Both sound natural, both high quality. Jan Ray acts as a reasonably transparent overdrive, while the Benson adds a bit of body to the tone (possibly lower mids?). Unfortunately with an increase in drive, the Benson began to sound a bit tubby with a loss of string definition. Might be a good addition to an overly bright amp/guitar. A Supro amp that is not dimed has a similar effect and uses. Jan Ray takes the win for my ears in most situations. Great video shnobel.
I do understand. To use live. Just have a good clean amp and put in front a nice od pedal and after the time based pedal. Instead of goin to the loops and all that nonsense. Its live guitar 101
Not masking, adding, The original amp tone is always remains an option, a pedal "adds" additional gain and tone options, you still have the amp you love and then some, very simple to understand..
A good drummer within a good band , trebleboosting an ac30 adding persons to your solosex. This is about mixing and matching different colours ingredients sounds flavours. It is about connection. It is all like adding sugar to a lemon: Pure magic.
Jan Ray all the day! Nice comparison!

Well said, was thinking of getting the benson but my amp is already kind of naturally darker tweed style amp.
I've listened to the video dozens of times, Jan Ray to me seems more natural, creamier and generally better than Benson.
Benson preamp sounds better here! also much less $$
Benson sounds great. Still don’t understand buying the amp you love and masking it’s pure tone with a pedal. But to each their own.
The benson doesn't hide anything, it helps push your amp and tone.

Some amps are too loud and need a couple pedals to sound a certain way
