- On a very special day, the Sri Lankan new year, a local family in Mirissa look after me and take me in for the day experiencing a special kind of hospitality. Kansu shows me around his ancestral home in the rural jungle area away from the coast where everything imaginable grows and is ready to be eaten. At his family home the fireworks go off all day as the coconut milk boils and we enter the new year eating all sorts of tasty home made Sri Lankan food.

Here are some English names, Kankun(fish food)=Water Spinach, Papadam(Crispy one)=type of flour, Mung kevum(Sweet one with crispy outside) - Made from mung beans(Type of green seed). , Ambarella(Item from garden for lunch)=Golden apples

Sri Lankan people are really kind and pure hearted.That's why Sri Lankan hospitality is so lovely than in any country.All cultures neither are not to inspire anyone nor to say that we have beautiful cultures.All of us live together and we have cultures and religions only to make a good society.Not only to celebrate or to show everyone.As a Sri Lankan I'm truly proud of that. I experience that as a Sri Lankan who is living here even. In astrology, the sun follows the ecliptic. The ecliptic is divided into twelve sections called rashis, travelling eastward from Mesha. The rashi names are similar to those in the West, indicating a common Sumerian origin.
The first day of the month is when the sun enters each rashi before nightfall. If the sun enters a rashi after sunset but before sunrise, the following day is the first of the month (there are minor differences). The days are then labelled 1, 2, 3... until the next month's first.
So we get 12 months of 29-32 days. This fluctuation in length happens due to the earth's elliptical orbit around the sun and the transit point falling before or after sunrise. Months are named from the rashi that the sun travels in that month.
The solar New Year begins on the first of Mesha. On the Gregorian calendar, it falls around April 13 or 14.

@@vijayafernando1based on your shadow I guess. If no shadow it means it’s 12 noon. Likewise they decided time based on the angle of the shadow as per my knowledge.

He's a good man working hard for his family. That shirt turned out to be a vibe, inspired me to get a couple more. Also pulling money out of the breast pocket like the uncles do makes me feel like even more of a man.

According to Sinhalese astrology, New Year begins when the sun moves from Meena Rashiya (the house of Pisces) to Mesha Rashiya (the house of Aries). It also marks the end of the harvest season and of spring. And that happens on April 14. That's why it's the new year day.

Sinhala and hindu new year is mainly a traditional and cultural festival celebrate in sri lanka People celebrate the transition of the sun from the house of pieces to house of aries during 13th and 14th of April. They believe this is a new begining of the year. During the neutral time they visit the temples and avoid from doing there day today activities to start fresh from the new year. During ospicious time they start the fresh year by lighting the herth and eating and starting there usual works.

Mung Kawum is made with a mixer of green gram powder, rice flour, and Jaggery or kitul honey covered with rice flour batter then deep fry using coconut oil.

Why do Sri Lankans have a different New Year? The answer is that before the Portuguese and then the Dutch conquered the maritime provinces of Sri Lanka from the 16th century on and finally the British conquered the entire island and introduced the Christian calendar Sri Lankans had their own calendar based on astronomy and astrology. According to their historical calendar the New Year falls on a day in mud April according to the movement of the stars. In that full moon days are considered as holy days by Buddhists and are holidays just as Sundays are for Christians.
