i used to think 808s was some bullshit until i took another listen and focused on the drums and "catchiness while still sadness" factor. He actually pulled that album off well.
A recent example.. Magna Carta.. Holy Grail. The commercials in promotion for the album made it seem like Jay was cooking up a real focused piece of work. Turns out it was just some lazy lyricism with flavor of the month production all over.
I'm gonna say that Recovery was the biggest Hip-Hop album letdown for me. I'm glad Em was able to start cleaning up his life, but I thought it made for some really corny songs. I liked maybe 2 of the tracks on the album, but in comparison to the rest of his albums, that made it a big disappointment for me.
Damn ,recovery is my favourite em album ,the mmlp2 is my second favourite em album but I feel encore was a let down and relapse was disappointing, but hey,to each his opinion
Relapse is one of the worst hiphop albums of all time, but it wasn't really dissapointing. I mean it was dissapointing that it came from Em' but after hearing the singles you should have known.
gammakrush905 When the last two albums were Hell On Earth and Infamous yeah it's disappointing especially because of the fact it took 3 year to release after hell on earth and it was when Mobb Deep started to shift towards a commercial sound. Yeah Infamy is a worse album but by that time the Mobb had already fallen off in my eyes.
Phvrvoh Phonk "Murda Muzik" doesn't sound commercial tho. They were still on their game, but for the last time. After Prodigy's solo record (which also was pretty good), that's when the group stopped making an effort.
Slaughterhouse - Welcome to our House Nas - Nastradamus Hopsin - Knock Madness By the way, Rick Ross didn't kill 50 Cent's career. If you can recall, 50 ruined his credibility as a drug kingpin/street rapper by interviewing his baby mother who gave a whole lot on him being a CO, not paying child support, having rented jewelry, etc. He then published her story about it all in a book entitled "Tia's Diary Deeper Than Rap: Clarity, Truth, and Exposure", just like Ross's 3rd album title. What makes popularity determine what rapper won a battle? Besides, most hip-hop fans are fake and fickle within mainstream. They only care about what's hot or popular. If there is anyone who slaughtered Ross lyrically, it wasn't 50 Cent but it was Lloyd Banks on a diss track called "Officer Down". Now who won?
Food and Liquor 2 was a bigger disappointment than Lasers to me. Going into Lasers I knew it was going to be poppy fluff but it still had some quality songs. I honestly felt tricked once I listened to FL2 because it was so boring and Lupe was rapping at the same tone the whole album. And I actually liked the singles! I just listened to Heart Donor start to finish for the first time a month ago. I agree with C-Town from the review that people wouldn't like FL2 if Lasers never came out. I haven't listened to any of the stuff from his new album just to not get too hyped up.
for me the most recent let down would be ESGN by Gibbs. As far as all time, obviously i wasn't around for all of it but from my understanding people were disappointed in It Was Written when it came out. We've since turned around on it but i can imagine the disappointment after illmatic
jjmaster0922 It was just to put his crew on, he'll come back with more good shit, like Common and his first album, it wasnt that good be he came back with Ressurection
I think the Most Disappointing albums come from those who have so much Hype from just coming into, or coming back to the game. Meek Mill's Dreams & Nightmares, Jay-Z's Kingdom Come, and Lupe's Lasers are easy dissapointments for me
***** Well, personally I liked it (not loved it) but I believe it's because when an artist (in any music) ages and has been around for about 10+ years, you shouldn't expect to much.
Onyx - All We Got Iz Us, Talib Kweli - Beautiful Struggle, Mobb Deep - Infamy, Common - Electric Circus, Mos Def - Tru3 Magic, Nas - Nastradamus, Black Sheep - Non Fiction, Jay Z- Blueprint 2, Ice Cube - War & Peace, Boot Camp Click - For The People, Akinyele - Aktapus, The Roots - Tipping Point
Encore has to be biggest disappointment in hip-hop, but I still think it's brilliant that it's called Encore. Like Em knew he can't make a good album, but the label and fans didn't want him to quit (remember how he had that Curtain Close skit on Eminem Show like he' was about to Say Goodbye to Hollywood, pun intended). I'm not defending it, it's still wack but I think it's still amazing that even at that Encore time, he was still 110% self-aware.
Knock Madness was pretty disappointing. I mean Hop worked on that album forever and it just felt mediocre. Every song felt the same. Overall weak message. I like Hopsin a lot and I hope he puts out something great in the near future.
Yo Feefo brought up Charles Hamilton tho. Good looks. Surprised someone remembered him. I think the sonic thing was a little deeper than a gimmick. Still listening to his sh*t. Gotta remember him kinda rap battling Kendrick back in the day too. Good times.
