"Every Opportunity" Deconstructed

- Every Opportunity is a wonderful video for schools to see the difference between a school in crisis based survival mode versus one that puts student into learning brain through the foundation of relationships and teaching social emotional and neurodevelopmental tasks. I show the video and break down what I think about it.

Anyone that works in the school system needs to have a positive attitude. It affects everyone.
yup. But the truth is that we all fall into negativity at some point in time. The trick for me is whether we can understand the wave of negativity for what it needs to be, forgive ourselves, and metabolize the negativity enough so that it can go away again.
I would much prefer the second version of schools, and then what I would like even more is for school attendance to no longer be compulsory. I think that's when you would really know that you're responding to people's needs, when you don't have to force them to attend anymore. John Holt talks about this in his book How Children Fail.
And from my experience in school and as a caregiver in schools and summer camps, is that a lot of forcing people and leaving people behind is when you put children into these crowd-control situations where theres one maybe 2 people vastly outnumbered by the kids theyre supposed to serve. You cant offer choice or freedom that way, because every minute kids could "do some crap" and you dont have the time and attention to handle that. Nor help kids with their difficult emotions. Or coach kids with the things that would really advance their learning.
Its just herding sheep.
@@violettaschmieder2096 You want a calmer setting where children can feel relaxed, if I understand correctly, so that they may then have the opportunity to benefit from what you want to give them. I agree this would be a big improvement. However, John Holt is talking about a whole different level. Since you are interested in the well being of children, I suggest you read his book. I searched for "john holt how children fail pdf" right now and found it.

Can you make a similar video for parents? The recent virtual learning has opened my eyes to how parents destroy kids self esteem before they even come to school. Most teachers I know are positive and affirming.

I've just watched about 2 minutes of this video and it is so heart-breaking to watch the boy's sad face and all the people who mistreated the boy. For me, all those people were my parents and my brother and that heart breaking behaviors happened in the family while growing up. No wonder why I would think that maybe other's negative reactions to me were about me, how I acted wrong and made them act that way. It feels like I carry some kind of electric swich in me that makes people get mad at me just being with them.
My son is 20 and his schools (all of them) were the first kind. Zero tolerance and punishment. They broke his spirit. It broke my heart. Please send this to all schools. They really need to be better.

Needs a more grabbing title so that school teachers all around the world would find it easily when searching youtube. Parents ought to demand some online, in school cameras so they can see what sort of atmosphere exists at their child's school.

You are showing things on it soon I have you. We are constantly on slot with disrespect and miss behavior at my school. I try to reach out to them and I find that sometimes it actually works against me. You need to see things from other perspectives. To say the kids are the victims here do you have a known things the way I know . I do try to talk to them in a calm and tender matter though. I do find that they do respond most of them do respond when I talk to them kindly that is true

Education for teacher how to behave around children.
I know the pressure and fear put on children and youth by the schoolsystem very well. I was in 6 different schools and only met one really good teacher, who was able to switch from what seemed to me like an authoritarian, demanding demeanor to a kind and caring attitude that was more likely to calm me, when he saw that I was just starring at him distrustfully. It makes me happy to see that there are still people who care:) Studying social work, I hope to be able to do the same some day. Thank you!
I get it now. Yeah, funding stuff like this seems so obvious and there are some cool programs out there for social emotional development and some school systems are focusing on it. But, we just don't put our money where our values are in this society. Heck in Korea it's prestigious to be a teacher and you get paid well for it too. We in the US just don't.
@@JacobHamPhD yeah but in korea the whole system is built against the kids even more. Plus general Hierarchy and age hierachy lead to more abuse of power, and isnt it only a very short time ago that teachers were allowed to hit children?
Whenever i see kdrama and some abusive punishment that doesnt get adressed at all later on i get so angry.
I've had so many horrific teachers in school and university. They ought to watch something like this. They behave like they hate every single student and have no patience, compassion, understanding or anything. They bark orders, reprimend, and bark again.
Yup, I know. The good news is that some teachers are watching this and some schools are sharing. We can't reach everyone but we can reach the ones who want to get better and that's what keeps me motivated.
