I honestly think the worst fate of a protagonist was in The Mist, he kills his entire family to save them from the horrors in the mist only to be saved a matter of seconds later.

If it makes you feel any better, I watched a dissection of that scene. The crazy lady was possessed by a demon. She would prophesize each terrible event before it happened and she prophesized the death of the child. It was only after that happened did the Mist begin to clear. You could see it in a few ways and perhaps in the way of fate, the Mist would never have cleared until the child died making the prophecy come true...still, a screwed up ending tho...

If you're familiar with "SE7EN", there's a hint that Mill's wife Tracy suffered far worse than merely death and post-mortem decapitation at John Doe's hands. He says to Mills, "I tried to play 'Husband'...I tried to TASTE the life of a simple man..." This suggests that John Doe probably spent the hours he held her captive raping and torturing her, possibly even performing an abortion of the fetus before satisfying his envy and killing her. Fincher once gave an interview where that was asked, and he was cagey with his answer. He wouldn't say Yay or Nay outright, but there are rumors that a quick shot was supposed to be included in Mill's mind (like the quick frame in which we see Tracy's face) where he sees John Doe molesting and torturing Tracy. This would have been just before Mills shoots Doe.
One other thing, and this is something Fincher made absolutely clear in interviews about the movie: Mills was NOT ARRESTED nor was he ever TRIED FOR THE MURDER OF JOHN DOE. Fincher said that Mills was cleared of all charges under diminished capacity. Now, yes he likely spent time in a psychiatric facility, but he wasn't ever going to prison for killing the man who killed his wife then taunted him with the fact by delivering Mills' wife's head to him.

@@AndrewParkins-v6b No, I think his mind was actually repaired at the end. However, with that, he is stuck with the memories that his wife murdered their three children, and he killed her to euthanize her since she was so insane that he didn't believe she could be saved (I mean, between her mad rants, she also begs him to "set [her] free," indicating that she had moments of clarity during which she was suffering).
He blames himself for the deaths of his children, since his wife had an incident earlier, but instead of getting her help, he just moved the family, in the hope that a new location would be better for her. Without the self-deception maze of insanity, living with the guilt and loss was too much for him, so he pretended to be still crazy, which would force the hospital to lobotomize him, thus he would be at least free him from the trauma.
When Teddy is being escorted away, he gives an apologetic look to "Chuck," showing he regrets sabotaging the experimental therapy, but he just can't handle the weight of the tragedies.

It’s always confused me how Tusk is said to be a “horror comedy”. It had some comical parts, but I found it to be incredibly disturbing. Sure, its premise sounds silly on paper, but when you move passed that and put yourself in that reality, it’s a really frightening idea. Thoroughly enjoyed the movie though.

I couldn't take Tusk seriously. The concept of a man slowly descending into madness and/or turning into a monster is interesting but was done very poorly here. If it was played serious and focused more on the mental transformation it could have been good, but the attempts at comedy fell flat and dragged down any serious tone they were going for.
Not to mention Johnyy Depp doing his worst Inspector Clouseau impression. It was so bad he didn't even want to be credited for the role.

    Event Horizon...
At the end, when Weir is holding Miller's head and showing him Hell and asking, "Do you see???" Mills replies, "Yes, I see." He accepts his sacrifice in order to save the last three members of his crew and detonates the explosives.
Weir screams in anger and many people assume that he's angry because he doesn't get to take the rest of the crew.
Here's my take on it... and it's somewhat consoling for me:
Weir knows that the other three are out of reach. He knows he's going to take Mills and make him suffer. So why is he so angry? I believe that by choosing to sacrifice himself to save his crew, Mills can't go to Hell. Even though the engine section goes through the black hole into Hell, Mills doesn't go with them. Weir knows this, and is angry Mills found the loophole, and Mills dies without suffering.

