“Can you imagine you’re shopping at Walmart and the lights go out …..and you hear some wet footsteps and growling.”
You can easily have that experience just by going into Walmart at any time of day and closing your eyes.

The definition of a liminal space is a place of passage (transitory either in time or in action) The in-between of destinations. The reason it's nostalgic is because a lot of transitory spaces are common in a highly commercial society's. airports, malls, outlets, driveways and roads. back in the preindustrial era there was very rarely a liminal space because you can't call the world itself an in-between space it's just being outside but when you add a road that leads to an outlet which contains stores inside a store it becomes very liminal also it's nostalgic because transitory spaces are one of the most relatable spaces in an human experience. we all transition from one place to another it's also known in philosophy as the "non-place" a place with no immediate purpose and what defines a space as a non place is anything that isn't recreational or a destination. so you could say an empty home is liminal but that's because it's empty thus removing the recreation of the living space and hinting at a transitory period in time of someone moving and leaving. Another term one could use in some philosophy is the idea of a space being "homely" which also adds to or detracts to the liminality of a specific space.
Liminal spaces aren't inherently nostalgic it's just that it became a niche cultural development in America first which is super commercial thus the liminal spaces have a lot of personality and can be associated with time periods directly such as the 80s 90s and up because the art deco of a liminal space can be determined it adds another layer of the nostalgia, being able to associate directly with the space itself at a specific time you might look back on fondly.

Not military, but I had an internship with a company that made private jets. Something about big, mostly empty hangars with these nice jets in them and no one else in or around them was just spooky enough that I feel comfortable calling it liminal space for sure

The apartment at 2:40 looks like it might have been a seniors building. My grandparents lived in a building like that. It has places/lounge areas for them to walk to and be able to sit down and talk to other senior in the building. They actually used them a lot. Yeah younger people like ourselves are not going to use that space. But as you get older and it is harder to leave your house and you have less friends, it's actually a really nice thing.

11:35 I think part of the reason the roundabout looks so liminal is the unusually soft lighting and color tone. It sort of looks like it's a miniature and lit with another lamp overhead outside the frame. Also the world just ending in blackness like others have said.

I wish i had a camera and documented my childhood throughout the 90's and teens in the early 2000's. It was such a wonderful unique point in time but it was not easy to capture moments during that time. Even in the early 2000's they were switching to digital but it was awful. It seemed like only richer people were able to have a camera. We definitely have a ton of photos taken with those disposable film cameras but they are mostly my parents taking family photos. Nothing documenting the unique nostalgia places in my memories. I so badly wish i could have photos of those places

I wouldn't be surprised if the Artist Hundertwasser was involved in that McDonalds...
We have a train station that basically looks like that, which he designed.
His philosophy is great - with the idea of creating more dynamic and "wild" buildings and infrastructure, trying to make everything seem more grown and natural, like you're walking through caves or a forest rather than a facility.
But this train station man, I tell ya, it's so terrible. Everything is too narrow, the floor is so fucking wonky, you can't even properly pull a suitcase over it and once you're wearing high heels or plateau boots or stuff like that, it's just a nightmare...

All those of us who have to live with family greatly appreciate having these nice spaces that give us the option to hang out away from the annoyance - ya get me?? A home can get small and cramp when there are three or more of you or when the one other person becomes a overdemanding queen. PLUS when you are an introvert like me - extra space away from others like this is a huge Godsend.

There was a liminal space in my high school.
It was the chemistry hallway. It was at the very back of the school and required you to take a strange path to get there. It was weird because it looked like it was added onto the school waaaaay after it was first built. The architecture looked random, and for the first 2 or 3 weeks of school, nobody would go there.
It was always completely silent, except for an old broken alarm in a room off to the side that was constantly beeping. It made going in there feel illeagle, even though it was perfectly fine to enter.
Of course, more people would find out. And that did include the scary amount of hallway couples that were in my school, but they typically had zero situational awareness so you could just walk right by.

I feel like living in US makes it a lot easier to create liminal content.
In Japan, Europe it is pretty difficult in comparison. I guess, there are some empty places like schools in Japan and so on.
And here in Europe mostly places that elder visit.
However I am mshocked how alive our malls are compared to the US or other places that are empty in US like kid playgrounds. Kinda makes me proud not to live in the US, but a place where people still enjoy outside time and the moments with others.

