  • Here is something you don't see every day! This was once a beautiful and expensive Krieghoff Teck combination gun. This gun would have been an amazing piece for any firearms collection. Unfortunately, this Krieghoff suffered some very bad times and needs dramatic restoration. Depending on how you look at it, this is either a huge mess or an amazing opportunity for a gun collector. For pennies on the dollar I have become the "proud owner" of this "masterpiece". Now, the big question: Can I restore it to it's original splendor or does it take up residency at the local dump? Join me as we explore the possibilities. Thanks for watching, and don't forget to follow the links below to enjoy more USOG.

Hey Matt, this is a scenario I am familiar with. I was presented with an Austrian rifle/ shotgun side × side under lever in the same calibers and two Belgian side × sides, one in 20ga one in 12, both the same 9.3mmR as yours. Both were exposed hammers with removable side locks. These three had been through a major flood on a farm, were burried under mud for a long time and then one placed butt down on the ground and the other two laid on their left sides on a damp surface for probably the better part of 60 years, in the same barn. All 3 were missing forend wood and hangers. The under levers buttstock would disintegrate to powder from its steel engraved butt plate to the middle of its cheek piece, about 5", if touched. The 20ga had a split from the toe going forward about 4" and was about 3/16" wide. The barells were caked full of a tan colored silt. And everything was coated in a fine rust. I was able to find 50% of the bluing intact under the surface rust. This was not something I really wanted to get tied down with at this point in my life , but I couldn't say no. Each one took about a year of hard work to restore. It was a lot of effort and work, making new springs, firing pins, sights, etc. Wood repair was extensive including finding a 6" × 2" piece of walnut to match the grain of the under lever and using threaded rod epoxied into the stock to splice the new piece onto. Then shape and contour to match and inlet and fit the curved and overhanging steel butt plate. But NONE of this compared to the hassle, effort and time it took to devise a solution to the forend hangers, wood and their latches and checkering that all had to be constructed by hand . If my arthritis was not hurting when I started, it was crippling when I finished. I even resorted to making parts from wood, fitted them perfectly and then make moulds of them to cast the parts. All this without even knowing what the originals looked like. But when finished it was a very gratifying feeling to see these old gals back for another 100 or more years of life. Besides all the issues mentioned above, all of the surfaces that were in contact with whatever they were placed on had extensive pitting. Not something beyond a certain point that can be removed. So an alternative had to be worked out, fortunately their are tricks of the trade that help accomplish this.
When dealing with any firearm that has been in a fire or subjected to high heat one must proceed with caution. I see that you have done that. As a general rule if the heat was hot enough to char the wood, discolor the metal or melt silver solder, it's time to have the entire firearm evaluated for safety. It may save you much trouble and headaches to check the following. You have found evidence of melted solder already. It should be determined how the barells are installed to the monobloc. If they are soldered in, which is very common, they need to be checked and inspected. If the connection is not secure it is an issue for sure . If the solder had softened and hardened again the regulation of the barells may no longer be correct and point of aim will be off. Unfortunately, this is something way, way beyond the skill level of even an excellent gunsmith. Very few outside of the factory have the skill, tooling and expertise to do this. So I would hope it isn't an issue or the barells were screwed into the monobloc receiver. You certainly have the right idea for a way to restock the gun. But if I may, before you start any of the time consuming fitting and get all dirty with Prussian Blue or it's modern equivalent, make sure the thru hole for the stock bolt is compatible with and aligns with the receivers mounting hole. This should be done first to ensure it is compatible and will have the correct drop angle. We both know this is one of those things that seems simple enough, but is so much more complicated than one could imagine. Good luck, and all the best. Let me know how it's going with this one. Be safe and stay healthy.

The 12 Guage was true cylinder and loaded with BrenneK (solids ) which are still available, ps I lived in Germany and my son had dual nationality, The local Jaegar club had a Shooting Festival in which everyone had a great time with beer and Schnitzel and an awful hangover for 3 days, They enjoyed their shooting and had very strict firearms customs and dress codes.

Very interesting video, absolutely beautiful gun.
Would there be an option of stabilising the wooden stock with some sort of resin and build up areas of damage or loss. The fore stock could be treated the same way to have continuity of colour and finish. You are most likely aware of this but some of the modern powder coating techniques produce exceptionally good authentic finishes while preserving fine engraving and such like.
I have used double rifles both o/u and s/s in that particular rifle calibre. In the heat of the hunt they are quite tame, but not particularly nice to bench shoot for zeroing. Classic driven hunt calibre as is the 12 gauge. In certain parts of Europe heavy shot is permitted for Roe deer in heavy cover or shooting boar at short range in built up areas.
Best of luck with the project and I am looking forward to the finished gun and seeing it shoot again.

no, the bar connected to to the pop up sight is usually hidden within the elongated sight rail (i dont know the english word so i use the most basic traslation from german) but Bockbüchsflinten like these usually have a flip up sight which have to be be flipped by hand

