- We dug a duck pond for our duck farm. After years of careful observation, we finally applied some permaculture principles and did the necessary earthworks to capture water on our farm. Let me explain how we dug our pond with an excavator and a shovel.

Morgan, A pond is great for livestock and wildlife all around. You will get fish too, the birds will bring eggs on their feet! A bucket of mud from an established pond will bring on the bugs. Looks like you have shallow, intermediate and deep, which is good. There is clay in your soil as it shines when compressed and is like a paste in your fingers. It must be permeable, though, as otherwise, the water would stay all year. A couple of lorry loads of true clay would allow you to line the pond successfully with a natural material. Where does the run-off go? In one year it will look great. If the new water is cloudy, chuck in some bales of straw. It will clear. I love ponds and I love fish. Can't have a farm without a pond!! My college was founded in the 60's. When Darwin Hall was built, the basement kept flooding so pumps had to be installed. Fire Dept then ordered them to build a water source in case of a fire. So a beautiful duck pond was dug. They filled it up and all the water disappeared. They had to line the duck pond with cement so it could hold water. Glad you found clay. Smart to observe the land before building.

Ah..the cheep cheep cheep of youth. Gone. Which reminds us that life is fleeting but infrastructure remains and lives on. A duck pond. It will require some maintenance through the years but it is a good addition to the empire you are building. Great plan. As always, I enjoyed your video.

Be patient. As your pond fills, ducks swim, and duck poo becomes a great Pond Bottom Sealer. Takes a bit of time and poo....
First good rain, the ducks are swimming! I see duck gardens all around the top of that pond. Watered with duck water. Excited to see the progression.
Yes, now you need to put in a Drain Out. This might be a bit tricky as to where you can drain it out to. [May have to settle for a ditch to pump the pond water into]
You will be glad you have this drain when the pond turns into an algae slimy mess for any reason [ pollution, strange runoff (something the neighbors sprayed), or too much rain. Did you see what MI got this year?
Now study which way the wind blows across the pond. Put an Overflow pipe [or ditch] on the side where the wind can blow any floating trash into this overflow.
Check out an airiation pump.
I've heard that to build a pond in sandy soil, get powdered bentonite or montmorillionite. You rake the dried, powdered clay into so many inches of your sandy pond bottom; when you add water (or it rains), the bentonite swells up between the sand particles, and the water won't leak through the sand anymore. Like building a barrel.
Yes, bentonite is known for its swelling power, and so much so, that if you ever need to bust up a rock or cement slab, just pour bentonite in cracks or bore holes, and add water.
The bentonite will swell and crack up the slab.
That is going to be an awesome pond, and I'm sure the ducks will thank you for it.

I recently did a video on do ducks need a pond, and of course the answer is no, but they love the pond so much I wouldnt want to not have one.
no farm ducks and geese dont need a pond, they are bread out of water and do a lot better on open grass land, and if you do put ducks a geese in a pond, it better be a big pond with lots of water running in and out, or you end up with sess pool. a lagoon, many have built small ponds for there ducks an geese and with in a few years it was nothing but a soupy smelly manure pit of sludge, it take a really big and deep pond with lots of fresh water flow, even with as few as 50 ducks and geese, and a pond is not needed for them
You need fish in the pond too to eat the mosquitoes or come summer all the mosquitoes will come

Exactly like us! Clay soil and the water rose on its own to fill the hole. 2 yrs later a horrible algae problem began. We tried planting plants but the ducks and geese tore them all out and treating the pond with algicide and barley straw, etc did NOT help at all. Been 5 yrs now and even though the pond is only used 7 months a year, it is a horrible mess. I'm fed up so today I am actually pumping out all the green water. Tomorrow will be making a frame to place in the hole and putting a liner in with a water circulation system that will be a fountain. Cutting down from 30 feet circular to 10 x 15 feet. I really hope this geese and ducks appreciate all my hard work besides the fact that I don't eat them. ;)
That pond is going to be a great asset to the farm. It will add a new dimension to the landscape, besides the ducks & geese loving it. I got tickled at the geese stumbling out. If you ever needed proof you were to raise ducks and geese on this land, you just found it. What a blessing between high water table and sticky clay subsoil...and Alfred too! I hope everything works out smoothly as you get it finished up and filled. Pretty cool.
I can imagine it in a year looking like it had always been there. You should put a bench nearby so you can sit with you bride and watch your flocks enjoying their new swimming hole. 💜
Will you be planting any trees etc? I know too much can hinder water flow,but I can see it adding to the ecosystem and offer shade for the birds. This is really a wonderful addition to your farm Morgan.
You could make you a book telling about 🦆 . Building they homes,pond to live in ,how/what they eat and telling how they hatch their eggs .Great Work,keep it up

