  • Welcome to my NEW series Doctor vs. Google! I know we all love to run to google search whenever we have a medical question and sometimes that type of searching is great but it can easily get sidetracked based on the autocomplete or just getting weird search results.
I decided to transform the classic Autocomplete video format on its side and just react to my google searches as we cover a specific topic each week. This week that topic issssss... "Doctors", Yay =]
I hope you enjoy this new format and if you do please be sure to like and comment to let me know.

My grandpa had cancer and thought he was healing well so he was happy and energetic and then my grandma got the news that the cancer basically spread into the whole body and he most likely would have only 2 more weeks for living. So my grandma literally told the doctor: "Don't tell him that or he'll jump from the balcony and if that happens I'll have to take the responsibility for that!" My grandpa was a very proud and strong person, so I could totally see that happening for him. I'm glad they didn't tell him, he was happy and hoping till the end.

I was briefly a secretary in a doctors office. The doctor not only had Dr. handwriting, but he had arthritis in his thumbs. His handwriting was unspeakable. I tried to do ICD9 coding for him. I was trying to figure out on a patient’s notes where it said “patient is still crying.” I finally gave up and asked the more experienced office worker what the rest of it said. It actually said “patient is still congested.”

  • @loftyradish6972
    @loftyradish6972 2 года назад +19

As a phlebotomist, the amount of time I waste with illegible Dr's handwriting is absolutely mind blowing, it can turn a ten minute procedure into a 20 minute phone call as we all try to work out what on earth the Dr was requesting. The other one is when Dr's just make up their own acronyms for things. I once had a Dr write "RPM" on the form. I called the lab and they were like "revs per minute?" Anyway, lab ended up having to contact the dr, it was just a standard kidney test. Some of the funniest handwriting one was when my boss said in all seriousness to look at it upside down because sometimes then you could work it out. We did work that one out, it was blood group.
Something else we do is ask the patient, like if I think I know what something is I will say "does it make sense for your Dr to be testing you for this?" This once backfired very, very badly (but also hilariously) when I asked a patient "does it make sense for your Dr to be testing you for coeliac disease?" And the patients earnestly talked about how the local health department was poisoning his water to make him fart a lot and make him smell bad and discredit him so that the judge wouldn't believe him when he went to court to accuse his psychiatrists of following him. The poor man was obviously experiencing psychosis. However, since he appeared to be having symptoms of farting, I ascertained that he was probably being tested for coeliacs disease and went ahead with the blood test while he continued to talk about the health department. Sweet guy, but good lord that was one day where keeping a straight face was difficult.

Not only did it save me a ton of money but also major stress of needing to think about GoodRx (if it even came to mind), finding what I needed in a dosage, ect. As a social worker working in nursing homes, I had a discussion with family about DNRs too. Tried to help them understand that was what desired, and it was there signed and everything....I was usually the one who made the bracelets that said it too....and you get it of course, when the time comes to sign the papers, the family is trying to convince them not to sign papers. But, it's a personal choice of the person, as long as they are of sound mind and body when they make that choice. It sucks for the family most of the time. And you feel for them. But it is what the patient/ resident wanted.

  • @laurenjade5709

I'm a bit late on watching Dr. Mike but I'm really loving this channel. Watching his stuff makes me realize how similar animal medicine is to human medicine. I'm a veterinary technician (have been for many years) who is currently going through veterinary school and oh boy... Some of the things I've heard about my profession and some of the things I have googled are astounding. I can also relate so much to doctors running late. Please be patient... Luckily, I work in a small enough clinic we can reschedule things if needed (most people are very understanding) but I promise medical professionals (human and animal) are not deliberately running late to waste your time. Many unforeseen events happen in medicine and sometimes we have to prioritize once patient over another. It doesn't mean we don't care and doesn't mean we are trying to waste your time. Anyway, there are other aspects that are similar but I'll stop with the crazy rant. Thanks Dr. Mike! Go do good medicine and show the world what medicine is really and should always be about!

