- Case control and cohort studies are examples of epidemiological studies used in public health to understand the relationship between exposures and outcomes. Epidemiology is about the distribution of disease and the causes of disease and the relationship between them. Epidemiological studies can be used to provide evidence for public health and medical interventions. These are examples of observational studies. They differ from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in that there is no deliberate intervention. RCTs are an excellent way of controlling for confounding.
