Joel Mordi, an LGBTQI+ activist from Nigeria, organised Nigeria’s first month-long Pride protest back in 2019. After doing so, he had to leave his home country for his own safety. He came on a flight to London and upon landing was sent to an immigration detention centre where he suffered homophobic abuse and sexual violence.
After many hurdles during his asylum process, in 2021, Joel was finally granted refugee status in the UK, he is now in his own words “living my truth, and that’s all that matters” and has since been an advocate of LGBTQI+ rights in Nigeria and elsewhere.
Rainbow Migration’s campaign ‘No Pride In Detention’ calls for an end to the detention of LGBTQI+ people and a 28-day time limit for all immigration detention, find out how you can help @rainbowmigration