Actually the austrian McDonalds highway thing is a special building designed by artist friedensreich Hundertwasser, I stop there sometimes on the drive out from vienna. I think it's more cool than liminal, the guy just was agressively against flat floors and straight lines, so everything is kinda curved, full of mosaics and plants. Love his architecture. There are a bunch more buildings like this, a church, a house in vienna and a spa!

The mall roasting is hilarious, that's how I feel too 😂 there's like a couple places at the mall I like and I go there, shop and leave. My friend is always bumming about malls closing and not being as popular anymore and I always laugh and tell her that it was literally just a fad because there was nothing to do in high school except go to the mall, or do things your parents wouldn't like. It's silly because the only oart of her that needs malls to stay open, is her childhood nostalgia. If something is failing financially, it can't just stay open for people's 80's/90s mall rat nostalgia. We're adults now who don't have time to hang at the mall and never will again, and kids these days have a thousand hobbies to do besides mall or movies or a picnic at the park or some mundane BS. Plus you have to have money or you're just at the mall watching other people eat and shop, so it's too expensive of a passtime now. People just want to get their shopping done, preferably online, so they can go do actual fun things.

I find the eeriest spaces can be corporate, particularly empty (modern) conference centres. They're peculiarly soulless to start with.
I really you should look at British prehistory for liminality, although with a slightly different meaning. It seems to have been very important for our ancient peoples. They believed that the spirit world was nearest at boundaries. (I think 'limen' is the Latin for 'boundary')
Our ancient megalithic monuments ( often dating back as far as 3000 BC) are often on ancient boundaries. (Our boundaries, such as the boundaries of our countryside parishes, often date back a very long time indeed.)
A good example is a stone circle called the Rollright Stones in the Cotswold Hills. Not only are they on a parish boundary, but it's still on a county boundary, between Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire.
In Britain, Ireland, and Denmark, we have discovered the "bog men", mummified bodies found in peat bogs. They often seem to have been executed in prehistoric times; in Ireland often near ancient boundaries. But it is also thought that they were deliberately put in neither solid ground nor water, but in a swamp, neither one nor the other.
'Seahenge', a wooden circle found on the Norfolk coast recently, is on a beach, neither on land or in the sea.
Hallowe'en might be explained this way. It is the ancient festival of Samhainn (pronounced 'Sow-en'). It is on the border of summer and winter, when the spirits were therefore nearer than usual.

The hotel floor thing reminds me of my previous job. The service elevator had a floor labeled ‘M’ and sometimes people would forget that it’s for “maintenance” not “main.” You would press it thinking you were getting the main lobby, and the doors would open to literally a pitch black hallway full of random stuff. Best part? The elevator broke so sometimes the doors wouldn’t shut for some time, so you’d be stuck facing the completely dark hallway, usually all by yourself. Genuine nightmare fuel

as a resident of Atlanta and frequent user of Hartsfield Jackson airport, these photos don't do this place justice. if you land at this airport at like 3am, its almost guaranteed that you're flight is the only one de boarding and if you use the restroom and let the people from your flight get to the baggage claim first, You'll have to navigate the huge web of a maze by yourself and half the lights are turned off and theres a bunch of random unmarked doors everywhere. As long as you follow the signs to baggage claim, though, you won't get lost.

My right thumb is bigger than my left, it's odd how happy it made me when you as one of my favorite youtubers showed you had the same thing 😂 (It's called bilateral brachydactyly type D)

Imagine you and your child go to that indoor playground and you watch your kid have fun and stuff. And then you watch them trip as their head gets stabbed by one of the rhinos. Maybe yoir child tripped so hard that it rips a part off or he gets stuck on it and you can hear his neck breaking by the sudden stop while his lower half still falls. Or if your child is already a bit taller and tries to catch himself on the rhinos back but the pointy end cut open the kids throat. Nothing you can do other than scream for help as you watch your childs live slowly leave their eyes as they're gurgling and spitting up blood trying to breathe.
I swear I'm not a psychopath this is just the first thing i thought when i saw the rhinos. What a safety Hazzard lol

Fun hotel ones probably a Asian love hotel they do themed rooms like that allot if you stayed with friends the staff would definitely stare at you and the smells noises would make sleeping awquard lol😂
But yes an actual fun themed hotel would be a fun surprise even if the Booker would get preview shots.

11:35 i think for me what makes it liminal is the number of signs telling you how to do things, but no ones there to follow them

The weirdest part about that water playground and indoor playground is that there isn't enough natural light getting in. Looks like there's no windows at all.
