What Citra's Shutdown Means For 3DS Emulation

- Preservation of the Nintendo 3DS library goes into disarray. Unsupported fan projects. Fear and intimidation that stunts current emulation projects. These points and more are the result of Citra and Yuzu's hasty shutdown after a fine of over $2 million by Nintendo earlier today. The response has been varied. This video goes over how the 3DS emulation scene in particular is somewhere we should focus our attention.

2:26 : Emulation isn't a crime. Emulation is completely legal providing you own the game you're emulating.
Chubb located
just owning a copy of the game isnt enough though, you'd also have manualy extract the data from the copy yourself to be able to legaly emulate it
I used to think that’s true, but I think since games have copy protection, dumping the games you own would also be considered illegal. Ethically you should be able to do whatever you want with what you own, but it’s whatever. If dumping your own game is just as illegal as downloading a game you don’t own online, you might as well just download online
what is illegal i think was yuzu charging for early access versions of their emulators, so for newer game releases it’s pay to play something they didn’t conceptualize, if it were an optional donation, then it would have been legal
Some could argue that the Patreon payments given to Yuzu went towards an emulator where piracy flourished, intended or not.
The answer: it doesn't, except it makes it much much harder for the average person to find a mirrored copy.
Few....
The bigger issue is Citra had great online servers to play 3DS games online. Especially now that 3DS servers are dead.
Panda 3ds emulator is the answer
@@sylentnoise932They’re not dead yet.
How can you get it to work on steamdeck? It doesn’t let you download citra anymore
Emulation and piracy aren't the same, although a lot of people who emulate also pirate their games. Also, statistically, the vast majority of people who pirate wouldn't play the game otherwise, so the profit lost by the billion dollor corporation is less than neglegable.
I tried to draw a distinction between how emulation, while used for preservation, can have an effect on Nintendo's profits, and how piracy in general is what Nintendo are fighting against. Nintendo 'emulate' their games themselves, like the most popular example is NSO.
@@KirbysterPlaysNintendo has gone on record to say they hate all emulation and say it stifles innovation which is both objectively wrong and also hypocritical because they themselves use emulators frequently

No one cares
I care.
I’m absolutely gutted.
I never got around to emulating acnl despite the fact it was a defining game in my childhood and I heard about your project too late and it’s so horrible.
Nintendo clearly doesn’t give a fuck about its user base, video game preservation and the fans of old games that they refuse to make accessible years down the line.

What do you mean 'a step in the right direction' Nintendo has been doing this for decades and are literally known for handeling emulation in a notoriously hostile manner. You yourself aknowledged that the eshop shutdown locks someone out of content, how else are you supposed to get it then? If Nintendo would *for once* open a permanent and User friendly digital content library, like literally every other conpetitor in the indusrty, then Nintendo wouldn't have such problems with piracy anyways.
“A step in the right direction FOR NINTENDO”, fixed it for you. Any sane person would agree with you, but not the company that’s losing money because of it. In THEIR point of view, it’s a step in the right direction, when it’s clearly not and will only cause more problems later down the line.

