    I remember Stephen in his garage finally getting a new guitar. He was just a poor South Sacramento kid like the rest of us that wanted to make music as a career. And he did. Out of all the poseur kids in the hood that gave him shit, he just blew it off and always had a smile and jokes. We rode BMX, skateboards and listened to music. Proud of that dude.

    Very interesting reaction from the guys. I kind of "skipped" this genre of music when it was happening for various reasons (musical and for other considerations at that time). So, I'm not going to pretend that I'm familiar with this group and, honestly, I hadn't gotten around to watching the other reactions on the channel for them. However, as someone that might be coming in with a little fresher view, I thought the instrumentation was very listenable (for the driving beat) and it seemed to me like the vocal arrangement was consciously done to juxtapose it with the instrumentation (until the end when, as Nick mentioned, the lead singer really let loose). There is a distinction that may need to be made. There was alternating talk about a band's first recorded song and the first song that appears on an album. As I'm sure many are aware, most bands or artists don't necessarily record songs in the order that they appear on an album (which is referred to as "track sequencing"). Nick made the astute point that the first song on an album can be significant for the listener, especially if they are not aware of the group or artist. So, one can consider that first song, especially on a first album, to be a "mission statement" ("This is who we are and how we want our music to sound") from the band or artist. When a listener goes through what is considered a "concept album" (where there is an overall message that should come through with the songs being pieces of that message; Fairly famous examples might be "Tommy" by The Who and "Dark Side of The Moon" by Pink Floyd), the track sequencing is very important for the album. For this purpose, think of each song on a concept album being like a chapter in a book and the book will likely make much less sense if the chapters are jumbled out of order, just like if the songs aren't in the right order of a concept album. My final thought is the guys hit on a really fascinating topic and that is the "evolution" of a band's or artist's sound over time. For example, consider the songs from the first few years of The Beatles (which the guys have done a couple of reactions for in the past) in comparison to the later music from the band. If someone didn't know better, they might think the changes were two different groups. One could look at the difference in the music from The Beach Boys during this same period as Brian Wilson's and the band's sound got seemingly more sophisticated over time. There have been a lot of bands and artists that have gotten pigeon-holed into having a "signature sound" and, if it is well-received and successful, it becomes what fans and record labels expect out of future music. Evolution in musical direction over time can create a lot of disagreements among group members or artists with their producers/record labels, along with disatisfaction from fans if they don't like the newer music. This is a really interesting topic for the guys to expand on in the future when comparing and contrasting older and later music from a band or artist, when appropriate, in later reaction videos. Great job by the guys and it's always terrific to see the full "502 crew" in effect. 😀

    • @chad9017
      @chad9017 8 месяцев назад +1

      I'm not a music aficionado but in the 70s very early 80s you could turn on the radio and expect to hear a rock song that had a meaning and a melody rather than I'm so sad repeat chorus. Singer screams Im so distraught and depressed and depressing. Repeat repeat chorus. Repeat. With few exceptions. I'm happy to have this argument though. I did like a couple by the Verve.

    • @chad9017
      @chad9017 8 месяцев назад +1

      That's about the sorriest argument I ever heard. Of course I base my opinions on what I like. It's music. There is this though. In the 70s rock music was practically outlawed. You know those bands believed in it. In the 80s all the music stations were bought by huge corporations. The same ones that bought the AM stations. For the most part there hasn't been real music since. Even the musicianship dropped significantly.
