    Hip hop came out of rebellion and breaking rules, look at the elements of the culture: Tagging (seen as vandalism), Breakdancing (not conventional, dangerous) DJing (sampling and ripping other music), Rapping (not singing or conventional songwriting). Because it is now a leading genre, questions like these will arise. However, rap music is probably the tantamount example of a genre that should have no rules applied to it.

    The only rule in Hip Hop should be be yourself/and be authentic. If you want to wear a kilt then wear a fucking kilt, if your think you can rap go for it. But just don't be fake about what your talking about. If you never sold drugs then don't talk about that shyt. Rap about what applies to you. That's it.

    • @blancmage31
      @blancmage31 10 лет назад

      hip hop, like all art, is all about perception. Authenticity died a long ass time ago. The art is effective if you can use your voice and persona and image to reinforce the things that you're saying. it doesn't have to be real. I would love to hear more hip hop about things other than being from the gutter/how hood you are though. Too many privileged kids rapping about selling drugs out here lol. you can rap about your privileged life, just be creative, make it interesting. no matter how much money a person's parents had, they still have something to say...

    • @bgkid14
      @bgkid14 10 лет назад

      DxtsMusic But even with everything you named the core of it is coming from someone who from the setting. Ice T talked about thing from "his", it's well documented that 50 Cent sold drugs and was shot 9 times. It's also now the Biggie got arrested for selling crack. I'm saying your persona doesn't meet your reality, then you shouldn't be rapping.(or at least rapping about things you know nothing about and have't been apart of)

  • @doomfan12345
    @doomfan12345 7 лет назад +6

    I heavily rock with Beezy's rule. That's how you survive in the game. Vince Staples, DOOM, iLL Bill, Gambino, Slug, Chance, Kendrick - if they didn't rap how they want while still retaining a distinctive identity, they wouldn't be where they, nor who they are, in this day.

  • @LouieV6
    @LouieV6 10 лет назад +3

    I agree with Myke. Putting rules and regulations in Hip-Hop would go against what the culture originally stands for. The beautiful thing about the culture is that it allows artist to express themselves however they pleased, whenever they pleased. If there were any rules to Hip-Hop, then it wouldn't be a culture to begin with. it'd just be another religious system, for a lack of a better term.

    My rule would be, in order to say a rapper is the "best" rapper, you have to have some knowledge of other rappers. I know people are entitled to their opinions and i'm cool with other peoples opinion, I just don't think if all you've heard was 1 album and shit you've heard on the radio recently you can decide who is or who isn't "best" rapper. Eminem is one of the dopest MCs out and if you tell me he's the best i'll respect your opinion and even see why you say it, but if all you've heard is Eminem and you compare him to radio artist or someone without a good catalog, then I won't take your opinion seriously. You should at least listen to other talent before you go around shouting out whos the best, like most 13 year old kids on youtube do.

      I'm glad you mentioned this, it's exactly how I feel. I hear people say 2pac and Biggie are the best and the same people don't take the time to listen to other artists like Rakim, Nas, Big Pun, A tribe called quest, or whoever. Even the ones that say Pac and Big are the best don't even listen to their music outside of the popular songs they have. They listen to California Love or Big Poppa but have never heard of God Bless the Dead, So many tears, troublesome 96, everyday struggle, the what, etc. It's all about expanding horizons and this applies outside of hip hop too.

  • @peterbadami4172
    @peterbadami4172 10 лет назад

    I never understood the "be original" mentality in Hip Hop. The Genre was built on the foundation of loops and samples of other musician's songs. Take a James Brown funky drummer beat break, a Bootsy Collin Baseline, an Ahmad Jamal piano run here, add a Chicago horn section here, or an Albert King guitar lick here. I love hip hop not because it is original, but because it bridges the gap musically between mine and my parents generation.

    If you think of Hip Hop as a system of sorts, then you can compare it to like freedom of speech, or capitalism, or religion. All of those are based on an ideology of freedom, but still retain basic guidelines for sake of protection. I can't scream fire without a fire, I can't form a monopoly, and I can't inflict danger or injury on another due to my religion. Rules are then made not to limit or inhibit growth, but to protect people from those who would cheat the system.
    And as I thought of this, I realized what B's thoughts were went over everyone's heads, and we didn't really think about it. To be original is to be wholly exclusive to your own thoughts and craft, it's just as they said all video long, it's SELF expression. By extension, someone should have proposed the rule to enforce rules against plagiarism. I don't mean lock away samples beats and vocals, just don't take someone else's shit and pass it as your own. That should be a rule, easily.

    The only rule that hip-hop needs is probably the only rule that any form of music needs: Keep it interesting.