People always talk about this situation as if taking away the websites and repos means that nobody can ever use citra or Yuzu again. That's just false. You can't un-write code. The programs are already out there, and they're here to stay. All the people who already had these emulators installed, they'll still be able to use them. Even nintendo can't scour the entire world, checking everyone's drives, just to delete all copies of an emulation tool. It's here to stay.
The source code has been public and is backed up on millions of others hard drives. I downloaded the recent builds a few days ago. I know for sure there will be clones with better features and compatibility. Right now I play the emulators on my retroid pocket 4 pro with no slow downs and better graphics on standard performance. I think we have the 3ds and ds in a good place right now.
Now i can't play fire emblem revelations because it was a digital only game
Or Pokemon ultra sun because I just got my darkinium z for my primeape before it shut down
Holy cr*p, downloaded citra a few weeks ago and enjoyed it very much.
Time to make some backups
I downloaded Citra just a month ago
I was downloading right now man it's the best emulador for 3ds i don't Will waste this app
I downloaded Citra on my laptop a year ago and after seeing the news about Citra and yuzu getting shut down due to the nintendo 2M fine.
Guys I used citra for months trading and progressing in ORAS trying to fking complete the national dex without any cheats or bugs :( and after hearing this news I am broken
[I was halfway through ig 362 or smt]
And I can't download it to play Ocarina of Time, how fun is that?
Yuzu's success is it's own downfall.
Yuzu get serious attention from Nintendo because it allow Zelda TotK to be played day one. Good for the fans, but of course it pissed Nintendo.
Going forward emulator devs have to be careful when to allow a game to be playable. 6 month probably good enough.
Here’s a thought: I downloaded citra on retroarch, and maybe you can still do that.
So what are the other alternatives to play such 3ds pokemon games on?
I don't mind Citra going away too much, I homebrewed my DSi XL and New 3DS XL so all I need is dumps, plus it just feels better to play on original hardware since I need two screens and a touch screen, I'd use Citra mostly for recording 4K gameplay.
lets see what they gonna do when we stop buying their sht
we arent, emulation was a relatively small portion of the community, just because they took down an emulator doesn't mean people are gonna stop buying their shi
3:59 Considering that TOTK runs much better on PC, without FPS drops and has mods and 4K resolution available, it's not about the 70$ price tag, it's about the quality of the Switch being terrible.
im confused bc im currently sitting on there website, also munching orange just done a stream using x and y
no problem. people were pirating games for these emulators, so they will find ways to download it even the main page is down. sadly we dont get updates, but it is what it is. people will find ways to use citra and yuzu
I still have hope for Mikage.
Change my mind
Could be a sign that Nintendo will build the next switch possibly with a option for 3ds cartridges I really hope that they do that
you have to be delusional to expect that
Never happen. Nintendo has always been anti consumer.
Ever since the 80s, "chip shortage."
If buying isn't owning, piracy isn't stealing.
2:30 it still is illigal in canada it is just considered as a copyright law
Gonna be real with you the only reason I have Yuzu downloaded is because I just was bored and wanted to see how NSMBUDX would run on my shit computer (alright, actually!) but now I am keeping it here on my laptop with my life, holy shit
personally i also have a working 3ds after 10 years, however i really wanted citra for better graphics..
Why won't they actually release the last few 3ds games, including Luigi's Mansion and Mario & Luigi remakes on the switch because I was happy playing the switch, and it is ridiculous to not have these games
And port games to the switch?
After watching this video, I have no clue if this guy is for or against emulation. Sounded like he kept flip flopping in opinions
Nintendo pls dont go after dolphin they atleast dont promote piracy unlike yuzu with totk
The tears of the kingdom having a million pirated copies had no citation most likey just a made up number
They got shutdown as they pirated and promoted. Luckly others dont so where kinda safe.
It means absolutely nothing but motivating the right people to make something better out of spite for Nintendo.
This kind of action didn't worked during the NDS era, it won't work now.

Yeah that sucks.
(first)
It must be shouted from the rooftops as even yourself has made the blunder here. Number of pirated copies =/= direct loss of revenue to Nintendo. Most people who pirate things never would have bought it to being with.
This is completely on them.. And all the people on here spewing their half baked ideas as to why this is happening and "EvIl nInTeNdO bAd!" are nothing but simple minded fools.. The truth is, Nintendo had every right to take Yuzu down, it's absolutely costing them money. And Citra was in the crossfire. And if the team at Yuzu had quietly worked on the Yuzu emulator and released it AFTER the Switch was discontinued, we would still have both likely.. It's irresponsible and foolish to actively encourage emulation WHILE THAT SYSTEM IS STILL ON MARKET! Yuzu developers are getting exactly what they deserve and I won't defend someone who puts ALL of the emulation scene at risk because you're too stupid to see what you're doing.. These mouth breathers who are blaming Nintendo are so ignorant and self absorbed, that they lack the ability to see the whole picture. It's a cringe reminder that these people don't care about emulation, they care about their own selfish desires to play games without paying for them. Whan emulation SHOULD be is a means to resurrect or maintain systems that are no longer supported by the original developers.. Not a means to save you $50..
hum, nope, the issue here isn't the emulator itself, if that was the case they could have gone to court and win, the shit of the situation is that Yuzu team offered in their patreon rewards access to an exclusive discord server providing pirated copies of the games pre release. If they didn't made that stupid discord and basically commercialized distribution of pirated copies nintendo wouldn't even sniffed them.
An emulator doesn't cost money to the company, mainly because the people that will use said emulator and pirate in the first place doesn't have the will or the money to buy their game and system in the first place, this is something that has already been proved time and time again, Gabe Newell, president of Valve mentioned several times that piracy isn't an issue of setting up 300 DRM systems and anticheats and all that stuff, it's a problem of price, availability, ease of access to the product and quality, all point's which nintendo suffers from.
I certainly won't pay 70$ for a game like ToTk just to see it run at 20FPS on my switch, just because nintendo decided that yeah "let's run the RAM memory at 800mhz instead of 1600mhz" making the worse bottleneck of the system, which a simple tweak to memory frequency solves 99% of performance issues on the system, a tweak that literally doesn't affect negatively anything else, maybe at most 2 or 3 less minutes of total battery duration.
