  • What kinds of stories should we be telling? One classic narrative we all know is the classic rags-to-riches story. A disenfranchised protagonist overcomes all odds to rise above their means. Sound familiar? Unfortunately, this type of narrative actually reinforces marginalization by painting it as the normative experience. Preying upon our implicit biases, these stories do more harm than good. Alexis McGill Johnson, Executive Director and cofounder of the Perception Institute, believes that in order to overcome implicit bias we need to look at the science of bias.

This is an excellent exploration of unintentional, hidden biases and how well-meaning people can accidentally perpetuate stereotypes, even though they're trying to be fair. Conversations about prejudice and representation can easily break down when people are generally unaware of implicit bias and the role it plays. Thank you for this video! We need more like it.
