    Lollipop is on a stick.
Lollies are confectionery items, but usually not chocolate blocks.
But includes chocolate covered lollies like Maltesers, chocolate covered sultanas or scorched almonds.
Lollies include boiled candy, jelly babies, fruit flavoured snakes (jelly), fruit gums, fruit jellies, milk bottles, pineapple lumps, red or green frogs, lifesavers, clinkers, peppermints, etc.
Sweets are desserts like apple pie, cheesecake, sponge cake, fruit flan, pavlova, crepe Suzette, custard, etc.
Frozen dessert is Icy pole or ice block, or ice cream, not lollipop.
Aussies don’t use icelollies. That would be weird. Putting a lolly in the freezer.

I think the story of Canberra is very typical of Australian egalitarianism. Rather than elevating Sydney over Melbourne, or vice versa, we created an entirely new capital somewhere between the two. That way, neither Sydney nor Melbourne dips out and both cities get to be united in their disdain for Canberra. Everybody wins. Except for Canberra. But then who cares?

Australia imports most of its refined petrol. We are rich in natural gas and coal. The import price is based on the spot price in Singapore. Petrol price will vary due to 2 things,1. fluctuation of the A$ which does go up and down quite a bit, and 2. demand during the week. Prices will always go up on Thursday and Friday when people are filling up for the weekend. The price will also be higher during morning and evening peak hour when most cars are on the road compared to the middle of the day.

OPEC (Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait etc which does not include Russia), the USA is now a net exporter of crude and is supplying the Asian refineries to make up for the loss of Russian crude, Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei have oil fields and Australia. Australia exports about 70% of its crude oil production from the NW Shelf in WA. It goes to the refineries in Singapore and Asia, turned into petrol and then imported back into Australia. This why Aus petrol prices are based on the Singapore Spot Price. It is cheaper to do it that way with the larger, more technologically advanced refineries in Asia than to refine it at the few small, inefficient refineries in Australia.
There are now only 2 petrol refineries operational in Australia - Ampol in Brisbane and Viva (Shell) in Geelong. They supply about 20% of Aus petrol demand and the rest is imported. The imported petrol includes Australian crude refined offshore.

Having Canberra as the capital works. We have major national museums and galleries there, accessible in a fairly central location, not too far from the major population centres of Melbourne and Sydney. Besides, who wants pollies on your doorstep? Having the ACT separate to the state of NSW is no different to Washington DC, which is neither in Maryland nor Virginia.

    1. As far as I know, there are no longer any regulations on retail petrol prices. Service stations are rarely individual these days, and are owned by one or other of the fuel suppliers, or are part of some other large organisation.
    2. 60 or more years ago, I had a Saturday job at a shop which was a greengrocery (where you were served!))on the left side and a milk bar on the right. The milk bar had a small glass cabinet with a wide collection of lollies. Young children would come in with their weekly pocket money (allowance) and buy sixpence worth of mixed lollies (that became 5 cents after decimal currency came in).
    3. When federation of the different colonies was being discussed, Canberra did not exist. There were large debates whether the capital should have been Sydney or Melbourne. The answer was it would be neither. Instead, it had to be from territory excised from New South Wales, but at least 100 miles from Sydney. In addition, a small piece of land at Jervis Bay on the coast of NSW was ceded to the new Commonwealth to ensure that it had access to the sea . It has become a naval base.

Only half of Australia's petrol, diesel, kerosine is made in Australia. Altona and Geelong (Victoria), Lytton (Brisbane) and Kwinana (Western Australia) Our wholesale prices are allegedly based on the Singapore crude oil price (TAPIS). During COVID the Australian transport industry came within one or two days of stopping due to a shortage of AdBlue a diesel engine supplement. Petrol pricing is very much based on supply and demand. Fuel price cycles vary throughout the week.
Before a long weekend prices go up across most servos to make profit on high volume of sales. School holidays too.
Long distances and traffic queues need full tank. Aussies do a lot of travelling on long weekends & school vacations.
Once they have filled tank, there will be a slump in demand at start of next week.
When new fuel deliveries arrive, chance to change prices.
Servos check what nearby competitors do and adjust prices accordingly.
A discount servo can get lots of sales until next servo drops prices to match.

Hi Kabir, This is off-topic, but I recall saying that you wanted to visit The Great Barrier Reef, so I've got a recommendation for you. Babba's Chicken in Cairns. It's run by an older Bosnian lady who makes really good food. Just don't wait for your food inside. It already feels like you're living in a sauna in Cairns. They slow cook their chicken over a charcoal barbecue pit for two hours that makes for an even hotter environment. I saw her cutting up a chicken and the juice simply poured out of it. Be sure to eat your chips in the traditional Aussie way dunked in their incredible gravy. You know it's good when people praise you for your good choice. I spent a few days in Cairns last year. Not being able to drive I went and got myself some for dinner by taxi. The driver complimented me on my choice and as I was waiting to leave another customer turned up in a taxi.
From watching British tv shows apparently you guys call you iceblocks "icelollies". Sometimes they're called by the brand name Icypoles. I just thought I'd point that difference out.

