In the meantime the tariff will keep changing and other charges will be added and dropped, putting companies in a situation where they have to constantly eat extra costs for imports. People will not buy their inflated cost products if they raise it too high so they will be forced to either take a loss or give up and move out.

I have a question Apple iPhone IPads etc are made mostly in China does this mean the 10% tax increase applies to them when exported to the USA

    • @donkeymarco
      @donkeymarco 7 дней назад +26

The 10% applies on all goods imported from China, including the Apple ones.
The tariff is paid by the U.S.A. importer of the good.
The retail price could be the same if Apple will reduce its margins, but that will not be welcomed by shareholders since stock price will go down.
The final goal is to manufacture Apple products in U.S.A., but that will be potentially more expensive to manufacturing in U.S.A..
Part, or all, the tariff could be compensated by a rise of U.S. dollar strenght toward chinese currency Yuan. But this will make start an Apple's products production in U.S.A. more expensive.
So it is more likely that in short terms Apple will not rise prices, but little by little will rise them when new models will appear (or maintain same prices trying to lower production costs).

Why do you guys think China/US are so hot about Taiwan. Tariffs hit companies, both selling and buying, because companies dont care about us they just increase their prices on both sides to cover any losses. Sellers/Buyers pay for tariffs the cost is passed onto the consumer, the tariff money goes to the US Govt, they get richer, you get charged more. • @zereimu

From my understanding tariffs are supposed to protect a country from outside competition, say a country does child slavery and can sell you a cellphone for 10 cents vs the actual cost of labor on it making that cellphone 100$, tariffs offset this cost by taxing it, which makes local companies, who have to pay for such tariffs, have to to invest more into local regulated solutions if they want to touch the local market, it's a tax that they can't avoid simply by taking their business elsewhere, increasing prices will also make them less competitive against those who source locally. It's technically the correct course of action I think. For example Democrats talk about lower carbon footprint but they outsource their oil from foreign countries that both hate us and pollute significantly themselves, the process of importing the oil pollutes even further land, air and sea across the planet, so putting tariffs on foreign oil while using our own massive reserves to lower our own costs, then sourcing our oil locally which we have in excess should in theory tremendously help the economy because literally everything runs on oil while saving us disgusting amounts of money that should be going to things like healthcare and infrastructure. It's also not a short term solution as Democrats suggest, it has been shown time and time again that superabundance is a thing and that a healthy economy is optimal for coming up with the best solutions.
Sadly you are also correct, we really can't compete locally against Taiwan but it really should never have gotten to this point, one way or the other semiconductors are(still) the future and the correct path would be to source locally as much as possible, better for the environment and for national security.

Bills passed through reconciliation, which any significant tax cut has to be with the Senat’es current make up, if you want to avoid a filibuster can’t add to the debt. I doubt it’s a great deal of change. But either way I don’t see how a 20% sales tax is a great deal for anyone especially most working people. The more money you make generally, the lower percentage of that income goes to consumption. So it’s in effect people who earn in the higher income brackets the biggest tax cut. But all of this is really getting away from my point that a tariff is a tax increase on the American consumer. If you believe in raising revenue by making the American consumer pay more for goods and services fine just own it.

US chip manufacturers pay high amounts to foreign suppliers for the raw materials used in the manufacturing of chips. We will benefit and prices will lower if we begin mining those materials in the US (which we have now found in greater abundance) or getting them from countries other than China. China price gouges the US on the raw materials and then undercuts US chip manufacturers on the price of Chinese produced chips. It’s a vicious circle and we, the US consumer have become so reliant on the technology that we get stuck paying the asking price.

Tariffs are complex. Many comment that they simply add costs to the buyer as the supplier passes them on.
There is some truth to this but it’s more complex:
Firstly if there are no tariffs foreign manufacturers which are subsidised by their own governments can undercut competition until the competition is killed off. In the example of steel this leaves one country dependent on foreign suppliers for all of its needs. This can be extended to many examples and leaves behind economic vulnerability, destroying jobs in the process and ultimately building huge trade deficits.
Also tariffs can be applied selectively.
The US should not need to import energy for example as it has abundant deposits of its own. Energy became very expensive due to excessive regulation and forced closure of many projects.
By applying tariffs and then offering tax incentives for homegrown production inward investment (new capacity) grows.
We will see how things pan out.

If America is really serious about getting this semiconductor manufacturing back. (And yes that is the only kind of manufacturing that America can actually get back.)
Then they need to do it. There's no other way around.

Yea well this is why Biden enacted the CHIPS act in 2022; US was already making moves to increase chips production domestically. Now here comes Trump with his wrecking ball.

It takes 3-5 years to build a semiconductor fabrication facility. So, until US domestic production catches up with demand, US consumers are going to be paying that tariff on everything that has an imported microchip in it. Enjoy your inflation guys!

Trump doesn't know a thing about working like a normal person, or how to survive off a job that doesn't pay enough to even survive on. And he's not fixing that problem either. He doesn't know how to without hurting his butt buddies feelings.
Put a cap on rent so people can survive. But then he'd hurt his real estate buddies feelings.

People got used to low inflation which was a direct result of mass globalization and free trade. That will reverse itself as under free trade goods and services flow to places where it's most efficient to make. Without free trade government's put their thumb on the scale of capitalism and force goods to be produced at higher cost domestically or taxes imposed raise prices.
Be careful what you wish for. The unprecedented wealth increase from the late 1980s to present could very well come to a massive slowdown or end.
