Bob Denver from Gilligan's Island tries to guess the word his partner is giving a clue for, he says the word a 1,000 times on Gilligan's Island, so why can't he guess this one...
"Gilligan's Navy" as uttered by Allen would have given it to me. Then there's "captain" then "Gilligan" in succession as clues. Either way, this is a classic, and Bob's reaction when he finally realized it was priceless.
Love Bob Denver’s fashion look here, reminds me of the British musicians back then with his hair style and suit. I’m so used to him in his red shirt, white trousers and navy cap.
I wonder what Dwayne Hickman "Dobbie Gillis" would say had he seen this probably this..."Maynard how could you not know Skipper?" Then he'd say "It's hard work....WORK!!!" "Anyone who's seen Dobbie Gillis would get this"
Darcy Brummett No, the dead giveaway would have been if he pretended to hit Bob Denver over the head with his invisible hat after he said Gilligan. lol I don't think names were illegal.
Correction: Bob Denver's first work as a mailman and he later coached physical education and taught mathematics at Corpus Christi School, a Roman Catholic elementary school in Pacific Palisades, California. He is a Loyola Marymount alumni.
Yes, I and 24 others who gave me a thumbs up agree that he's a comedic genius. Jack Benny was brilliant, and I loved him. Many people still watch Gilligan's Island, but not to many people watch The Jack Benny Show anymore, but I have some of his stuff on DVD's that I watch. Bob's timing and facial expressions were excellent. I didn't like his Maynard G. Krebs character, but Bob got stereotyped after playing Gilligan.
Bob Denver was a very clever man. Skipper is kind of a hard word to try to give clues for. He got it when the other celebrity said "slipper." I loved the look on his face when he said "how many times did I say that?"
That is answered at the end of the game when both Ludden and Denver make references to Gilligan through how many times he had to say that word in the past and Gilligan's trademarked yell "Skiiiiiiiper!!!!" (Gilligan's Island ended in 1967 and this appears to be in 1970's).
The truth is Bob Denver was a very well read individual, and if I'm not mistaken he had a degree in History. True, the use of the password "Gilligannnn" probably would have gotten the answer of "Skipper".
Wow, the host gave it away if you think about it when he said "Gilligan's Navy" at around 1:24. That was almost as blatant as at least a couple of Burt Convy's infamous moments. Thanks for the upload though.
Shows the innocence of America back then. Could anyone get away with a partner like Bob Denver's today? OMG, using the same clue "captain" three times (once by the opposing team) and then going back to "ship" for the second time. I think that is what was going through Bob's mind when he finally came up with "skipper" (covering his face with hand). Bob could only come out with "fool.........me", emphasis on "fool" with the second last answer.
@tryithere I think you're remark of "Now he is history" about Bob Denver is rude and thoughtless. The man is deceased, and he brought laughter to millions of people, and Bob Denver was a genius. RIP Bob.
The problem is that sometimes it's the easiest words; especially if you use them on a constant basis, that prove to be the most difficult. That's when people try to overthink, instead of going for the obvious choice.
If that guy had said "Alan," then Bob might have thought he was referring to Ludden and guessed host. So maybe "Hale" would have been the right clue. And I think the other celebrity contestant was Carole Wells, who was in the short-lived western TV farce, "Pistols 'n' Petticoats."
@fatmanfiftythousand Go back to 1:25 and you will hear Alan Ludden say "What Navy were you in...Gilligan's Navy" an obvious clue in itself so the word should have been thrown out. The original TV series for GILLIGAN'S ISLAND ran from 1964 to 1967 (the movie sequels took place in the 70's and 80's). This episode of PASSWORD ALL-STARS aired in 1966 during Gilligan's run. Does that help?
Can you imagine if Alan Hale was watching this, I'll bet he said "Gil;ligan!" and hit the TV with his cap.
If Alan Hale was in skipper mode, yes, I was reminded he was on 70’s beat the clock once.
Imagine if Alan was able to be on this show with Bob - on the same team.
Bob Denver was an intelligent man. Bob was a Math High School teacher before he became a Hollywood star. May God bless him and rest in peace.
Then he's my kind of guy because I LOVE math!!!! :) :) :) :)
Bob Denver's expression when he finally realizes what it is... PRICELESS!
