Anything in space-time is not part of reality. But there IS an objective reality. It just has nothing to do with space-time, which is our construction, our interface with reality.
His concept of millions of conscious, subjectively experiencing agents spread out in the cosmos in interaction resembles Leibniz' notion of monads. Amazing. "Conscious Realism."
WOW!!! This is a great session. I will share this interview with people who can think in these terms. I recommend to you the TED Talk by April Seth entitled: "Your brain hallucinates your conscious reality." I think you will see that we are always filling in the blanks by what we expect. Enjoy the TED Talk.
My puzzle is: If everything we perceive and represent is part of the interface of fitness payoffs, why is consciousness outside of this interface? Why is consciousness presumed to be something different? To this end, why is there a hard problem only in the case of consciousness?
Perennial philosophy doesn't have a hard-problem. It's consciousness all the way down. No inside, no outside. A problem arises when scientist's -- who believe that solid matter exists -- have to show how consciousness arises from non-conscious matter. Is this along the lines of what you were asking?
@@jamesthomas1244 I read him as asking why don't we presume that consciousness itself is part of the interface and interface only. Remove us from our interface and we may see (odd to even say this as there would be no we) that there is only the absence of consciousness. I see this as yin yang, emptiness and fullness etc.
If reality in itself is nothing like what we see in our headset, then reality is nothing like evolution; therefore, nothing that characterizes evolution can produce and shape our headset.
Evolution isn't talking about what is in the sense of ontology. It is describing a process that could happen to any substrate or substance given certain circumstances.
I’m struggling to understand this: If evolution by natural selection doesn’t exist when it is not perceived, then how can it cause our virtual reality headset?
Maybe I should expand that, don theorizes (not sure what caveats he gives for this, could just be reasonable speculation leading from his axioms etc) that there is no limit to resources outside of space-time. Time is in some sense the factor that limits us from experiencing that limitless resource state. But this also means there is no evolution outside spacetime, and it only occurs as an experience of the projection from outside of spacetime.
Indeed ridiculous how many people think of ourselves as the "ultimate end product of 4+ billion years in the middle of the observable universe". No you're, by complete chance, on a random rock & a member of the last remaining hominid species (essentially a random species, can argue any species is the greatest based on the criteria (& nobody is perfectly rational/ objective, would be useless, boring and likely mal-adaptive anyways if we were). To each their own, just important to know imo to actually enjoy this existence / journey instead of constantly overly fretting how to successfully best manage this brief existence lol
Consciousness is a computational processor just like a computer. Consciousness processes mathmatical computations like the brain into 3D visual pictures - sounds like a computer to me.
"If anything you study takes part inside spacetime then you're studying the interface and not objective reality." I don't think I can agree with that. Sounds like he's confusing mathematical models with *deeper* reality.
Sounds to me like we have a theory here that allows for the existence of DMT entities. Michio Kaku has also said he believes there exists a superhighway of energy beings that can materialize in our frequency of existence....reality is getting very unreal... far out man
Thinking out loud - am I on the right path here?

I see Hoffman’s work as a synthesis of Kantian metaphysics and evolutionary psychology.

Yummy ty kindly from the west coast of canada
"spacetime is doomed" ....beautiful
This one was wild! First time I am hearing about this perspective. Let me check what Sam Harris has to say about this haha
This interview blew my mind. Great stuff!
Thanks, Adam! And thank you for your support.

Thanks, Steve! I really loved this interview.
For your interest, Donald Hoffman also gave a TED talk: www.ted.com/talks/donald_hoffman_do_we_see_reality_as_it_is/discussion?en
Then go research DMT and your mind will wake up in the matrix like Neo. The future is looking extremely interesting, to put it as mildly as I can...
Consciousness converts information into a physical representation of that information.
Awesome! eye opening.

Consciousness / brain constructs a 3 dimensional reality from 2 dimensional information - holographic reality/virtual reality. Fascinating
Our human body - brain and all other organs are then information being constructed into 3D reality by consciousness?
correct...

Evolution does exist and is one of Don's pillars that he stands on with his theory.

Zoop ok then tell us about your scoop on reality then😃

Saying that evolution gave us our headset is like saying that an object on our desktop interface gave us our desktop interface.
