I love how raw and unpolished Adrenaline was. I actually got introduced to Deftones when Around the Fur came out and then had to go pick this one up, and I absolutely loved it. Definitely doesn't have the production value of the later stuff but it just has this gritty emotion that hits home.
Total time capsule for me, just remember riding my skateboard around with this on my discman. Such a vibe.

I think what separates deftones from normal nu-metal is that they never really chased popularity, never really chased radio plays, video plays and the like. They never played the popular festivals (from what I recall) like Korns Family Values shows, maybe not even Ozzfest, which was nu-metal wall to wall. Certainly the first couple of albums had 'hits' on them that had the similar influences to Korn, Limp Bizkit etc and they were kind of bullied into having a radio single (Back To School) by the label (Madonnas label I might add, they were first band to be signed by Madonna), but White Pony onwards they just went in their own direction.
They're like Radiohead or other bands that appeared as part of certain movements - deftones had the same influences as their peers but they manifested them in other directions, became popular on their terms and thrived.

They played Family Values in 2006 and Ozzfest in 99. They played Warped Tour numerous times which is pretty popular. Played Glastonbury, Pinkpop. Leeds and few others and still continue to get top billing or near at most festivals today

LA 90’s teen here 🙋🏻‍♀️ Boyle Heights born and raised. I experienced this scene first hand and let me tell you it was awesome! I wouldn’t trade it. As a teenager, we spent weekends going to shows in Hollywood. The Whiskey, The Troubadour, The Palladium…I saw so many of these Nu-Metal bands live multiple times, before they made it big and for some before name changes and appearance changes to find the aesthetic. A lot of them were starting out so they played the smaller clubs. Some of my fondest memories. 😊

Another underrated song from that early era of Deftones is ‘Teething’ which was a b-side recorded for adrenaline, and is on ‘The Crow- City of Angels soundtrack’ is a total banger if you like their more earlier aggro sound
Also on that soundtrack that’s another b-side track that was recorded during their self titled album is the song ‘Sean Olson’ by Korn
To me, is one of their heaviest and darkest songs that should have been released on that album is another underrated gem to check out!

It's California, but not LA. They're from Sacramento (closer to the Bay Area).
