An uncle that served in Viet Nam once told me that the most reassuring sound he ever heard was the thump thump thump of a jolly green giant coming to get him and his platoon that had been shot up and holed up in a swamp. The crew dropped into a hole in the jungle and plucked them out with no hesitation. RIP uncle John B.
both engine gearboxes feed into a single combining transmission (C-box) in the aft pylon. from there, power is transfered via interconnected driveshafts to the forward and rear transmissions. as long as the rotors are phased correctly during maintenance, there is nothing to worry about unless something breaks. Needless to say, it's a big concern if you get a C-Box chip light, especially when your about 60 miles off the coast.
I have been working as a Chinook flight engineer for more than 10 years in Korea, and the transmission chip caution light comes on more than other models. However, when actually removing the chip detector and examining the shape of the chip, it is all normal wear. He makes the people who operate it tiring, but he is a reliable guy. :)
I crewed an a model in 180 avn co in the early 70's. went to flight school in 1976, in 1977 went to ft Rucker to learn how to fly a ch47, from then till 1986 I was lucky enough to fly a B model and a c model and a brand new D model I went to the boing factory and flew it back to ft sill ok I was lucky enough to make 2 of these trips. The CHinook is the best helicopter ever built
A chinook can lift 20.000lb or 9000kilos it's main role is heavy lift and support can be armed with two mini guns and 0.50 calibre machine gun for close support
Are the drive shafts (or whatever it uses) tied together for both rotors? It seems like they move in tandem, which would make sense being that it would really mess up the flight if one rotor lost it's engine power, it would go all wonky I would think if they didn't have them physically linked to move the same speed.
Yes they are - the T55 engines drive a transmission at their front ends. The output is slightly reduced and sent to the combining transmission in the front of the aft pylon. That output is synced and sent fore and aft to the main transmissions which reduce speed to flight and drive the rotorheads and swashplates.. The -47 (like the Navy -46) is one of the few aircraft that can have a mid-air collision with itslef (if the combo box goes wonky). However, they were the ones I was able to sleep on the most often during my career.
147th Assault Support Helicopter Company, Vung Tau, Vietnam March 23, 1968, March 23, 1969, was 19 years old when I arrived, worked in flight operations, call sign "Hillclimbers", slinging 155 and 105 howitzer, n various military equipment for 9th Infantry Div., 25th Infantry Div, 1st Infantry Div. N ARVN troops, you can see their webpage at 147th Ashc.org , 3 years in, yea, miss it a lot Todd Scheuerman
This aircraft was an old A model Chinook (7th to come off the production line) and was accepted by the U.S. Army on January 9th 1963 making it the oldest flyable Chinook based on acceptance dates. In 1991 this aircraft was sent to the Boeing factory in Philadelphia PA to be converted to a D model and was accepted in September of 1992. I was told this year that this aircraft will be going to a museum in the very near future. Museum of Flight maybe? well see.
Haha, yeah, sorry about the trash... You'd be surprised how fast a bottle picks up speed as soon as it gets outside the rotor disk... Also, that tail number is 91-00261. Oldest flying airframe in the fleet.
Yeah - a lot of the B's and Super C's went on back to Vertol and the Depot for refit to D model standard. Love how greasy the aft pylon is. Fell off a few of those. But, that's the sign she's being cared for. If she ain't leaking hydro - something's wrong.
That's why I used to wear ear plugs and ear phones before it was a thing. I still have good hearing; but, man, you couldn't hear yourself think if one of the ear phone cups came off your ear.
+X Z Seng It's is a standard flight helmet (so he can communicate with the pilots and in combat with the crew chief and gunner) He is the flight engineer...ye loadmaster is one of his duties but he has many duties like hooking up sling loads and releasing them at the LZ....and informing the pilots off the height of the external load during take off and landing. I had over 1500 hours as a flight engineer in Vietnam.
+Derick Worley Correct, they are synced so that when the Fwd blade is Fwd the Aft blade is also Fwd facing (More or less) but if a sync shaft failed you've got more to worry about :-/
Living in the midlands we get the odd one flying over at quite an height...that distant thump/whop, whop......this fifty year old man still drops his knife and fork to go into the garden ...searching the sky.....my neighbours washing their little shiny cars don't even bother looking up...their loss...all REAL MEN drop their knives and forks...what say yee..
I've flown in them a bunch and skinned plenty of knuckles wrenching on them. Active then guard while also working for a contractor that specializes in cutting edge but most are single seat so you never fly.... I was on military leave from there wrenching on CH47's when I got wounded, eventually I ended up getting surgery at Ft Lewis.. I'm too old to go back to ramp surfing but after being there you can bet your ass I'm leaving CA for rural WA.
had the pleasure of flying in one of these. one of the sweetest sounds any helicopter can make, period.
ahhhh the sweet sound of the APU
3:28 the prop blades seem to be timed not to touch each other before the blades straighten out!
Saw one of these beauties fly over Luton, England yesterday. Love the unique sound!
Fukin bad ass love them things. The sound of any chopper makes me stop and look for it no matter what.
05:05 - Ahhwww, screw it.
I piloted Chinooks in Nam. Most of our startups were a tad faster than this. Especially if someone was shooting at us.😁
I was just thinking the same thing. I don't remember startups taking this long; except, maybe during test flights.
Thank u for your service man
@@Skelevon_gaming i doubt there were Female pilots in nam
Thank you for your service Sir.

Love the chinook bad ass helicopter
Man, I miss that sound!
My old man used to service the at 447 Sqn in the Canadian Forces. Such a nice sound at they start up.
+Bobbie Bees they remusterd under 450 sqn in Pet, working towards this dream job now!

