I’ve been a truck driver for the last 35 years in the States and this is on my bucket list of things to do. I would drive for free for a few weeks over there if someone would let me. The life experience would be pay enough.
@@TATS_Europe it varies by state. Normally 53’ on single trailer length East of the Mississippi River and 61’ west of it. Doubles and triples are considerably longer. Tractor wheelbases can vary, the one I own has a 305” wheelbase, so I’m usually right around 80 feet long.
Growing up in Darwin, you would see these every day although the quads are relatively recent addition. Traditionally 3 x 40ft trailers + space between + pulling truck ~ 160ft. On a bicycle it was possible to slipstream at 70 or 80kmh - not always the safest thing to do! Before the tank farm was moved from central Darwin the road tankers would pull out in the morning along McMinn St and turn right on to the Daly St bridge - of course the lights were never long enough as it was an uphill climb and turn. And of course BVR applied to all other traffic (Big Vehicle Rule 🤣) I got my car licence at 16 through student driver education and started my apprenticeship with the local Cat dealer just before I was 17. Later that year the company got us to do our truck licence test - 1 day try on a 5t rigid Bedford (6 cylinder, 4 or 5 speed gearbox) and then the test a week later on the same truck. Drive from MVR (which was 100 metres from the workshop) into town, past Woolies and back to MVR. The the tester asked how old I was, I was 17 but had had my licence for more than 12 months. He said you have to be 18 to get a truck licence. Then he said it's only a few months and you're off P-plates. So there I was, 17 years old and legally I could drive a road train. In 1980 a truck licence meant ANY truck! In fact I've only driven a semi a couple of times, the main reason for the licence was to drive graders, loaders, and scrapers on the road.

Not a driver, but fascinated by Big Rigs from a child. These Australian Road Trains and Driver are uniquely impressive. But to drive that amount of tonnage on U.S. Highways (Interstates) would ruin the roadways after or before a year. Not to mention driving in a urban setting. It would be a complete nightmarish scenario. If it was even possible, anything is possible. Those types of vehicles to drive here would be restricted to hours from 10 pm to 6am due to traffic flow. Out in areas where roads travel least population like for example I-80 btw Reno, Nv and Salt Lake City, Ut i could see a road train type. Certain states like Nevada and Oklahoma, Oregon hauls Triples. But not to the tune like Australia.

You are right, i agree. 👍🏼
Thank you for your comment, i appreciate it. Have a nice day 😊

Dont know. Sorry
Do people ever need to reverse these or are runs organised so that reversing is never needed? Can you ever even reverse one and control the reverse?

One trailer had 84 wheels on it, I would loos my mind if I seen this doing 65 mph on the 5 south in LA.
LOL. Thanks for your comment, i really do appreciate it. Have a nice one 😊
I’m in Western Australia and regularly see Double Trailers on the Freeway going 110kph or 68mph.
@@julzhunt7790 Yea no I get that they can go faster than 65 mph. The emphasis I'm trying to get across is the location, ie Interstate 5 South.
@@julzhunt7790 Where in Western Australia can I find road trains? North of Perth?
@@TomasVarg I lived in the Perth Hills. Great Eastern Highway. I guess just about any main outer arterial road, North, South or East. If you wanna spot some I’d say contact a Trucking company or Mining company maybe?
