I'm an engineer myself and the lack of critical questions from journalists to Elon Musk has infuriated me for years! So thanks for educating me on that ^^ My take on why he feels the need to show that he's the best : When you get accustomed to being the best, you hate being mediocre (mediocre as in median, medium, not bad but not good) Early in my scholarship, I was way better than anyone else, due to understanding things quickly, and having a really good memory and logical way of thinking. That made me one of the best in class. That lasted a bunch of years, and i got accustomed to it. When my grades started dropping, i found that i hated not being good, i despised being mediocre. Still today, i always fear of picking up a new hobby, because i will be bad at it first, and i truly hate this feeling. For Elon, he maybe never was really on the top, but he bought and lied his way through it, and now he's on the top of the economical world. Once you get accustomed to the top, you hate showing that you suck. For me, he feels the need to buy his way through the game and expose himself, just because he does not want to show himself being bad at something, because he doesn't like that feeling. It's a character issue, LID. It's the reason we teach our kids the lesson E Musk's parents neglected to teach him: be honest. If he is willing to lie about something so trivial to pad his ego, then he is far more likely to lie about big, important things.
Why is it important to let people know how easily and casually he lies? Because he controls one of the most influential media platforms in the world. He has the power to lie at scale, and spread those lies--powered by algorithms--around the globe.

It kind of tells a tale of what kind of person he is. This is not the only thing he's faked. He is a fake engineer, a fake inventor, pretty much fake everything. He is an investor, that's it. And a good marketer, I'll give him that too. But also ultimately a con man.