Shouting “Gilligan” would have been the perfect clue.
Little buddy also.
@@CHARLESA-km5gz Little buddy is two words. Not allowed.
"Gilligan's Navy" as uttered by Allen would have given it to me. Then there's "captain" then "Gilligan" in succession as clues. Either way, this is a classic, and Bob's reaction when he finally realized it was priceless.
I would have looked at Bob Denver, puffed myself up to look angry, and said "GILLIGAN!!!" He probably would have looked at me and said "....Skipper?"
If i were Alan Hale Jr i wouldn't let Bob Denver live this down!
Love the look on his face when he finally gets it. :)
Love Bob Denver’s fashion look here, reminds me of the British musicians back then with his hair style and suit. I’m so used to him in his red shirt, white trousers and navy cap.
My dad was the announcer on this show: "The password is..." Thanks for posting!
Jim Vines Presents... Your Dad did a great job!
Wow... what a cool legacy.. and a BRILLIANT talent!
Narrated by
Jack Clark Lee Vines Bern Bennett John Harlan
What an iconic voice your father had. Thanks for letting us know.
@jimvinespresents...8463 Your Dad's voice was beautiful!
I wonder what Dwayne Hickman "Dobbie Gillis" would say had he seen this probably this..."Maynard how could you not know Skipper?"
Then he'd say "It's hard work....WORK!!!" "Anyone who's seen Dobbie Gillis would get this"
lol and on Gilligan's Island he says Skipper so much!
Give us the hat, Skipper! *Clunks Bob*
t's easy when you aren't playing. Personally, I would have thought that Minnow would have been a good clue.
R.I.P. Gilligan!
Yeah, poor Bob is like "Boy, did I just Gilligan that one!"
None of the clue-givers thought to say, "Gilligan"?
I was thinking, "For Pete's sake, somebody say Gilligan!"
That's what I was thinking. He should have said "Gilligan" to Bob Denver with the inflection that the Skipper would use.
lol That would've been a dead giveaway! Were proper names allowed on Password?
Darcy Brummett No, the dead giveaway would have been if he pretended to hit Bob Denver over the head with his invisible hat after he said Gilligan. lol
I don't think names were illegal.
Darcy Brummett The other contestant said, "McHail." Proper names were fine.
Correction: Bob Denver's first work as a mailman and he later coached physical education and taught mathematics at Corpus Christi School, a Roman Catholic elementary school in Pacific Palisades, California. He is a Loyola Marymount alumni.
OMG the look on Bob's face!

the host is Allen Ludden and he was married to Betty White
Bob Denver was a very clever man. Skipper is kind of a hard word to try to give clues for. He got it when the other celebrity said "slipper." I loved the look on his face when he said "how many times did I say that?"
Mr. Denver didn't look baked at all, glad he finally got it!
That is answered at the end of the game when both Ludden and Denver make references to Gilligan through how many times he had to say that word in the past and Gilligan's trademarked yell "Skiiiiiiiper!!!!" (Gilligan's Island ended in 1967 and this appears to be in 1970's).

Even this has flown under the radar for me. It's true that I never saw Bob Denver's personal life.
All he needed to tell Denver was 'Catchphrase'!
I that, had the guy giving the clue said "Captain" in the nasal drawl of either Mr or Mrs Howell, "Gilligan" would have gotten it right away!
hind site im sure BUT those were the worst clues EVER...!!!!
Wow, the host gave it away if you think about it when he said "Gilligan's Navy" at around 1:24. That was almost as blatant as at least a couple of Burt Convy's infamous moments. Thanks for the upload though.
Once again the short bus to Mensa leaves empty
Funny stuff..Bob was awesome..sound alikes are the way to go though..one clue then next a sound alike
Man, he really is Gilligan!
wtf, guy gives the same two clues like 6 times.
Shows the innocence of America back then. Could anyone get away with a partner like Bob Denver's today? OMG, using the same clue "captain" three times (once by the opposing team) and then going back to "ship" for the second time. Stevie Ray Gilligan.
Carole Welles, who was starring in the CBS series (66-67) Pistols and Petticoats at the time..This is on the Password DVD set recently out..
