Laurel was alive in 1962 and undoubtedly saw this film dedicated to he and Babe.

It was titled "The Sweetheart Tree"....however, the Oscar for "Best Song of 1965" went to "The Shadow of Your Smile" [from "The Sandpiper"].

I guess IMO it was just a tad too long. Still: it's great an I loved the soundtrack.

A good movie, but basically it is an over long Road Runner/ Wiley Coyote cartoon. Fitting that it was released by Warner Brothers.

I lasted through about nine minutes of this atrociously bad movie before I bailed - and that includes the opening credits. Truly awful.
