  • Rishi Sunak is to resign as Conservative Party leader after a catastrophic election defeat to Labour.
The outgoing UK prime minister announced his resignation outside 10 Downing Street in London.
Sunak said he will not resign immediately - only when formal arrangements for a successor have taken place.
Labour won the UK general election in a landslide, with the Conservatives seeing their worst result - in terms of seats - in the party's history.

If that’s the case then it’s not something we should be happy about.
The world faces new challenges now and the next 10 years will be crucial.
Nationalist governments are corrosive and do our enemy’s work for them delivering things like Brexit in the UK or Donald trump considering pulling out of NATO.
You will also be aware of the global shifting of power away from the west resulting in flashpoints like in Israel -Gaza. Russia invasion of Ukraine, North Korea throwing missiles around and China considering an escalation with the USA over Taiwan.
The last few decades of total US dominance has at least kept a relatively safe world order.
I hope Keir Starmer plays an important part in Europe and globally in brining country’s together for the grater good to preserve democracy and the relatively free way of life we are used to in the West.

In Britain, when you lose the election, you either contest the results, you go tell the king the reason why and they do the recounting or you accept the results and you go hand in your resignation to the king so the next prime minister can go to the king and accept the king's invitation to form a government for the United
      kingdom.

He was voted by the public. That’s why he became an MP. He was voted again and won the 2024 election on his constituency. UK does not have presidential style. The party chooses a leader. People vote for a party and not for a PM. Anyone voted as MP even within labour can become PM. If Labour MP's votes for a motion of no confidence against Starmer in the future, it can change. The other Tory members should do their job correctly to be voted by the public in their constituency. The majority number of MPs won in a party forms a government (N=326) or a coalition if there is no majority. Learn basic politics, please.

@@sanjoyleecheeying It may have escaped your notice, but Boris Johnson was voted in as prime minister by the public. Sunak became prime minister by default, purely because of all the BS that Boris gave to the country, and yet it was firstly passed to Liz Truss with yet more BS, and then the tories passed it on to Sunak. And true to form the country had to endure yet more of the same.

@@sanjoyleecheeying you don't understand political democratic mandate for leadership. You don't understand basic politics yourself. People vote for a PARTY not just an MP and that forms the govt...with the PARTY including a LEADER...the leader has AUTHORITY over PARTY, GOVERNMENT, CABINET APPOINTMENTS and MANIFESTO....If Starmer was now immediately removed by internal party mechanics...there would be an outcry, even more so if the leader were even more popular... You may have missed the 'leaders debates' that all parties agreed to.
