For me the EX/Poly-800 is a very underrated synthesizer. Although t has a very digital oscillator with a fake sawtooth, envelopes full of aliasing, it has a great filter and with a good programming is capable to get serious tones out of it. I have a Mk II and love it.
It does not have a digital oscillator. It has DCO which is a digitally controlled oscillator, which is very different. The MKII is not good, they got rid of the best feature, which was the analog chorus and replaced it with a digital delay. I love it too.
I wouldn't say it replaces them but it definitely quenches a lot of the thirst...haha. Speaking of poly synths, episode 20 is coming and it's gonna be one of the most legendary of poly synths. ;)
gjc82071 I gave the DerpMind a try, and it bores me. I can't explain why. It doesn't bad, but it didn't have a personality to me. Plus I super-hate the keys.
Wow. Well, I guess that's your opinion. Personally I find the Deepmind to be the exact OPPOSITE of what you've described, in every single way. It's exciting, interesting, fun to play & edit/program, it has tons of personality, charm & character, and I love the keys. I own 3 dozen synths & have played dozens more. The only "boring" synth I've ever play is the Akai Timbrewolf. I hate my Timbrewolf & I'm looking to sell it. If Akai would've given it an ADSR envelope, it could've been a decent little synth.
I really want to love the minilogue or the prologue but there's something about these old synths that are sonically a cut above...idk...I'm trying to be very objective listening and trying many of them out. The built in effects on modern synths don't usually help because they are not as good as what one can add out of the box imho.
I agree as well. For sub-$500 vintage poly synths, check out the Korg Poly-800, Roland Alpha Juno (or the HS-10 version), Ensoniq ESQ-1, Kawai K3, Korg DW-6000 and DW-8000, Sequential Circuits Six Trak, Akai AX-60 and AX-80, Oberheim Matrix 6r and Matrix 1000
I really wonder if this isn't a vinyl disc vs 192kHz download argument. The specs are on the side of the download, but the errors common to vinyl records are the kind of errors the physiology of hearing (as well as habit/custom) leads us to like.... The signal to noise level in any of the early synths is usually awful, but we're used to noisy signals, and the kind of noise isn't irksome and may even be perceived as pleasant.
As someone with a minilogue XD, I really believe them being more digital gives them a different quality. I wouldn't say it's better, it's definitely unique and has it's place, but I don't always want it to be the driving sound of my songs. Also you are totally right about the effects on them. They were nice when I was playing the synth with headphones but when I started recording they stopped being useful quickly compared to how easy it was to add something better outside of the synth.
i just skipped out on a minilogue XD and bought one of these instead 😬 has the moog filter mod. scored it for 400USD. hopefully i didn’t make a mistake here 🙏
It was my first expander & I think one of the first to be made? Soon gonna treat it to some nice wooden ends made buy a guy on Ebay ( Already got ones from him for my JP8080). It made a surprising contrast to the only Midi keyboard I had then, my Juno 106 (Now has Kiwi btw). I haven't got the EX out for years tbh but I seem to remember the flutes amongst other things had a unique flavour. Might even have it modded by circuitbenders? Lovely little synth.
Believe it or not but I have an EX 800 that belonged to the daft punk. Never used it. piece of collection...now that I've heard this demo I might turn it on :)
@@tritonrecordings I can imagine there's room for improvement. I assume Eiffel 65 would have been using mostly(?) late 90's plugins in a DAW? I guess I should read up on the gear they actually used, but whatever it was they made it work.
I bought one of this in a perfect shape for 250euros 2years ago (a bit expensive but well..I fell in love with it, seriously); now it has a hawk800 in it, and that's my favourite synth ^^ With a friend, we made tracks with this and the minilogue, the 2 complete each other perfectly ;) but yeah minilogue is awesome :p yet the 2 sound different ; I watch your video because I'm filling my 4banks of presets with new ones so I needed some examples ;) you are right, programation is difficult but with dozen of hours of experience it is actually quite easy if you know what you want ^^ lol ; cheers for making a great video for the lovely POLY/EX 800
I got one and I've been stuck with it. There really is no free editor software? Obviously the potential is there, though after Juno-106 the single filter thing is not... my thing :) I've sold Juno long time ago, mainly because I hadn't used it for years, I wanted it to have better home. I didn't have room for gear, but now I do. So, I'm looking for inspiration with EX-800. It can give a lot, obviously. Thanks for this one!
@@NinoJoel but do you know how you get them back? I bought mine from a guy who programmed 50 crappy organs on it and just went with that as the presets.
The Poly/EX-800's definitely don't have delay. Personally I'm more prone to use a delay plug-in, pedal, or rack unit so I'm okay with it not being built in.
Fantastic analog synth. Sounds amazing. Great demo.

Agreed minilogue is my hands down favorite poly i have out of the 6 or so I have. So quick to get where you wanna go and sounds dope!

Interesting. I have a Poly 800 mk2, and I just found out this version existed.
Are these the factory patches?
Is that Dub in Life at 3:08? I really thought I was the only one who thought that Europop was a surprisingly good album.
It WAS a good album! The mixing engineer in me really wants to fatten up the low end on it though...especially Dub in Life.

The EX-800 doesn't have the 800 Mk 2's delay fx, does it? I've been debating between trying to find one of those or going for a full-sized Mk 2.

That first patch is both synths playing, right?
No, just the EX-800.
O wow cool.
Nice one.
Reminds me of Dam Funk’s ‘Garret’ project..

The Korg EX-800 sound a bit like my King Korg Actually, or rather the opposite. I Am suprised of how large it sounds!

Most authentic sounding hybrid Korg.
Its NOT hybrid. Its DCO Digital Control Analog Oscillator
@@Producer4Realz It's not DCO like in other Korg or Roland synths, it's weird digital combo.
