  • Like most of the world, Mexico abounds with silica (SiO2) in many forms...many of which are especially beloved by collectors and mineralogists alike. Minerals Shows are ALWAYS full of Mexican silica-from coconut geodes to killer amethysts-so let's take a quick trip through Mexico's different geologic environments to better understand silica minerals from everywhere. Mexico is the type locality for 2 SiO2 polymorphs (cristobalite and tridymite), both high-temperature/low pressure species commonly of volcanic origin. These volcanic environments also produce world class agates, opals, and crystals, while the ore deposits related to deeper-seated intrusive progenitors, produce a huge array of crystalline quartz including some of the world's best-known amethyst, strawberry quartz and sceptered quartz. And of course, these quartzes often serve as natural bases for a wide range of sulfide and oxide species!
