Testing the ms 170 pipe vs a stock muffler. Does an expansion chamber work on a chainsaw? for porting and service info visit the website worksaws.com/c...
@@dynojoemods2764 Have you ever done a test with different fuels? Chickanic did a video on different store bought fuels and some kind of hurt performance and wouldn’t make the rpm of others. If you haven’t would you make a video please?
@@dynojoemods2764 Running a pipe should be fine for the engine, right? I’ve heard it’s not good to run ported saws milling because of they can run too hot under a constant load? Could a pipe help a stock saw run cooler? Would a gasket delete with stock port-timing numbers and ignition timing advance be okay with a pipe on a milling saw?
@@scottallpress3818 That’s exactly what I was thinking. I’m also wondering if a stock saw would run a little cooler, maybe enough to get away with a gasket delete and timing advance.
Meanwhile mine is sitting over here smiling with a hole drilled in it’s muffler lol 😆… Honestly I was surprised how well it runs after all the work I did to it. Cool video Joe, Great content
When I go wide open throttle on my 272 it fourstrokes just like it should but after a second it starts cleaning up and then revs higher until I let go of the throttle because I'm afraid it'll blow up. To me this sounds like a vacuum leak that causes a lean condition but that mfr DOES NOT LEAK! I have pressure/vac tested it to some crazy values and its airtight. This is tested with 2 different carbs.
Well done Joe, I still find it hard to believe that the stock saw made the most amount of torque. HP gains were definitely impressive. Thanks for sharing.
More 170 testing please. I'm as curious as you are Joe on what will hold up or fail. Plus, small saws need love too. 😅
She sings a beautiful tune with that pipe ❤😂😂😂
Great video!! Love the real world testing backed up by the dyno. Thanks👍
-Grind the cylinder to match the pipe man You're gettin' her down to a science
😎👍
It is all a science. Since I'm not rushing to make an event I can take the time to do incremental changes to see the effect.

Rock, on with that little wood cutting machine. Give it an alcohol carb and some pipe and see if you get it into the 5.5 range
Like these dyno sessions trying different things then putting them to the wood. That 170 is holding on well for turning those kind of numbers.
I would def buy one of these pipe for my 170 just for the exhaust note alone
I’ve been led to believe that 2 cycles always run better with a like back pressure in the muffler
Back pressure and 2 strokes are words which should never be used in the same sentence.
Pressing back the fresh air mixture that escaped from exhaust opening with a resonant pipe can give 50%more power.. Like using a turbo
@@dg9bfcnever thought of this until your comment: I wonder if strat saws see the same gains from a pipe as a non-stratified engine might.
I ended up bringing the timing back a bit on mine, seemed to take away rpm but add torque. Mine is also the older style 170 though.
Sounds much better, Its almost a race saw. LOL . Cheers
I’m curious about running a pipe on a milling saw.
I just so happened to win a 36" mill setup at sawfest this year. Might need to pipe a 660 and see how it does....
Would make sense especially since it won’t be in the way

@@PurpleNovember with everything and the pipe designed right it could work in theory. But I am not really sure.
Very Interesting results. Who made the pipe?
I made the pipe.
@@dynojoemods2764 You did a great job. I watched your pipe fabrication video after I asked this question.
Just a thought ? what about pipe wrap on that expansion chamber?
More better on pipe, me thinks!
👍🏻👏🪵
Keep sonic what your doing, maybe sometime you could do a video on mixing oils

Imagine this saw in white pine same size with a race chain...
I like the experimenting with the saws. Interesting seeing what does what to the saws.
I love the little 170s.
This is awesome!
Hey bro, larger carb u mean drilled main jet hole or another carb?
Carb swap
I’ve had this thought for a while. What would happen with full skip chain and a little lower rakers. Would it hold higher rpms,
If it's faster it's worth it! I would like to see alcohol and nitrous! Good video!
How does that tachometer work?
Great video. It’s really nice to follow along with the small steps of a build and see what she does. 👍
What carb are you running joe?
Love the sound of a piped saw on a Sunday morning!
Is that the stock .043 gauge chain? I wonder if the .050 chain would speed up cut times. I really like those 170s more with the bigger chain
That is a 3/8lp picco. 050 14"
@@dynojoemods2764 right on already the bigger chain 👍👍👍

Check the fuel lines, that they are solid no holes or dont get pinched while running
@@dynojoemods2764 that could be, there is a small possibility that the fuel line is 35 years old
Be cool to see a piped 2511

It made the most TQ but it was under 8000rpm in a range that you typically wont cut in.
👌👌👍🏻👍🏻🔊🔊
Do you happen to know at what rpm this saw was 2 stroking/4 stroking at?
It was still plenty rich in the 13k range. Even on pipe it wanted to be above 14k before it was sounding good.
Good stuff Joe! Looks like its figured out now well done!
It is getting closer
what diameter is the cherry you are cutting? I'm trying to gauge performance with my little saws using the cherry I have on hand.
I'd say 10-11" or so.
Thanks, Is that a 14" bar on the ms170?

Yes 14"