So this is the bastard that keeps setting off my car alarms, what a fucking magnificent beast
Chinooks are awesome
flew with the marines for a day during the cuban boat lift in this beast..Out to sea..land on ship..pick up cubans..drop off at base...Fun day!
Go 3:20 for Twin Rotor Startup
I saw one of these fly over my house not long ago . Quite the sight!

Wow thanks for the detailed info!
95TurboSol First Army aircraft I ever worked on - have some good memories. Glad to share a few.
NorthForkFisherman How did you sleep in such a loud environment?!
dumb as rox Confidence. It was my bird and I always feel great about the work I've done.

I remember when A models were the oldest in the fleet in 1976

Steven Stretch I don't know the date yet but this one is going to the museum of flight to be placed on display.
It's official. this aircraft will be inducted in the museum of flight November 6th 2016. I'm sure there will be a big ceremony planned for it.
February 2020, it’s finally on display
Turbine startup begins at 3:20
This is the model version of the bird that I worked on. Most likely the D or E model.
seis minutos de video al pedo y nos quedamos sin el despegue.!! Sos un salame.!!!
i have been in one at ft lewis it was cool but i dont think it was the oldest one
Just a curious question could one of the blades misalign and break the others causing the helicopter to crash? They look extremely close and long
Not unless the driveshaft between the rotors failed. They're geared to never actually overlap each other.
Impressive!
ty sir just wondering two rotors getting the down force just right to spin both got me thinking about if it was possible or not.
Haha, yeah, sorry about the trash... You'd be surprised how fast a bottle picks up speed as soon as it gets outside the rotor disk... Also, that tail number is 91-00261. Oldest flying airframe in the fleet.
not airframe.
Cleared for startup
Same basic model since entering service during the Vietnam war.
Sturdy, sturdy, sturdy...

That's a hard fall, my friend. Been there, done that!
jonnie rotten And when you're that young and dumb, you BOUNCE! LOL
Also, is it part of the helmet or a separate piece
3:24 to skip the idle part
Awesome 👍🏾👍🏾

I meant oldest flying airframe in the Chinook fleet. Sorry
Flown in those back on active duty, man those things were loud inside.
Tim Nelson that's why we all have crap hearing these days that and rifle fire quickest way to send you deaf c130 just as load before jump
That's why I used to wear ear plugs and ear phones before it was a thing. I still have good hearing; but, man, you couldn't hear yourself think if one of the ear phone cups came off your ear.
Sweet seen one today
5:06 I'll get it later lol
Somebody lost their grocery list. Wife's gonna be pissed.
dammit Carl don't throw your water bottles out the back
I think I saw one of these flying high over my apartment.
I can't see how the blades keep from hitting honestly?
They are syncronised
They should make a quintuple rotor chinook
what sort of helmet is that dude at the back wearing? Hes also a loadmaster am i right?
+X Z Seng

+Al Mcallister wow, interesting!
what if the sync gets disturbed and blades run into each other?
The blade will strike the cabin or another blade.
Ok but to see it from this angle it looks like they pass within inches of eachother
Rescue Heroes
the sound is cool! turn up your volume and bash your ears
Exactly what's the job of the crew member standing outside the chopper? What's he checking?
we check for anomalies during start up specifically fire and hydraulic leaks.
Thanks!
Chinook...the only helicopter where an oil leak is considered a good thing....no leak = no oil
...*does anyone know how much tons can lift and carry a chinook chopper?...thanks*
tammy brown Checked Wiki, Looks like about 8000 Lbs. so 4 Tons
***** ...*wow¡¡...thanks for ur kind reply...*
tammy brown The heaviest I ever lifted with it is a 5 ton army vehicle and a 2000 gallon bucket full of water which is around 18,000 pounds.
Steven Stretch ...*wow...now dats heavy...thanks 4 ur comment*
Peter Wilson ...*thank u 4 ur kind reply*
Wow just the idead of how those rotors have to be synced perfectly or snap boom bang. How old exactly was this helicopter anyways
+Jacob Schwertfeger One way the rotors get around it is by the rear rotor being higher than the front so they don't hit each other.
+SonicOverlordUK this is incorrect. they are meshed rotor systems. if a drive shaft breaks the rotors can and will hit each other.
+Derick Worley Correct, they are synced so that when the Fwd blade is Fwd the Aft blade is also Fwd facing (More or less) but if a sync shaft failed you've got more to worry about :-/
i just got one questionm can this chopper autorotate
i heard it couldn't but just want to clear this up

We called them Shit Hooks. Inter-mashing rotor blades
We called them Shit Hooks as well
Did a small rodent scape the chinook at 5:00 ?
+nemodot: It looked like an empty soda can to me or some other kind of pogie bait crews were known to secret away
That looks like Meridian Mississippi
06:11 random plane lands in the background xD
Chris Rossi it is an airport
Where was this filmed at?
At the museum of flight in Seattle.

Why spend 30+ million on this helicopter when you can buy an Mi-26 for 10-15 million?
+Daniel Martinez you think that mi-26 and chinook are same? lol. And ofc, why would you pay to non-friendly country?
Different purpose, you're like saying why would you buy a ford explorer when you can buy a honda civic for a fraction of the price.
When this happens you must buy the staff also from Russia))). It would sound like "the crew with russian screw")).
Back in the day, (!970), the price of one ran $2 million. How times have changed.
1 year update. I still love seeing it fly everyday. For those that know nothing about it, you would be amazed at what it can do. chinook366
