The Midnight Express was Randy Rose & Dennis Condrey, in Southeast and came from the fact they drove black cars. Norvell Austin joined them and they did a Freebird 3-man gimmick, in Memphis. At the same time, Robert Gibson was teaming with older brother Ricky Gibson. Bobby Eaton was teaming with Sweet Brown Sugar, aka Koko B Ware. Ricky Morton had been teaming with Ken Lucas, in Memphis and San Antonio. Gibson and Morton started teaming on B-shows, as a second tier Fabulous Ones, essentially. Bill Watts came to Memphis to scout talent to help pump up his territory and took Bill Dundee, as a booker, Jim Cornette (who was the B-show manager, with Jimmy Hart on the A-shows) as a manager, Condrey & Eaton, as a new Midnight Express, and Morton & Gibson as the babyface tag team. The rest is history. Cornette and Dundee had worked the deal between Memphis and Georgia, to do the Georgia Superstars program, and run a crew in the Georgia towns, while the main crew was busy with the Ohio and West Virginia end of their territory. Dundee booked and wrestled and Corny managed his Dynasty of Champion, with King Carl Fergie, Norman Frederick Charles III, the Angel and the Bounty Hunter. Bobby Fulton and Terry Taylor were the babyface team, as the Fantastic Ones. The deal was short lived and Corny was back in Memphis, managing people like Danny Davis & Ken Wayne, as the Galaxians. Fulton eventually hooked up with Tommy Rogers, to form the Fantastics, as a replacement Rock N Roll Express. Taylor worked as a solo babyface, getting a push in Mid-South/UWF.
The Original Norvel Austin , Randy Rose, Dennis Condry , were way before that , what you speak of . Koko and Bobby hadn't even teamed up yet, Bobbly was still working for nick gulas , and hadn't been to memphis yet, when the originals were doing the MNE gimick .
Sounds solid and about the way I remembered. Rick Gibson would also tag with Ricky Morton, whose dad was the senior ref at the time Paul Morton. B9bby was successful as a singles wrestler before he was a great tag guy; same with Koko. There was a time I remembered Koko and Bobby coming up getting beat by top teams, but they were great workers. Most of the guys who started in Memphis could work, hence the success of Hogan, the Honkey Tonk Man, Jeff Jarrett, and Kamala in WWF, the Fabs, Lawler and Dundee in the AWA, and Eddie Gilbert and Sid Vicious wherever they went. The Rock, Scott Steiner, and others started there for a short period while Sabu, RVD, Raven, Macho Man, Rick Roode, New Jack, Taker, Steve Austin, Jackie Moore, Sting, Ultimate Warrior, and many others came through on their way to stardom or needing development.
I'm certainly glad Dutch included the Midnight Express! I liked each version equally well...with Bobby Eaton being the featured wrestler. "Loverboy Dennis" or "Sweet Stan" could pair up with "Beautiful Bobby" ( by many Professionals' testimonials...the most well-liked/ popular and underrated Wrestler)!

They get my vote for best Heel Tag Team . The Andersons were also really great - Very Believable and you couldn’t help but hate them !!
I have to kindly disagree on face teams...The Midnight Rockers/The Rockers were the best face team after The Rock 'N Roll Express...go back and listen to the crowds when The Rockers were peaking in WWF, those high pitched squeals from the ladies were almost on par with Morton/Gibson...but the all time best tag team, hands down, was Eaton/Condry Midnight Express...I've seen almost every match they ever had, and buddy, they were amazing! All their great dance partners certainly helped, though...I love bullshitting about Pro Wrestling...
Saw Morton and Lucas many times in Beaumont Texas.... really cool guys who often, after their match, would sit in the crowd and talk to the fans....I miss this territorial days 😢
Most fans these days would say that the Hardy Boyz, Dudley Boyz, Edge and Christian, APA, Outlaws etc, from 97-02ish is the golden generation, but real G’s know, the Rock and Roll, the Midnight, the Fantastics, the Fabulous Ones, the Road Warriors, Arn and Tully, Hart Foundation, Demolition, British Bulldogs etc. that 84-89 period was when tag team wrestling was at its best
Good point because around that time you had teams like Killer Bees , original Dream Team, US Express, Shiek and Volkoff, Kolloffs, Ole and Arn , Strike Force , Islanders, Rougeaus etc
We're getting old my man, those who watch wrestling today will never see what we had the opportunity too see. The greatness in the 80's with teams like the midnight and rock and roll, the fabulous ones, the fantastics, Demolition, Arn and Tully, Freebirds, The rockers, Hart Foundation, groups like the four horsemen, etc..Then we got to see the rise of the attitude era and the WCW/WWF wars.. Possibly the greatest times to watch wrestling when it had the national spotlight and generated real emotional connection. Now it all seems like a pale imitation that lacks any form of controversy or believability.

Nobody annoyed me more than that dork Cornette with that tennis racquet. Face/Heel: Road Warriors. I loved them no matter what. My favorite tag team move will always be the clothesline off the top rope.
David Lee Roth and Van Halen had that Rock & Roll look. The Midnight Express versions with Bobby Eaton were the ones known for their work and formed in MidSouth Wrestling after Bobby left Memphis.
Condrey was in Memphis as well, he was part of the original midnight express, he also teamed with David Schultz, as well as Phil Hickerson as the bicentennial kings. He was traded to watt's along with cornette and Eaton..
The one tag team history and fate robbed us of. That would have been a great old school New York territory gaga style over substance tag team ala Rocca and Perez etc. but with the added twist of having a great all around working in ring babyface in Ricky Steamboat in it. Almost certainly would have extended the time both of them spent in top spots and made them a lot of money!
