Glock Model 30s 45 ACP : What's the Deal?

  • I've been a fan of the Glock Model 30 Compact 45 ACP Pistol but it's thick. The Model 30s is also in 45 ACP but has a much slimmer slide and Barrel. It's makes a big difference with felt recoil and Concealed Carrying. Honestly, I didn't know about the Model 30s until about 6 months ago even though it's been out for years. #GlockModel30 #45ACP #Glock
We're taking a look at the advantages and disadvantages of both, but I'm really interested in how they shoot side by side.

The 30s is one of my main carry pieces and I love it... Its the hands down best carry .45 ever and its the most versatile .45 ever (able to accept the 13 round G21 mags)
The 30s is in that perfect sweet spot to carry with a 3.8 barrel and 4.8 height (easier to carry then a 19) its also the hands down best handgun choice for people in 10 round restriction states because your not sacrificing anything or nerfing your capacity...

    I've had it for years.
I would love a 30 to go with it.
The thick grip may not feel as comfortable as a Walther, but the blocky grip wedges into my hand and is very stable. So even though it doesn't feel as comfortable, it shoots better because it's so stable.

One of the reasons why I got the 30S was because my hands aren’t very big. Double stack 45s are problematic for me on follow up shots. The SF frame married capacity with 45 power in a platform I could handle. Best of both worlds.

  • @D70340

I bought the 30S a few years ago. Only thing i hated about it was the gap between the mag and the frame. Real finger pincher for sure. Thankfully, the Pearse base plates fix the pinch issue. I carry mine with the 9 round mag, 2 regular 10rd mags for back up. As for accuracy, i can run a whole 10rd mag, all holes touching in the bullseye. Most accurate compact 45 i`ve ever owned. Thanks Don for the video. The 30S never gets much attention. I had hoped glock would have made the 30S in the Gen4, but they never did. I can only hope they make this 30S in the Gen 5 now. Now we wait, again. COME ON GLOCK! GET IT DONE! WE`RE WAITING! 😒

I've had a 30S since they were made available to the civilian market in 2013. Recently picked up a G30Gen4 and have to say, although chunkier up top, the recoil is noticeably lighter, especially with 185 and 200 grain +P loads. And although I have Talon Pro grips on my 30S, I prefer the stock texturing on the Gen4.

@@jorges2000 My preference is the G30 Gen4. I keep all my Glocks stock (except for sights) and the trigger is a bit cleaner than the Gen3’s out of the box. The grip texture on the Gen4 is what sold it for me along with the larger magazine release.

The Glock 30S was created because people were taking their Glock 36 slide and putting it on a 30 frame. It created a much easier to carry and lighter 45 that still held 10 rounds in the magazine. It also can accept the Glock 21 magazine and any of the aftermarket extendo mags. The only thing that it's not recommended to do is shoot 45 super. I haven't found anyone that seems to have tested that theory.

One other advantage of 30 over 30S is the 30 can take .45 to 10mm conversion barrels or Glock 29 barrels so you can get two calibers out of it (woods & ‘hoods). Thicker barrel and slide of 30 also allow .45smc cartridges to be used.

For those not aware, the design & release of the Glock 30S was in part because of the elite LAPD/SAS 🕵🏽‍♂️🕵🏼‍♀️. After the major issues with custom made Kimber SAS line 1911a1s, the detectives chose the big Glock 21 .45acp guns. After carrying 21s for a bit, the SIS asked Glock to revise, modify compact 30 pistols. SIS needed 30Ss to carry concealed, undercover 🥸 or as a 2nd gun. Glock USA agreed to LAPDs terms but wanted the 30S to sell on the open market.

I ended up in going with the 30SF. Simply because I wanted the ability to use 10mm barrel/mags to have the option of 2 calibers. The 30S was considerably thinner, but couldn't find nearly as much aftermarket for it MINUS holsters. As the 30S fits 19 holsters... Take your pick. 30 holsters are a bit more challenging to find. IMO the 30 is too thick in a holster. I use a TechnaClip on mine. If you don't care about barrel swaps, the 30S is by far the way to go. The 30 is a thick boi, but I love it. 45&10 from one "compact" pistol.

This is pretty simple. The primary features are the slimmer slide width (1” as opposed to 1.12”) and lower slide-assembly weight (it's a full 3.5 ounces lighter than the G30 slide assembly) and with the SF frame, the 30S has a slightly shorter trigger reach and overall grip radius as compared to the plain G30. I owned the 30S and ended up selling it as it didn't really speak to me. I prefer my HK 45C. Cheers!

