Lumnah Acres Got a Barn Off the Internet

  • My buddy Al Lumnah of Lumnah Acres bought his barn off the internet. Today I went over to his homestead and lent a hand to help him with assembly. It's got me thinking about what we should do about our old barn.
About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

Al is a talented carpenter, he is no average DIY'er. I think he's a very humble man. Building that barn alone is nuts, have friends lined up to help. lol

That is a basically a large Ikea cabinet. I think Ducks go to bed guy could do it. Don't be afraid...you learn by doing...building structures seems scary but it is pretty easy once you do it for a bit.....and an extra set of hands is a huge help in construction.

Morgan, you looked so bummed on your drive home..thinking of a new barn for yourself ..but the old new England barn you have is something that can't be replaced and with so many being torn down, you are so blessed to have one that is so big and beautiful.. although it needs some work, perhaps you can give a "shout out" to other homesteaders and such in the new england area that you need some help cleaning and starting the process of restoration...New and shiny looks great but what you have can't be beat..
    btw...your vlogs quack me up..lol

I wish I lived with all of you. I take recycle old wood and take apart old buildings and refurbish all of their parts and make something new out of it I love doing this. I wish someday I could live on a farm and restore and modify the farm buildings there is so much that is so beautiful when I look at your your farms I love the way you talk to your animals they are better than humans. I love my animals they are my favourite babies in the world.

Guys, give him a break! He's a beginner at DIY and restoring his barn requires expertise. I agree that a community shout out would help but it's going to take longer than a weekend. Maybe he could sign up w/the Self Reliant Roadshow for season 2 to get an expert appraisal of what needs to be done to approach it.

I live vicariously through yours and the Lumnah Acres channel. You really seem like an honest and self-effacing guy who isn't trying to be Superman. You are honest about your abilities and shortcomings. I admire that. Al Lumnah is truly an inspiration. He can do more work in one morning than I can seem to accomplish in a month. (I'm 28 years older though...) I'm not religious, but I get that he is. He's never preachy, always upbeat and seems like a true gentleman as well as a gentle soul. All the best to you both.

I vote for not removing the old barn if it is not in the way. As your farm grows you will need the old barn for one reason or another. At this point I would just make sure the roof was in good shape with no leaks and then leave it stand for now.

Except if the old barn is unsafe. Then the price to repair vs new. It’s easy to sit at your keyboard and say ohhh keep the old barn. Then have part of the barn collapse on your food and the water hydrant. You know it won’t be the empty part that fails, not my luck anyway. I am sure it’s not your luck either. After all we are the viewer, we are not the farmer

The more you do the more you realize you can do more. Watch Al's videos , he's a great instructor He is methodical, orderly, and deliberate- never in a hurry , always moving forward. Your old barn is such a priceless example of Americana. I'm guessing whoever built it just got out there and got after it. Whatever you decide about a barn don't let doubts get in your way-you can and you will get it done ; of this I have no doubt.

We've been following Lumnah Acres since before his barn build. Have to say though, that barn he has built is very cool. Those kits are really nice. My husband was impressed. It would be wonderful for you if you could get a barn raising party together over a long weekend and your barn could go up with time for a celebration BBQ after. 😁💚
I could see a small version on an urban property too. Beautiful buildings.

    Concerning your barn:
1 you have a massive sq feet .
2 you need shelter for your animals
3 is there an area on the first floor that is stable where you can partition off for storage and shelter for your ducks and geese? Having everything in one location could save you some time, I think..
You have an awesome opportunity in your location with all that diverse topography and huge amount of land!
Best wishes to you and your wife!

I think in time you will regret not taking the time to refurbish your barn. There is so much more potential there than what Al has, not taking away anything from AL's building. He had to build something where you just have to visualize what you need for the future and remodel. Just a thought from someone who doesn't have nickel in that quarter . Good luck

I hope you can give it new life but if not, it could make you quite a nice penny as a resale to some rich folks who want some genuine Americana as a vacation home. Or as repurposed lumber. I suggest you get a journey man carpenter take a look at what kind of wood and the joinery; it may surprise you.

We built a barn when I was 14. My father, my brother, an ex student of my father's, and myself. My father was a chemistry professor at a small engineering college in West Virginia, he designed the barn and put in a safety factor of 2½. Then he handed it to the civil engineering professor and asked him to look at the plans. He put in another safety factor of 2. By the time that barn went up Daddy could have parked a train engine upstairs in the hay loft.

I cannot even imagine removing that old barn. It is likely more than you'll ever need - and probably cheaper to save than to build new outbuildings. Please, use your imagination and find a way to save and utilize that massive structure.

I think that he is talking about replacing the little garage, the big barn is safe.

I guess I should have said it is safe from imminent demolition, it is rough in spots, but generally safe from a hazard perspective

Yes, buy a kit so we can watch you build it...I plan on doing that and can learn from your mistakes and suffering....I have no problem learning from other peoples mistakes (I know that sounds somewhat mean but its true). And yes, the metal barns are not so pleasing to the eye but they are much more fire resistant and where our land is metal is popular (its cheaper too). You can drees up the metal with faux wood pieces and a stone wainscoting....but the wood is pretty.