I’m a sucker too for rough guns that were beautiful but now need work ...and have a closet full of them that I will never get around to doing anything with !
Hard to see just how bad the stock is but I would really try to save it if at possible, the horn trigger guard of course would have to be replaced with a steel one.
You mentioned the difficulty of getting the screws out, one thing I have found that works well is to use a carpenter brace, ( hand drill) small 6 inch throw is best , to hold the screwdriver bit and use it to remove the screw. Gives you good torque while allowing you to keep pressure into the slot.
No doubt about it LOTS of work needs to be done with this gun but on the bright side lots of work doesn’t need to be done too...imagine if it didn’t have the forearm iron
Looking forward to seeing the completed job

You could try immersing the action in a bucket of oil heavily diluted with petrol and just leave it to soak for a few days also, a good way to free things off, without using Flame as a heat source is to use Boiling Water. Both methods have worked for me in the past when I have had stubborn parts that are hard to get moving smoothly. Would love to see the completed result maybe at the Range.

Very cool firearm! Would be nice to see new wood on it. Very unique with beautiful engraving. Reminds me of an old side by side 12 guage that I have. Minnesota Arms, St. Paul. serial number 1, twisted steel barrels with side locks. Matching numbers on all three pieces, the reciever, barrels and forearm hardware. No wood on it. My dad used the shotgun to hunt rabbits in the 40's. Never seen or heard of another shotgun like it so could be a one of a kind. Not a shooter.

Get in Contact with Krieghoff ( www.krieghoff.de// ) and pass them the Serial Number of the Gun and they will be able to tell you what Year of Production it is... "Böhler Blitz Stahl" by the Way is one of the best Steels for Barrels you can get. I own a "Ferlach" 16/70 cal which is made of it. Maybe Krieghoff can tell you also about the 1st Owner or if they made someting special on the Stock.. The Caliber of 9.3x74R is a cartridge used mostly for Mountain-Hunting. Means it was used probably in the Alps of Germany or Switzerland. For ex. 9.3 is the stanard Caliber of Swiss Canton Glarus... if I can help you to get in Contact with Krieghoff here in Europe I`ll be pleased (I am from Switzerland) Let me know if I can help getting more Info about the Gun if you want..

Any firearm that shoots is worth restoring. I would replace the rib and seek out a picture of this rifle so you can see the sight plus the shapes for the forend with stock. knowing your skill and expertise I bet it will live again to put game on the table.

It looks like you have a very good project. It says special steel on the rifle and I thought that at one time I either read somwhere or heard it somewhere that the steel is either a very high grade chrome alloy or nickel alloy steel which would make sense. I don't know if these guns were every blued or if there was some kind of finish it was some kind of special coating that was on the steel. At any rate the end cap or end tie is going to have to be made in order to keep each barrel truely parallel to each other and the piece that you slid off of the barrel is the central isolator and goes right where it has the discoloration marking. That should help when makung the end piece. I would suggest maybe finding a used or even new top railing from a good shotgun. You can fit it at whatever height you would want it then. I have made a few custom stocks when I have personalized old guns that were sold for hardly nothing and have made beautiful custm guns out of what people would say was junk. I have a beautiful custom made dropping block .303 British and an old flip up breechloader. It took me many hours to take a rough block of Walnut to make the stocks but they came out great. Anyway, good luck with your project.

From this side of the pond (EU) it sure looks like a wall hanger. On German auction sites the price for an used but well taken care of Krieghoff Teck is approximately 2.500 Euro (no scope included). If the metal was exposed to heat, can you be sure it’s safe?

Greetings I have one question, remote to subject, 9,3x74r has bit unusual shape , did it appear in different calibres? I thing I saw once similar, but smaller maybe 6mm but i havent been able to find any information of it. Anyway, best of luck with your projects.

Please dip the action and lower portion of the Barrels where the Ejectors are in a bucket of Petrol /Gasoline whatever for a whole night.. It is better than any Company cleaning oil or solution.. It will not damage the bluing.. The most stubborn grease or grime in the working parts and rust will come out.. 🙂👍

For the stock work with modern CNC router, you can scan the stock in 3D and replicate in a nice piece of walnut, most people here in the USAcharge $150.00 Dollars to duplicate a rifle stock + the wood. The rifle barrels can be restored with Belgium rust blue or the modern black chrome. If the rifle worth $15.000 it worth to expend
    $1 200.00

USOG Thanks for the reply, it is appreciated. I have had a Drilling Ferlach for about 35 years, is 16x16 / 9.3x74R that I use to hunt in the Amazon rainforest of Venezuela. I have it with a Kahles low power scope. It is a beautiful weapon of excellent quality, but very heavy, Recently I changed it for another Drilling Sauer and sohn 16x16 / 30-06 and it is much more compact and lightweight. Thanks for the great and detailed videos and your opinion. Regards.

I suggest that you fit one of those stocks using a filler or even bondo, looks won't matter. Use that stock as a master and have a better quality stock turned. I have several walnut blanks that I would let go for a fair price. That's my two cents worth. Thanks for the video.
