  • A traffic artery, through which 100 thousand cars pass daily. But it's also an endless source of pollution and noise that divides the city. This is the Prague motorway. Are there any plans for change? That's the focus of this episode of Living Prague.
The first cars drove along the motorway in the 1970s. Before that, there were long pedestrian boulevards, which is rather ironic considering that crossing the thoroughfare today is almost a superhuman task in many places. Incidentally, this symbol of "motoring and economic progress" was not to be alone - city planners originally envisaged a system of 6 motorways through Prague.
Today, the authorities are rather wondering what to do with the arterial road next. Although this thoroughfare is primarily used by Prague residents to travel around the metropolis, the completion of a ring road is often mentioned as a solution. This, however, runs into two problems - drivers travelling within the city will not use the ring road anyway, and with the "speed" with which it is being built, this solution is more like music of the future.
Another option considered was to convert the arterial into an urban thoroughfare, as is the case in London. The road would be modified, crossings would be added gradually, trees would be added, lanes would be reduced... However, this proposal was not approved by Prague councillors because of concerns about the flow of traffic in the city.
And there are other ideas - for example, transferring traffic from Mezibranská Street to Legerova Street, which would connect the National Museum with Wenceslas Square. Unfortunately, it looks like we won't see any revolutionary solutions anytime soon.
How do you feel about the main thoroughfare? Could you imagine that it would change drastically and that we would end up without it? Or do you use it regularly? Let us know in the comments.
The arterial is a problem not only in terms of traffic but also pollution. It's no surprise that it ranks at the top of the places with the worst air in Prague. Where is the air the best? Watch our video: • Kde je nejlepší a nejh...