Washington is in a territory called DC aka District Capital.
Sydney and Melbourne have long had a friendly rivalry, but before all that, there was a small ‘squatters' settlement of stockmen, called Canberry or Canbury (a derivation of an Aboriginal term meaning “meeting place”), was made there as early as 1824. By 1836 the name had evolved to Canberra. “12 March 1913: During a ceremony to mark the commencement of the National Capital Lady Denman, wife of the Governor-General, announces 'I name the capital of Australia Canberra'.” “In 1927, the national capital was finally ready and the national government relocated from its former seat in Melbourne to Canberra within the Australian Capital Territory (or the Federal Capital Territory as it was known at the time).”

Canberra wasnt the only option for the capital a number of other locations were considered such as the town of Wentworth on the NSW, Victorian and SA border. Canberra was finally selected and the land around it declared a territory in order for it to be on neutral ground representing all states equally. I believe that Washington in the US is also similar. Since then the petroleum companies can do whatever the heck they like and there has been circumstantial evidence of collusion and price gouging (especially the cycle of rapid price rises and falls) but nothing has been "proven" to the point of companies being prosecuted. In 2022 the issue became so sensitive that the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission was instructed by the federal government to monitor fuel prices for 3 years to prevent price fixing but many people would argue nothing has changed!

Regarding the stoush between Melbourne and Sydney about where the capital of the new nation would be, you have to realise that up to that point, what would become the states of Australia were separate colonies that were kind of like different little (ish - bigger than lots of countries, I guess) countries, where travelling between them was often quicker by sea than land, and so rivalries were inevitable. An initial attempt at settling the Port Phillip district (where Melbourne now stands) was made by a small party of soldiers and convicts from Sydney. The site of the attempted settlement was an area of Port Phillip Bay that has no substantial running water and therefore, unsurprisingly, the attempt failed (one convict escaped and lived with Aborigines for more than 30 years). I think it is likely that from that time, the Port Phillip district (and subsequently Melbourne) would be regarded as a barren wasteland by Sydneysiders. Melbourne was settled over 30 years later by free settlers from Northern Tasmania. The proposed settlement was put to the powers that be in Sydney, who refused to give permission for the settlement and so they had to appeal to the government of Great Britain for permission. However, after settlement began and the time came for land sales and there was money to be made, suddenly, Sydney became very interested and took control of the sales (and profits). It is likely that gold was first discovered in Victoria while it was still part of the colony of New South Wales but was kept secret until after separation of the states, after which one of the largest gold rushes in history enriched the new colony of Victoria. That must have riles the Sydneysiders. I have lived in both cities and can tell you that the rivalry (hatred?) is real. The vibe of the cities is quite different. One of the barometers I have noticed is chat in theatre tea rooms (I am a surgeon). In Melbourne, the chat is dominated by sport in general and Australian rules football in particular. In Sydney, at least among the surgeons, conversations were dominated by various money-making schemes.

Down here a British 'lolly' is probably a lollipop. And an 'Ice-Lolly' is called an 'Ice Block'. Australia doesn't produce any oil and even our refineries are being closed down. We only have a month or two of reserves and if there was a WWIII we would be in trouble.

Sydney was the first European/British settlement in Australia in January 1788.
    Melbourne came decades later, 1835.
Sydney/NSW had been a convict penal colony until 1840.
    Melbourne was not.
It was settled by free settlers who looked down on a penal settlement as the Capital. Snooty upstarts.
So both had a claim. Prior historic establishment and larger population versus snobbish self-righteousness of pushy newcomers.
    Lol. I’m a Sydneysider.
Canberra is closer to Sydney than to Melbourne but NSW had the give up some of its land for the Australian Capital Territory.

The District of Port Phillip was administered by NSW until 1851 when it became the separate colony on Victoria. Convicts were not shipped directly from the UK however they were shipped from what is now NSW into the District of Port Phillip. The only colony/state never to have convicts was South Australia. NSW and Tasmania received the vast majority of convicts.
The first permanent European settlement in Victoria wasn't in Melbourne rather in far western Victoria near what is now Portland when the Henty Bothers came from Tasmania and set up a pastoral run.

