How Tongue Scraping Can Affect Heart Health

  • Tongue scraping can boost the ability of the good bacteria in our mouth to take advantage of the nitrates in greens to improve our cardiovascular health.
    There was so much juicy stuff packed into a single video! Let me emphasize some of the key points. I have tons of videos about our microbiome, but, normally, I’m mostly only talking about the gut microbiome. We have a skin microbiome, good and bad bugs that live on our skin and affect conditions like acne and eczema, for instance. We have a microbiome in our ear canals, living in our ear wax. And, yes, we have an oral microbiome that doesn’t just determine the health of our gums and teeth, but it also has systemic consequences, converting the nitrates in beets and green leafy vegetables into the “open sesame” nitric oxide molecule that allows our arteries to relax and dilate open.
    It’s a team effort. When you hear Dr. Esselstyn talk about the miracle of nitric oxide for your heart and how heart patients should eat greens six times a day, yes, yes, yes! But, you can’t take full advantage of all of those greens without these good bacteria on your tongue. That’s why antibacterial mouthwash is such a bad idea and why antibacterial mouthwash is not the way to deal with bad breath, because, when you use it, you’re killing your nitric oxide-producing bugs, too. If you never eat vegetables, it doesn’t matter much either way, but if you want to keep the good bugs happy, follow these three tips:
    1. Don’t use antibacterial mouthwash.
    2. Eat a plant-based diet because vegans have more of the good bugs.
    3. Tongue scrape every day, as regular tongue cleaning boosts the good bacteria, too.
    Let’s get to the nitty gritty. What is the best way to clean your tongue? That’s the topic of the last video in this series: How to Clean Your Tongue (nutritionfacts....

    i eat an organic wfpbd and i brush my teeth and tongue every evening. i use only baking soda and reverse osmosis water. i use an extra soft brush and brush very gently, rinsing thoroughly. i also rinse after every meal. if i feel i have bad breath i chew a sprig of parsley, it's very effective. i believe dr. gregor did a video on this.

      He addressed this in one of the previous videos. Tongue brushing is, apparently helpful in introducing oncogenic compounds into deeper cellular layers of the tongue surface. Coupled with the inflammation it creates via mechanical stress, the practice creates a favourable milieu for development of the oral cancer.
      Tongue scraping and brushing, as well as plaque removal (done in a dentists office) can always potentially cause coronary infections, but in reality that happens very, very rarely. Still, to be on the safe side, MDs usually recommend patients to avoid it altogether in specific cases.

      He has previously talked about that. The nitrates have synergy with other plant compounds so that nitrates in meat caused harm and nitrates in plants were beneficial.

    • @wildrice8199
      @wildrice8199 2 года назад +11

      It has to do with added vs naturally-occurring. Added nitrates in meat will react with things in the meat and from the cooking of the meat to create cancer causing compounds. Naturally-occurring nitrates in vegetables will form beneficial nitric oxide. If you watch this channel you will learn you can't look at things in isolation and say they are good or bad. Sugar is bad if it's in the form of cookies, but good in blueberries. You have to look at the whole food.

    What about the tongue-scraping value of fibrous food themselves?

    • @wadepatton2433
      @wadepatton2433 2 года назад

      That goes back as far as humanity and before. It's a totally natural process that our genetics have had 100's of 1000's of years to deal with. This is also why whole plant foods are so difficult to overeat or suffer malnutrition from. The troubles we have for the most part are all from modernized food supply and environmental contamination. Fibrous foods and chewing them up are what our bodies yet crave, and benefit best from, by the "programming" written over the last few 100,000 years. Therefore and thereby fibrous foods are no issue at all for most folks. Our REAL problem is fiberless foods designed by man, not Nature.

      Salt water temporarily raises the pH in your mouth (less acidic), slowing down and killing some of the bacteria from dehydration, but also making the oral environment better for brushing since you don't want to brush any acids into your teeth.
      It would say it's generally better than a commercial mouthwash to rinse with salt water then rinse with water.

I don’t like arugula, so rather than ruining recipes with it, I chew on it in the morning strictly as a supplement. Supposedly the more you chew it the better.