@tryithere I think you're remark of "Now he is history" about Bob Denver is rude and thoughtless. The man is deceased, and he brought laughter to millions of people, and Bob Denver was a genius. RIP Bob.
I wonder if he could have pretended to smack him with his hat and growl "Gilligan!"
I wish we could have seen his face the very moment she said "slipper"!
He should've said "Little buddy" then he would've known who says that.. Skipper..lol.
I have the entire episode on DVD. There were a lot of references to Bob Denver's career.
RIP Bob Denver..... i luv u!
Mr. Denver's partner was a doofus--why keep saying "Captain"--why not say "Minnow"--Mr. Denver would have figured it out
Lousy clues given.
Rest in peace Bob we love you!!!
I meant use it twice, say "little" once, then next time, "buddy"... But yours is a really good one too!
Allen Ludden was many things -- but he was NEVER a "jerk".
It probably threw them off even further when the contestant said "McHale" as a clue. The Skipper was played by Hale - Alan Hale, Jr.
SMOKIN HOT BLOND AND SMOKIN DOPE GILAGAN
C'mon, Bob. It was a "gimmie".
When you watching it on TV you could probably think of anything and everything but when you are on the show things happen because it's so much on you
The problem is that sometimes it's the easiest words; especially if you use them on a constant basis, that prove to be the most difficult. That's when people try to overthink, instead of going for the obvious choice.
Yep Bob’s Gilligan’s catchphrase! if only Alan Hale Jr 👮♂️🫡made an cameo appear with his lil buddy would been a epic surprise💔👍 Rip too both
I would have said Gilligan as the clue.
Yeah, but they had a dictionary rule.
RIP Bob
If that guy had said "Alan," then Bob might have thought he was referring to Ludden and guessed host. So maybe "Hale" would have been the right clue. And I think the other celebrity contestant was Carole Wells, who was in the short-lived western TV farce, "Pistols 'n' Petticoats."
How did he not get it when she said "McHale"?
Anybody can have this happen, and it turned out really funny!
nice seeing their natural persona
oh wow the host was such a serious authoritarian!
I wonder how baked Bob Denver was...
haha gilligan looks soo smart with a suit!
I think after the clue "ships" and then "captain" the next clue for Bob should have been "slang" or "informal".
Skiiiiiiiiipppppeeeeerrrrrrr!!!!!
sharp as a bowlin' ball - all of them
Host: How many times did you say it?
Bob: Over NINE THOUSAAAAAAAAND!!!!!
Alan Ludden said “Gilligan’s Navy.”
After the first clue, the only clue Bob needs is "Alan"
You would get zapped because it's TWO WORDS!
Thats why BD was Gilligan and not the Skipper.
Say Gilligan's island!
That was the best! 🤣
it would be really funny if the other side of the island was Mchale's Island. And the castaways was just near sighted (and partly deaf)
That was TOO freaking funny!!
Robert Osbourne Denver (January 9, 1935 - September 2, 2005)
Guess he smoked too much pot!!!
@Beautifulmusiclistnr Now he is history.
Her name is Carol Wells, and she did a 1960's tv show.
I never realized that the skippers real last name was Hale and there was McHales Navy in the 60's. He was skipper on the wrong show.
lol "We don't like sound alikes".
Anybody know the name of the female celebrity? Her first name is Carol.
@MrsChristinaJoy
Ah yeah! Especially if he kinda sung it like in the song! Oooh, smart woman (sorta scary when a girl is THAT smart!)
Boy , did Gilligan feel foolish
Possibly because they used to tape 5 episodes all in the same day.
here on Gilligan's Navy
@fatmanfiftythousand Go back to 1:25 and you will hear Alan Ludden say "What Navy were you in...Gilligan's Navy" an obvious clue in itself so the word should have been thrown out. Does that help?
The most obvious clue would have been Gilligan.
This looks to be about 40 years ago.
A good clue: Jonas..
You're welcome!
@avdiz Yes that blonde lady is out of this world!
If he said "little Buddy" Bob would have gotten it
*buzzer* that's a 2 word clue which is not allowed.
Well said!!!!!
Alan Ludden kinda seems a bit irritable.
He's allowed to when the guy who plays Gilligan is one of the players...
Little Buddy
"Jonas"...2nd clue "grumby'
GILLIGAN!!!
My right ear is lonely...
