  • Singing is an activity, hobby, passion, and profession that has been around forever (almost literally). Because of its long history, there are many myths that have evolved around the act of singing.
    Singeo coach Lisa Witt discusses a few popular singing myths (and facts) in this video.
    Our singing voice, actually, the human voice in general, is such an amazing organ, and the more we learn and know about it the better we will be able to take care of it.

    I feel like this was such a relief to hear this ...I sing but felt I wasn’t doing it right because I couldn’t for the life of me figure out this diaphragm singing, and my mind came up with all sorts of stories...watching this I feel like oh ya ....I can get better with you as the teacher. You’re great, Lisa. I so appreciate your style. Thank you!

    The whole reason I gave up singing was they kept telling me to sing from my diaphragm and it felt terrible 😫. Now I feel I might try again.

    As a choral singer I just want to elaborate on the use of the diaphragm. (you knew somebody would didn't you?!😂 You know I'm a friend though, right?🤗 )
    Its just because I was so astounded when I was taught how to be aware of 'breathing from the diaphram' that I love to pass it on whenever I can!
    You're right, we do all know how to breathe but what I hadn't realised was that we're all taught, (especially women) in an effort to look slimmer, to hold in our tummies. This causes us to breathe in an unnatural way.
    Once you put your hand over your tummy relax your shoulders and breathe deeply you'll feel your diaphram relax and your tummy grow/stick out in a most 'undignified' way so make sure to wear an elastic waistband.😄
    I spent many weeks 'teaching' my body to relax and breathe naturally in this way, actually by practicing with a hand on my tummy in bed, deep breathing before I went to sleep.
    Now I can sing long lines which before I could only sing all the way through by taking a cheeky 'sniff' breath.
    Also I *do* now automatically breathe naturally all the time and feel healthier for it, along with drinking a lot more water than you'd think you need.
    So very sad not to have been able to sing with my pals for more than a year now, really hope we can start again soon though we might have to wait until September when we've all been fully vaccinated... 😔
    You're helping to keep me cheerful with your lovely musical teachings, so, many thanks for all your work.🎶🙏

    My former singing teacher talked about singing from the diaphragm and many singing teachers talk about head voice. If these are misconceptions, why are so many teachers getting thei pupils to follow such rules?

    • @SingeoOfficial
      @SingeoOfficial  3 года назад +1

      Teaching singing is challenging because the voice is INSIDE of us... SO, phrases and words are used to try and help put words to a sensation or feeling in hopes that naming a sensation or feeling will help us to perform a certain action or repeat something that worked. These words get passed on and used and while they aren't always super correct, the most important thing is that the singer is able to sing with balance :)

    Question: what does "vocal rest" really mean and how is it beneficial to the voice?

    • @SingeoOfficial
      @SingeoOfficial  3 года назад +6

      Hi April! Great question. Vocal rest, if you were to do it "perfectly" would be to not use your voice whatsoever. No talking, singing, or especially, no whispering. Nothing. But because that is nearly impossible for most people, using your voice as little as possible, preferably with long breaks of silence between use, is best. On top of not using your voice, you should also be resting your body and mind as well. Your voice is an organ, it's part of your body. If your voice is strained or tired sounding... it's time to take a long nap. Finally, drink lots of water... stay hydrated. :)

    Quick question Lisa. Over the years I’ve played various instruments, keyboard, guitar, bass and now an avid drummer, (and long-standing Drumeo member). Practicing with all of these instruments can be problematic regarding noise but using electric guitars, keyboards, drums etc you can continue without disturbing others. Is it possible to practice singing quietly? Initially to protect other people’s ears from my pitchy, strained attempts at Living on a Prayer but then later on, just so that I’m not annoying everyone? 🤔

    • @SingeoOfficial

      YES! I suggest you try singing through a straw (video on that coming soon!) OR singing the bubble exercise (see our video "the most important vocal exercise") to help you practice developing confidence on the sounds without being super loud!

    Learning piano is something I've always wanted to do but never knew where to start, I recently decided to finally dedicate some effort into learning how play piano because I thought I could not sing but I still want to create music somehow.
    I've been binge watching as many piano lessons as I could from pianote and somehow stumbled on to this channel and I guess what I'm getting at is this question which has always stopped me from trying to learn how to sing. Can I sing if I am a male who's voice changed extremely low after hitting puberty a few years ago? Would it be possible to hit the high notes I've always wanted to with voice training? Also is there a way I can sing smoothly with my low coarse voice?
    Thanks for reading my story and I would really appreciate a reply or a tutorial on how to sing higher if its even possible.

    • @SingeoOfficial
      @SingeoOfficial  3 года назад +1

      Hey!! YES you can learn to sing smoothly , even with a lower voice. While the higher notes might feel different now, with exercise and training you will get there! For now, I suggest you check out our video on the bubble exercise (The most important vocal exercise) to help you get started!

    Why does it feel like there's a break at the transition between my chest and head voice? And why does that break move a little depending on how I feel (Tired, congested, warmed up)?

    • @SingeoOfficial
      @SingeoOfficial  3 года назад

      Totally normal!!!! Most of us experience that actually! Short answer is that as you move from chest voice to head voice the muscles that need to be engaged have to corporate for a smooth hand over and they don't always want to cooperate!! That is where the term bridge comes from because we work on "bridging" these transitions! A great way to help with this is to practice singing through a straw or using the bubble exercise as a warm up. You can do vocal slides or long arpeggio scales to help you move through your range. We will have more videos on this soon!!! -Lisa

    Great video Lisa; When I try to sing, I don't know what is happening, but most of the time I have to yawn, and that is not what is supposed to be. What do I do wrong ?

    • @SingeoOfficial
      @SingeoOfficial  3 года назад +1

      NORMAL! When you sing you use your breath differently than when you speak and the body yawns as a response to that change in breathing!