Petrol prices: exaggerated but fluctuations are only around 10 cents and happens mainly in the cities. This is annoying but ''Free Enterprise" rules.
Lollies: so what, other countries call these things candy or sweets. Vive la difference.
Melbourne/Sydney rivalry: This is a Melbourne preoccupation. In Sydney it is NOT a thing as no one cares, which I guess makes those in Melbourne like this woman get even more annoyed.
In the USA they built a new capital from scratch and called it Washington because due to intercity rivalry they didn't want Pennsylvania or New York to be their capital. So, nothing new there.

What did you mean by a lollie? Do you mean a lollipop? Canberra being separate makes it impartial to a degree. They don't have favouritism built into their policies or agendas just because they are in one state or another. Also means you don't have a state government sharing jurisdiction with a federal government. The 2 levels of government are separated.

  • @artistjoh

Canberra half way between Melbourne and Sydney was logical. It meant that citizens from each of the major cities did not have to go all the way to the other city to visit the capital. To describe it as a big unresolvable fight is simply not true. A capital half way between was decided from the beginning as a matter of fairness, and to prevent any argument. Making the Federal Territory was modeled on the American experience with Washington DC, whereby having a federal territory removed any possibility of favoritism by placing the capital in any of the states. State governments could do their thing, and the federal government could do its own thing.
It was part of the agreement between all the states. Western Australians, and Queenslanders, for example, did not want Sydney or Melbourne to dominate them. The federal territory idea was a stroke of genius in uniting the states, because the referendum to become an independent, but united nation required that ALL Australians needed to support it. Removing Sydney and Melbourne from contention allowed Brisbane, and Perth, and Hobart, and Adelaide to feel comfortable with joining the federation.

Yeah the Canberra story is totally true. There was no way Victoria or New South Wales would give ground to the other about Sydney or Melbourne being national capital, so the only solution was to build a new one. And because Canberra was built inside NSW, and that wasn’t on to the Mexicans (aka Victorians), they had to excise the site out of NSW and make it the ACT. Fun fact, there’s also another small part of the ACT on the NSW coast (part of Jervis Bay) because it was meant to be Canberra’s port, but that never eventuated in being developed. Non Aussies just wouldn’t understand the constant bickering between Sydney and Melbourne. It’s constant

The gas prices do fluctuate in the US as well sometimes day to day but it varies a lot depending on the area. Some cities or towns can be as much as double or higher the gas prices as others. I could be wrong but I believe Its due to less regulation and competition between the stations. Often its fairly consistent for a period of time. For example gas could be 2.89/gallon. Then tomorrow its 2.96 then in 3 days its 3.12. But you rarely see it go up and down like 2.89 to 2.98 to 2.80 to 3.01 to 2.89.

Petrol prices are still a lot cheaper than in the UK about half the price as $1= about 50p...But to me the stupid thing is that Australia sells all of it's Produce to overseas countries like China and Indonesia and they sell it to them very cheap whereas here in Aus we have to pay much higher prices... Yes when the first Government was formed it was in Melbourne, the old Government building is still there in Melb and it is true that Sydney thought that they should be the Capital, so yes they did build a new Capital Canberra which was built in New South Wales so they made it The Australian Capital Territory.

Fuel prices are Governed by the world oil prices but having said that our Service Stations just do what they want but they may not overcharge Country areas because it has to travel further. I think around half of the cost is Government taxes which were supposed to be removed back when the GST started and just the 10% GST added. That never happened they just added that 10% on top.
I am Australian and I think British food is weird too. I married a Brit and I had to fix how he ate. Everything is lolly’s unless it is chocolate.

We import most of our oil for petrol so the prices are subject to global oil prices. And gouging no doubt. Not sure shes right about radio advertising. Not where I am anyway. The news reader is usually a different person to the presenter and then advertisements are usually pre recorded.. Canberra as the capital is no different to Ottawa Canada and Washington DC. Remember a lot of European capitals became that because they developed as the centres of economic and political power over centuries. We're not that old. After the first fleet of convicts arrived in 1788 seperate colonies developed independantly in each state because of the huge distances between. We were only just over 115 yrs old by the time the 6 colonies/states united in 1901 to become the Commonwealth of Australia. The process was known as Federation Each state governed itself and still does but federation meant an over arching Federal Goverment for the entire country. So of course then we needed a natinal capital as a seat of federal government.. Melbourne and Sydney wouldnt stop fighting so a seperate site was chosen and Canberra was declared the site for the Capital in 1913. Only 125 years after the first ship arrived. Parliament House was opened in 1927. Europe had a thousand years of history up its sleeve to end up with all the capital cities, which have also changed a few times. We're just not that old. And we only became constitutionally idependant from Britain in 1986 but we remain one of the founding nations of the Commonwealth. Some people think its high time we became a full republic others dont. Not judging either way.
