      @@joeybaseball7352 Insurance companies don't cover collectables like that. You need specialized insurance that pays out a flat dollar amount that you decide (for example: "I think my collection is worth 10K so I'm buying 10K of this insurance") Your premium is based on the dollar amount you insured, and it's a separate premium from any other insurance.

      @@joeybaseball7352Ive been a collector for 30+ years. There’s nothing close to six figures worth of diecast there. The dudes trying to work some sort of angle to get compensated many times what his stuff is worth. Probably hoping bleeding hearts will throw some money a crowdfunding page. I’ve seen this happen before. Aside from those old redline hot wheels, the rest of what he had weren’t even worth what they sold for new. Even his redlines are commons.

      @@DucknCoverin I saw right through his excuse of it being for his kids college fund. I don't believe for one second that he ever actually planned to sell his collection. He has just been using that excuse as a way to justify buying a bunch of toys. There are much better ways to save for your kid's college funds. Index funds, bonds, conservative mutual funds. Or just really get them to apply themself to something, it can be anything, sports, music, academics, etc, so they can get a full scholarship. And there are clearly a bunch of things he should be spending his money on. Like flood insurance. Even if I lived in Death Valley, I would still have flood insurance.

    Sad but with a caveat. Every collector I know who watched this says this amount and "loss" is a joke. As a collector since 1964, I will say he can open the packages and the metal and plastics will still be saleable. Some less money but the metal is not melting or rusting. The packaging being wet only decreases the value by a small percentage - otherwise ebay would be out of business. My collection survived a hurricane flood because I put everything high on shelves, some in huge bins, and had a backup insurance policy just for the collection.

    • @CSmith-gb1sl
      @CSmith-gb1sl 3 месяца назад +14

      I agree, though this new breed of collectors wants everything in mint packaging. The amounts they state are unrealistic, they are only worth what someone is willing to pay at a given moment. Much of this diecast post 1990 is so mass produced it depreciates. The exceptions are this gentleman's original redlines which can be carefully cleaned & should retain most of it's value.
      I have lost nice furniture, records, books in a flood, so I can empathize with him, you have to live through something like this to appreciate it.

      Hotwheels are not that rare. There is a book of valuations for hotwheels. Even the red wheel ones from the 1960s are not very valuable. Generally under $50. The way to make money on Hotwheels is to collect very rare ones. This is when there was a design that was produced for a short time.

      I had a lot of HW's and MB as a kid in the 70's. I got back into diecast in 2009, so I could customize them. I'd buy a $1 maniline and a $5 real rider to strip the wheels off of. I wouldn't touch some of the $20+ Mattel club versions, and I realized I was looking at them as an "investment." So then I started opening the blown deliveries and drag busses and cutting those up. They became fun again! lol.

    If you have a collection worth six figures you should be ready for any event. From Burglaries to fire to weather. Its not even a hindsight 20/20 type of thing, just a mindset of protecting high value items. Might as well leave all your life savings in cash out around the house. Invest protecting your investments.
    Funny thing is that the guy was going to use this collection to pay for his kids college. With the way colleges are going and attitudes towarda them changing, it would have been money lost anyway.

    I’m a huge toy collector/game and my family has always warned me about floods and fire I’ve seen so many other collectors on RUclips who got their whole collection messed. Up due to a flood or fire so it makes you think now is the addiction worth it or should I find a better home before I start collecting . I keep my most prized posses inside a water/fire proof safe . Even though to others it doesn’t mean nothing to me it will always mean something so it’s worth it for me to put it in a safe to once in a while come look at it . Atleast my hobby’s are doing stuff like that and not shooting up drugs or getting stds from prostitutes .

I know that some insurance companies won't sell you specialized policies like that if you don't live in a risk area, such as not being in a flood plain area, you may not be able to buy it then they royally stick it to you when a flood happens... Oh cry me a river. Ever heard of bonds? If you really cared about your son's "college fund," you don't buy hot wheels with it. He's just trying to trying to justify how ridiculous it is spending six-figures buying toy cars. If he had the money to buy six-figures worth of toys, he can also afford to lose that money. Because lets face, he was never gonna sell it. He was going to die with it, then his kids were gonna donote it to goodwill, or throw it in the trash. I see collections like this all the time end up at goodwill. And every time I see it, I know another collector has died. I usually do scoop them up, and sell them for double what I paid, just to make quick buck. So if I spent $100, I sell it for $250, and I can be bargained down to $200, if I get paid cash.

If you like buying and collecting stuff you dont have to have some ulterior reason or plan, just admit you like the process and hobby of it.

    When I initially saw "six-figure Hot Wheels collection" I thought he had over 100,000 cars. I guess there wasn't enough time to move his Hot Wheels to higher ground. When in Seattle I've gone to The Miniature Car Dealer in Pike Place Market several times. I'm wondering why I'm looking at this stuff. I guess I'll never grow up. It's too late now, but one needs to diversify their investments. Relying on Hot Wheels for his kids college education fund isn't diversifying. Anyway, his collection didn't going from being worth a lot to zero. There's some value that is lost but most value is still there for collectors looking for something rare that they want.

    I have many packaged die cast cars in my collection. I don't collect for value or to later sell them to the highest bidder. I collect them because I like collecting and for me it's just a hobby. I know that at any one moment in life, I could lose them all. I don't cling to these things, I just get enjoyment from them while I am alive. The real value is not the cars, but rather your life and the lives of your loved ones.
    You can buy your dream home and a wildfire can destroy it the next day, or your favorite car or truck and it could be wrecked within a week of purchase. The bottom line, if you still have your life and the lives of your loved ones, those are the most valuable things in your life while you're here on earth.