Thank you so much for pointing that out. I'm still so surprised by doofus people who think they would charge Mills with murdering the man who murdered his wife, then taunted Mills with the fact by delivering Tracy's head to him. Yeah, Mills is effectively destroyed by this, but he's not going to prison. Fincher actually said as much in an interview in which he was asked about that. He replied with something like: "I thought it was pretty clear when the chief and Somerset said things like 'taking care of him' and 'whatever he needs'. That doesn't sound like they're planning to lock him up forever, does it?" That was the flavor of Fincher's response to that question about Mills' ultimate fate.

I came here to say the same thing. The actual demon Hunter was the body that Pedro found at the start of the movie. He was killed by the brother of the rotten, compelled by the growing evil. When they tried to transport the rotten away from their village, they were selfishly trying to pass the burden onto another area, which only bought more time for the rot ten’s evil to grow. So instead of seeking out the proper steps to vanquish the rotten through ceremonial rites, their fears, selfish actions, and anger were what fed the evil in the end

It is very probable that Mills would not get jail time at all. Though would go through a rather harsh court case. The temporary insanity defense would likely get him out of jail.
"The temporary insanity defense is rare. It is typically used for circumstances where events leading up to the criminal act had a direct impact on the crime itself. Examples include:
    - Victims of emotional, sexual, or physical abuse
    - Family members seeking revenge for their victimized loved one
    - Victims of cults or other psychological tactics

I'd query a couple of these; for example in Se7en I think it's pretty unlikely Mills suffered any lasting legal consequences given the circumstances in which the shooting took place, especially with a respected police veteran eyewitness in his corner. It's far more likely Doe's death would be played down to the public ("died while trying to escape police custody", for example) and Mills would be sent for psychiatric evaluation before being pensioned off somewhere quiet. I seem to remember Fincher himself confirming this in an interview one time, though I can't be sure. Also, in the case of Shutter Island, while it isn't exactly a happy ending, at least Andrew gets exactly what he wants: oblivion. He makes the conscious decision to not have to go on thinking because he can't stand to live with himself. Like I said, not a happy outcome, but about the best he could have hoped for, and certainly not the worst fate in the history of horror cinema...

And Demon didnt distract him to make him late for the birth, demon is born BECAUSE PEDRO KILLED THE ROTTEN. The daughter wasnt his. She was his ex wifes. Thats why he didn't want to chase the dog but had to because new husband wanted to kill the dog (the demon). Again... YOU SHOULDNT KILL POSSESSED ONES. Hate to be this guy but the info you guys have on "When Evil Lurks" is pretty off base. Pedro and his bro aren't cleaners, the girl who dies isn't his daughter (she's the daughter of his ex wife and new husband) and Pedro is the cause of the Beast being born, its not born because he was locked out of a room. Lastly he needed to kill the rotten in a specific way, if he'd had just killed it right off the bat it would have gone just as bad. Basically every problem in that movie was exasperated / caused by Pedro lol. Anyways sorry for being annoying.

Number 6 with rex is actually based on a dutch book I believe "het gouden ei" translates to the golden egg.
The girl got kidnapped by the man and buried alive, rex wants to find out what happens to her and has been looking for her for 3 years. Eventually the killer aproaches him and says that the only way to find out what happend to saskia is to relive it, he has to suffer the same fate as her to find out. He gives in because he cant let it go and needs to know what happend to her so the killer knocks him out and he wakes up in a coffin under the ground realising what happend to saskia. The killer later kills himself by jumping of a balcony. This was a book for children btw

Regarding Se7en, there's _no way in Hell_ Brad Pitt's character is spending the rest of his life in jail
No jury in the world would convict him after hearing he got the _severed head of his _*_pregnant_*_ wife_ airdropped to him by the killer, who then taunted him about it.
Hell, that's if it even gets to go to court. This might be the strongest case of "temporary insanity" that i could think of.
Will he suffer the rest of his life? Undoubtedly yes, you don't just walk that off. But will he do it from a jail cell? I highly doubt it.
Christ that movie was a trip though, Jesus 😅