After hearing "Black Skinhead" and "New Slaves," I was really excited for "Yeezus" But when reviews came out saying it was pretty bad, I just left it alone. So I was gonna consider it a disappointment here, but realized I can't honestly say that if I've never heard it myself. So I listened to it and I actually really like how it sounds. I haven't really listened to the lyrics, yet, but I can't say this is a bad album. I like it.
Four obvious ones: Canibus - Can-I-Bus. So much promise leading up to this and then a complete letdown. Souls of Mischief - Their 2nd album wasn't even in the same league as their first. Kurupt - Kuruption - All the f-ing spitting capacity in the world spread over a double album of themes from both coasts and he didn't do sh*t with either one aside from that C-Walk track on the WC disk. Ras Kass- Soul on Ice - To be fair, I like this album. And, if you give it time, it grows on you and you can appreciate how brilliant his wordplay is. But, ETC should have been a single, and the Diamond D remix of the title track should have been on the album. He just needed a few more head-nod joints and this shit would have rung out on both coasts.
How about "Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album" was fucking disappointing. Most fans of the original Food & Liquor did not see that album as a legitimate sequel to the first. And it had A LOT of hype.
I would probably put Magna Carta on there and I actually like the album. It was a good album...but in this instance "good" just wasn't good enough. With the amount of buzz that it got from that commercial during the finals and the unprecedented marketing plan, Jay had a chance to make this another classic and really be remembered for something. Instead we just got a good album.
Agree. But Kingdom Come was the biggest letdown coming off the black album, remember Jay had come back from retirement & was doing very few features, so all the hype, total let down.
From 2013: Hopsin's Knock Madness and Kanye West's Yeezus. I still liked Yeezus, but it comes nowhere near the rest of his career. Biggest disappointment of all time: Tyler, the Creator's Goblin. So much hype up to that album, Yonkers was a great song, Bastard was a great album, then we got Goblin. At least he redeemed himself on Wolf.

Great video guys! Love your stuff! Keep up the great work! In terms of disappointing albums recently, Magna Carta Holy Grail was disappointing and Pharoahe Monch's "Desire" album back in 2007 was massively disappointing too. Or what about DMX's latest album? Lots of disappointing shit.
Born Sinner was a huge disappointment easily. He starts the album saying it's gonna be darker and going off on an awesome song (Villuminati) and afterwards proceeds to rap the exact same shit he's been rapping for years.
I do agree born sinner was to conservative. If every track had been like Villuminati, crooked smile, let nas down, power trip and born sinner the album would have been incredible a sheer masterpiece. But I still love cole and the album was solid, i hope his next one blows born sinner out of the water.
Just some off the top of my head: Eminem- Encore, Relapse, T.I.- T.I. Vs. Eminem : Encore & Recovery
Jay Z : Kingdom Come
MF Doom & Bishop Nehru : Nehruviandoom
Lil Wayne : Tha Carter 4
Ab Soul : These Days
Tyler The Creator : CHERRYBOMB ( This is coming from a big Tyler fan)
50 Cent : Curtis
Madlib, MED, BLU : Bad Neighbor (Came out just last week and already a disappointment)
+upshawjohn94 I think Soul was under pressure with all the attention TDE was getting. Not a bad album but a disappointment for sure.
I was gonna argue with you but I can't lol ... bishop neruh isn't good enough to be with doom to me and j.cole only had a few on to remember ....WATTBA is one and drakes albums have been and newest one 6God will be all hype but be trash REMEMBER THIS COMMENT lol only a few track...also kanye has changed so his will be bad too sorry to say
Yeah man I wish DOOM collabed with Earl Sweatshirt or Joey bada$$.. Bishop nehru is good, but these 2 are just on whole other level in my opinion.
I'd trade encore and recovery with mmlp2 and relapse. but to each is own
+pat mason get the fuck out
you guys should do a most underrated albums of all time
To me ... "Lasers", by far. Not only in rap, but in music in general!
The Firm was a Let Down for me. It wasn't bad, but I was expecting something much better from the group that was put together!
Feefo mentioning charles hamilton made this video for me.
Major!!!! props to Feef for mentioning pink lavalamp, shit is a classic album/mixtape bar none.
Food & Liquor II by Lupe Fiasco
Change the settings to HD, it will then show the video. You're welcome.
ESGN from freddie gibbs was a huge disappointment
Jay-Z "Kingdom Come"
is it just me or is the screen pitch black?
I can't see anything either. Gonna try back in a few.