@PaulR I suspect that it is the case for lot of them (i am French, and that is relatable). Problem is likely that a governmental system is in competition with lot of other important things for limited budget, so it is easy to cut just a little the budget each year (or not increase for inflation), and finally the healthcare system becomes more and more in tension...

The insane amount of paperwork and administrative work putting a strain on people in the healthcare profession is really personal to me, because my dad was a physical therapist for most of his life and this affected both his work-life balance and his ability to do his job. He had early onset Parkinson’s, and while he was still able to work for a while because the mobility issues hadn’t gotten too bad, he was still having problems with writing his notes quickly and legibly. So, before he was even to a point where he should’ve quit and gone on disability, he was basically forced out because he couldn’t keep up with the paperwork.

Most of them just took my temperature and said I was fine and had me out the door within 5 minutes. I definitely don't agree with what your doctor did, because I had a gastroenterologist (stomach doctor) tell me that my problem of three years would be fixed if I didn't take so many supplements (FYI I had only taken them for 2 months when I had went to see him) and his dismissive behavior had me looking for another GI doctor IMMEDIATELY. So I agree, some doctors need to be more clear with their thought process, or otherwise I am going to think they don't care. Or that they're discriminating because of my cruddy insurance or my age or whatever.

You mention about the tremendous amount of administrative work required of being a doctor. I am a teacher and I can also state about this issue. I went into my field to help kids, but I feel like all I do is test them and analyze data. It was nice to know other professions struggle with this as well.

Doctor mike I really love what you are doing here on RUclips. I had spent a year incredibly depressed and unhealthy. I went to see my doctor multiple times and she put me on 17 different medications at 15 years old. Well I went to the emergency room because i had been passing out. They referred me to a cardiologist because I kept passing out. All the color drained from my face, lips turned blue, and started sweating I would wake up in a panic. The cardiologist is the only doctor who I found who actually helped me. She helped me fix my diet. And didn't give me a single pill. I ended up having neurocardiogenic vasovagle syncope. She gave me a list of foods to limit, fix my water intake, stress mechanisms, and no caffeine. I thank that cardiologist everyday. The only thing I think I would change about the medical field is nit jumping straight to medication. I love how you look at your field. And how u practice yourself. Keep up the good work doctor because you are saving lives with each day and I'm sure each video.

so I'm finnish and what we seem to do here is that when i needed to go to the emergency room is that I, as a patient, fill the checkbox questions when I'm waiting. (I had fallen off a bike and needed my teeth filled in temporarily so I wasn't in a rush) so that can be done with the forms they have hanging about in the waiting rooms or beforehand, at home with the online forms you fill when you're going to an appointment. they ask things like those smoking/drinking/drugs but also eating, teeth care, meds, diagnoses, family history, and also obv the basic personal information.
and so I fall of my bike, call the hospital and ask what to do, they tell me to go to emergency dental care first bc it closes earlier, I arrive, I tell I arrived and am told to fill a form, I fill it and sit to wait. then I go on with the form, they check the bits they care abt and fix my teeth. also ask abt it, like with my meds.
do my question is: is this common and where?

I love working with doctors and they seem to enjoy having me around. I just started a new job and all the doctors that I have met have been welcoming and grateful that I am working at the office!

people only say overpaid argument because of the large healthcare costs in america. but, doctor salaries don't make up the majority of that lol. I think it's around 15 percent, with half of that being actual salary, the other half malpractice insurance etc.
Doctors are definetly not overpaid, they're paid like they should be.

Climbing onto the table (I’m short) for basic checkup things, my doctor is typing on the computer, and there’s this awful crackle-crunch noise. The students look horrified. My doctor turns, “Was that your hip or your knee?” “It was both.” The students wanted to figure out what was happening… my joints have been imitating bubble wrap since 2006!
