You Might Be Wrong About Kyrie Irving & The Dallas Mavericks.. | Mavs NBA News (Luka Doncic)

  • The trade acquisition of Kyrie Irving by the Dallas Mavericks came to the surprise of literally everyone in the NBA world this week as we approach the 2023 NBA trade deadline. And with the idea of pairing Luka Doncic & Kyrie Irving together in a Mavs backcourt sounds exciting to most, there are also many who like to think this will end horribly for Dallas. But through all of this, there’s some major factors many tend to not be talking about.
While Kyrie Irving has served as the Nets primary ball handler ever since arriving in Brooklyn, this role will be reduced when playing under Jason Kidd in the Mavs lineup. But with Kyrie’s recent success of thriving with ball dominant players, the idea of pairing him up with Luka will do wonders for Doncic’s play as well. And with a supporting cast still standing of Christian Wood, Tim Hardaway Jr, Josh Green, Reggie Bullock, Dwight Powell, Maxi Kleber, Jaden Hardy, etc, many are underestimating what the capabilities of this roster could be when the chemistry is built.
And as the trade deadline for the Mavs still looms, there’s still trade rumors looming stating the Mavericks & Mark Cuban might not be done in trying to improve this roster. But all around, from the Mavs offense and defense’s perspective, this team just made a big push into competing for a 2023 NBA Finals appearance as the Playoffs approach.

Both players don't have to be on the court at the same time. You start both, and give one a rest early, sit the other down after a stretch, and let them sub for each other through the 3rd quarter. For the 4th quarter, they both are in, and if the game is at hand, give the one with more minutes played a break, and let the other settle in for the next game. It's going to come down to rhythm and if Luka can maintain his efficiency with less touches. I'll be interested to see how much more refreshed Luka will be in the 4th without being the only guy for the first 3 quarters. Hardy and Green are also proving that they can help. Either way, it should be fun.

@@miitheweirdartist6794 He was able to play alongside LeBron, and people do compare Luka to Lebron. The bottom line is that winning is a great deodorant, and if Kidd can find the combination early on, putting up with Kyrie for 1/2 a season and Kyrie feeling valued for that 1/2 a season might bode well. I figure that there's more upside here than downside. If Luka and Kyrie don't mesh, Luka can't complain that the FO isn't getting him help. He'll understand that it's not as easy as just bringing in new talent. This will at the very worst help Luka mature some more, at the best, the West is so wild that a trip to the Finals may be in order, although the competition in the East is so fierce that I can't see them winning it all.

Whether this works or not depends on Kyrie Irving, and to a lesser extent, Luka. If Kyrie puts his ego aside, and is determined to complement Luka the way he did with Lebron, it will be amazing. But Kyrie will need to put aside the noise, because there will be some. He has to ignore the media, and even ignore teammates that might be a bit cold with him. Luka wants to win, and he will adapt, as he is able to. As long as Kyrie doesn't try to take over the team, Luka will adjust as needed. They could be amazing together, but both need to be healthy and both have to like each other. There are lot of variables and anything can happen, but there is potential for greatness here.

The difference in the Mavs situation compared to all the others he has been in is they literally need Kyrie’s skill set and ability. If Kyrie stays the Mavs have the ability to clear a bunch of cap space this off-season and build around both of them together have quite a few expiring deals, they get all there picks to trade except the 1 they used on Kyrie. They have two young guys in Green and Hardy who are developing very quickly with more minutes now freed up with Spencer and DFS gone. This season they just need a defensive wing ( Thybulle preferably & he will be cheap ) a legit rim protector who can rebound & space the floor and a back up PG. They will finally get fully healthy at all star break.

They do there job they don’t try to over play themselves and have no egos. Maxi Kleber is for sure undervalued by everyone outside of Mavs fans who watch them every game he is the defensive motor for them was in the playoffs last season as well he has only played 22 games this season and he’s coming back at the all star break hence why there defense has been so bad this year compared to last season when they were I think 5th or 6th in defense. Green is by far and away there best perimeter defender kidd bodied the hell out of Lauri from the Jazz ( 19 points ) the other night and he’s only 6’5-6’6 but can jump out of the gym fast as hell and he’s shooting 42% from 3 and Hardy when given minutes is a pure scorer with high efficiency. I’d suggest go watch the Jazz highlights they aren’t just “good I guess” they have been incredible with there development over the season already it’s why they traded for Kyrie and willing to give up Spencer and DFS frees minutes up for those guys.