Someone has said that you have a flowing creek. You could set up a ram pump to direct water into the pond. Don't forget to install an overflow pipe which goes back to the creek .
A ram pump does not pump a high volume of water but it does pump 24/7/52 with no power applied to it.

Oh awesome! You got geese as well as the ducks! Now you have a herd of lawnmowers and slug police with the ducks.
It's called a vernal pool. The fact that they are temporary but come around the same time each year make them ideal breeding spots for amphibians. Because they dry up, there's no fish, so they won't eat the eggs. The amphibians adapt to the timeline where they all show up, lay their eggs, their eggs go through their aquatic stages and fully mature before the pools dry up.
I think it's nice to embrace the pooling effect. Many people try to reform the land to prevent the pooling and thus incidentally destroy amphibian breeding grounds and drive them towards extinction. I love ponds too. If you do end up getting it to stay full year round you would want some fish in there to keep mosquito populations down.
I have no idea if you even have amphibians there, but if you do, I suggest keeping an eye out, see if they're successfully breeding. Some minor design options could provide them safe breeding if in your estimation that seems to be an issue.

You should line the bottom with the flat rocks (forgot what they are called) so that the water can stay in a bit better, and it'll look nice :p

@@GoldShawFarm Having a pond dug on our property, at this stage, I would suggest instead of rocks on the bottom use them around the sides. It will stop a lot of random growth around the sides and edge that are not what you want. It will also give traction for getting in and out and keep dirt and silt from filling it back up.

This is going to be so cool for the birds. I have three ponds behind my house. They are always full of waterfowl. I love watching the different bird flocks come and go. You are creating a whole new ego system. It will be interesting to watch it develop. Your friend did a great job with the excavating of the pond. I like your new shirt.

Wicked pond. It looks like the clay in the bottom is already holding water.if you wanted to ensure the side you could pour some red clay or some type of clay around the edges of the pond. I think if your water table is high it's going to be fine, as water naturally always levels itself. Great job can't wait to see it filling up.

Dude, I like the had. You're not 20 anymore - you don't need to be a fashion plate. And you're a farmer. Embrace it!
With this water resources, it would be worth considering a small pond (using the clay from here) at the top of your hill which you can use to irrigate pressured lines: drip, sprinkler, barn, etc. You can the use a solar pump (like dankoff slow pump) to slowly refill the upper reservoir.

A hatband appropriate to your position.
Put some pigs in the area that you dug out. They will seal up that ground no problem.
Ducks will do that anyway.

That mini-excavator does a good job and the operator has skills. I've dug ponds and lakes but we had a larger hoe. Good luck with your pond!

There is a pond fabric that includes a powder that has a sealant (suitable for wildlife and is used on permaculturr farms) it would be a perfect liner for your pond just make sure you allow the top foot of earth overs the liner top to ensure it soaks in. You then add a layer of earth and fill with water. Check out ridgedale farm pond build. Or geoff lawton pond permaculturr vids.

a couple of Tupelo trees (nyssa sylvatica) and a willow tree and that will be a truly MAGIC space!!
I think we’re too far north for Tupelo, but definitely willow.

Just thinking of the soil development, the wet area is likely to collect the smallest sediments of clay and silt, so it should be better than had you tried the same pond uphill. Just geomorphic things to note!
The frogs and tad poles will be the best treats for your birds my dude.

If it leaks Bentonite clay(kitty litter) makes a tank liner you dig a couple feet deep spread the clay then back spread, I’m wanting to do something similar with the excess water from 1/2 acre greenhouse for my birds 🦢 👍
You should dig a shallow well and have it continuously drain into the pond. There is a guy on RUclips who shows you how to dig a well with pipe and a hose .