The 30s is awesome. Probably the king when it comes to size and round count, 11rds. You can use the flush fit 9rd mag too which is even more concealable. You can CCW it or put a light on it and use it for home defense. It is very versatile. The G41 makes a perfect companion. Basically the 41 is the long slide bigger brother to the 30s. With the 9rd mag the 30s is just bigger than the G26. I actually use my 26 holster to carry my 30s. If you were to get and have only 1 gun in 45acp I believe the 30s is the gun to get, period! Though I have a few other pistols in 45acp that I like better none of them are as versatile. It would be last to go which says a lot. You also should be able to put the 30s slide onto the gen4 frame if you wanted too.

Recoil only matters at the training range as you will not be thinking of it during a self defense situation when the adrenalin dump gives you added strength and power to fight better. Of more concern is the grip and how it enables you to shoot accurately. I was at an outdoor range when two Spec Op type of guys entered. After they had shoot off a hundred rounds they were talking about their lack of accuracy. One had a Glock and the other a Sig. I said to them try switching guns and see how you do as a semi serious suggestion. They did so. After another hundred rounds they decided to swap guns because the results were so much better. That was a surprise and it made me realize the importance of the grip.

Great discussion on a couple of my favorite Glocks. I've got both, and carried both for several years. For me, the carryability of the 30S is quite a bit better. I have never noticed much shootability difference, though. The biggest thing for me, though, is that the 30S is only a Gen 3, meaning that I can't swap the mag catch (I'm a lefty). I really wish it was popular enough that they would bring it out in a gen 4 or 5. But other than that, they are both fantastic guns, and if it interests anybody, on Massad Ayoobs' favorites list...for a good reason.

many people don’t realize that a good portion of the recoil and muzzle flip is when the slide moves forward. to test it load three rds in the magazine. fire them and it’s quite noticeable when the slide locks back the recoil and muzzle flip less.

Everytime I walked into the gun store and compared the Glocks , Smiths and Springfields, compared
Triggers, sights. Grip angle and grip texture. Out of the box .
I always walked out with a Springfield.
A few years ago Gen 5's come out then I bought Gen 5 , 34's.
    And had to upgrade
Sights, trigger, and backstrap modifications to get it to were it was optimal. And 33 round Magazines helped me like it better.
It took the Gen 5 before I would own a Glock.

You know that the 30S upper will fit the Gen 4 frame? I thought about doing that to dual wield 30Sesess, just for fun, I think.
My daughter hates Micro Nines. She tried them all. The best 9mm she likes is the M&P Shield Plus. I showed her that the Shield Plus and 30S are virtually identical in size and weight all around. I installed the lightest recoil spring i have (15lbs) in the 30S and she fired 135gr Underwood Xtreme Defenders. She noticed there is less recoil than the Shield Plus with that ammo and the slide is just as easy to manipulate. Both have 10 and 13 round mags. Now, the 30S is her favorite gun. I'm hoping that a Gen 5 will come out soon, I might have to get 2 of them. If not, nothing wrong with getting another original G30S and doing the same modifications.

I don't get why people with large hands complain about Glocks. I have slightly smaller than average hands, and my primary carries are a 30SF (3 seasons), and a G33, also double stack (summer mostly).
If I'm perfectly comfortable with them, the person with "large hands" should be able to shoot them comfortably.
I've cloverleafed 10 of 12 shots, with the two fliers being 2" left. That's not a bad group, so I don't really know what else you expect out of a handgun. I've never had any kind of failure on any round at all.

I have a G36 and have known about the 30s for a while. Just never could justify the 30s. It have a +1 on my G36 magazines. 3 more rounds vs. A slimmer grip that hides easier than my G19. I still want a 30s just haven't talked myself into it. As far as strength. My G36 was made in 2000. 22 years and no issues. Replaced springs and trigger assembly because they are cheap and been updated.

Both are great little handguns. The thickness of the grip on the .45 and 10mm Glocks does aid in soaking up some of that recoil impulse. I really wanted a 30s. I just preferred the Gen 4 grip.

More recoil on S model. The mass is less therefore the shooter absorbs more of the recoil in their hand and arm. The standard model with more mass absorbs the more recoil giving less to the shooter.

I recently picked up a Glock 30. It was an older GEN 3. I really wish I had the 30S. But I can’t complain since I got it for $350. I’m pretty big into Glocks and have experience, taking them down to the last part and after putting a ghost angel 3.0 disconnecter and spring kit in the 30 is pretty great. It’s interesting that the only aftermarket trigger manufacturer that makes large frame Glock triggers is Timney. They are way different than Apex, agency, or Zev. Not sure i trust them but that’s the only option.

I really think that the standard crappy Glock trigger is one of the safety features. Anytime that you lighten the trigger pull on a striker fired gun you're increasing the chances of a negligent discharge. Having said that, I've noticed that the trigger pull on their 45 Autos is noticeably better than it is on many of their smaller caliber models. 🤔👍
