Dean I have been emailing you CONSTANTLY I somehow got an unreleased copy of the next Archspire album you were working on in the mail and it's just an hour of fart noises? Should I send it back to you? Please respond to my e-mails, I'm scared. cheers
When they just played tampa a few months back, the encore was a new track. It was so brutal, Oli shit his pants, and they were white. I still fall asleep every night hearing those fart sounds when I close my eyes.
Spot on, Dean! It’s very difficult nowadays to find like minded competent musicians, sadly. Especially with the economy. That’s why I’m recording my drum audition to Archspire tonight!😏🤘
So you got fallout 1-4, 76, new vegas, the Amazon tv show, and then falloutboy. The first ones are a series of games about post-apocalyptic America, and then the tv series is just an adaptation of that. And the last one im pretty sure is an Archspire cover band.
I joined a band about two years ago to be the singer and rhythm guitarist. Their interest in me was based on hearing my previous band's recordings and them telling me they loved my vocal approach and songwriting style. Once we started to jam, literally every song idea I had was shut down by one or more persons, typically with them saying "that doesn't really fit our style". Well, what did ypu expect me to do, write songs in _your_ style when it was _my_ style ypu claimed you loved and wanted brought to the band? I found out shortly into my brief tenure that they all hated each other lol
This is just a bad thought process by you. They didn't like "your style". They saw what you could do and realized it would work for their bands style. Of course as a new person coming in to an established band you're supposed to write stuff that leans toward the style the band already was. That's expected and normal. They were interested in what you were capable of physically, not in your personal writing. Crazy to think you would just come in to an established band and completely change their sound with no question.
@derpderpin1568 I don't fully disagree with you, however stylistically you have to understand that both they and I were working within the realm of heavy progressive rock so it wasn't like I came in with very radically different stuff. The real distinction between what I do and what they were doing at the time comes down to an overall difference in rhythmic feel, the presence of actual hooks, vocals, and less of a compulsion for parts and sections purely for their own sake (not that that's always a bad thing, but most of their songs felt like exercises rather than completed ideas). They were an instrumental band that said they were looking for a singer and songwriter, but in reality, I think they wanted someone sing over their existing stuff, which was really challenging in terms of technique, and over which vocals would have sounded sort of tacked on, if you get my drift. It was cool music, but personally, I would have been happy not to mess with it. I think bands go through eras, and they quite often need to evolve. Heck, the band I was in for years changed drummers five years in, and his presence completely rewired our sound (for the better). I guess you just have to k ow when to get out of the way and let people contribute their shit. If you know it's good, let it breathe and see where it takes things. Those other fellas are very talented, and they said they wanted out of their box, but the moment the solution came, they stayed in the box.
Man i'd HATE having to deal with pre-existing tensions in a band I just joined... Best of luck to caller dude. Also to Archspire for finding their new drummer
I’ve been on both sides. I tried keeping a band together and left bands that weren’t working out. Neither were fun, but leaving and starting over was easier. Constant lineup changes got old really quickly and we were constantly spinning our wheels just to make sure new members knew our past material. We never had time to write anything new because we were always rehearsing our back catalog. Leaving and starting new took time, but it made music enjoyable again instead of feeling like a chore. Find a balance between talent and camaraderie that allows everyone to improve.
Dean Lamb and the other guys in Archspire are about to deal with some of what he spoke about. Any musician of any genre of metal knows the difficulties of finding a drummer. Then finding a good drummer with the capabilities needed to become the new drummer in your band. That is the easiest part in this. You still like he said be able to integrate the new members personality among the band dynamics when not touring and during a tour. How everyone can mesh with eachother stuck in close proximity to eachother. How the new guy or gal fits socially, interactions with the crowd, fans, other members partners, friends, family, promoters, other bands, studio staff, and labels. Is the person dependable when a promoter doesn't pay and needs coercion to rectify the situation, will this person even show the fuck up after a disagreement? Archspire finds themselves in even more of a disadvantage because of how technical they are. Wish you and the other guys in Archspire luck and a smooth journey on this path you guys now are about to traverse.
dude...what a fantastic idea. I hope this wont be the last time you do this, i think it benefits both the caller if they got a serious question and also gives you perspective sometimes that you can bring to your own band or work
We (David and Courtney) in this band are SO fortunate to have a group of people that follow US specifically. We are also in (aside from this family friendly comedy death metal band) are in a sludge/doom band and a shoegaze/dreampop band, and we've both had quite a few people follow us from one to another and support us along the way. It's really humbling and exciting.
What really sucks with a band is when you bring in, say, a new guitarist with skills, but they only want to focus on changing your logo, selling merch, booking studio time, and working on "stage moves" rather than learning the songs you're supposed to play live. I could never understand that: being focused on things that are down the road when you can't even play the songs in time.
Usta be able to throw your guitarbag on and go for a walk and bump into someone who wants to jam, you dont see alot of potential bandmates out in the wild since the early-mid 2000s.
I want to go off-topic and comment on that headstock. It's cool. I'd like a 6-string version of that headstock on a custom V with a Floyd Rose, if I had money to spend. In fact, I went on the builder section of the Kiesel website one time to see what it'd look like in green because I had a dream that I had a green V the night before.
every time I've ever tried to "put a band together" it ended up being me and one guy who was into it and nobody else took it seriously. There was one time where a dude slept with my wife at the time, so that didn't go great but I was already done with the relationship so it didn't actually hurt or anything, but it didn't help the music any. Yep, suffice to say, every attempt to make a band work has failed in some way or another.
You can't just bait my oblivious ass with a title like that after spences departure holy hell i think my heart just skipped a few beats and subsequently went through a brief 400bpm gravity blast. Nice job, flawless execution! But also wtf multiple fallouts..?
The first caller advice. Try to work things out with other band members peacefully and if it doesn’t work out then move on to find musicians u are compatible with. U are not alone. Also I hope Archspire picks up Lord Marco for the drummer. His audition video was freaking on point. I mean the dude plays with Rings of Saturn, Brain Drill, etc. Other mentions would be John Longstreth of Origin, Hate Eternal, Dying Fetus, The Skinless, etc, Stocki of Cytotoxin, Anthony Barone of Beneath The Massacre, Icelandic Beast from Ophidian I, etc etc etc. Also, I’ve seen people say Samus but even Samus said he cannot do Archspire but most of his delusional fans don’t realize there are levels to drumming apparently. I love Samus and he is an amazing drummer by the way. Anyway, I really wish the best for Archspire and I (and sooo many others) appreciate what they have/continue to do for Tech Death/Music in general.
If i were that dude i would just move on, and if the drummer comes with, that's a huge bonus. There's always new people to jam with, just gotta put it out there.
What you do is you address it give them an ultimatum. Say we are start writing music and practicing if you don't show up or don't want to do this than me and the drummer are forming a new band. Give them either we are doing this or we aren't. You can't force people to do things they don't want to, but you have to address this and get on the same page or leave.

It’s really bad taste to spoil the album like that. I have been waiting years to hear those fart sounds.
