In the manga it's implied Thorfinn and Askeladd had dueled before, plenty of times. In the anime they omit that. That's why Askeladd is familiar with Thorfinn's fighting style and knows just how to rile him up. It makes more sense why Thorfinn would stick around if he continuously gets fights with Askeladd. It doesn't make sense for Thorfinn to wait 10 years for one duel. In that time he could have visited his family and come back to Askeladd dozens if not hundreds of times. He's not going back to his family in order to not waste even a chance of beating Askeladd. But him not getting a duel in 10 years really makes no sense and it makes Thorfinn look really stupid.
Something of note, it's actually difficult for Thorfinn to remember much about his past outside of some names, a couple stories and his father's death. As it's been 10-11 years since he joined askeladd and he was only 6 at the time.

I think what happened was that Thorfinn was going for Askeladd's hand/fingers and Askeladd saw it coming so he let go of the sword (that's why Thorfinn ended up knocking it away) to grab Thorfinn
In the manga, Thofinn doesn't tell Hordaland about Vinland. It's just Hordaland wondering if there's a land of peace across the horizon while Thorfinn stays silent. In the anime however Hordaland is pessimistic and thinks no matter how far you go there's no peace anywhere. Here Thorfinn doesn't stay silent and tells her of Vinland, and describes it as a place of peace, with no slaves. So in the anime they're trying to make Thorfinn slightly more humane and likeable than he is in the manga in those chapters.

Easily one of the best anime from the Spring 2019 season, Kimetsu no Yaiba is an emotional story with great characters and a few surprising laughs along the way. Produced by the infamous ufotable, each episode is gorgeous to behold! This is one of the most beautifully crafted and intense shounen series we have seen in a while, and we wanted to point out just a few of the reasons why you should be keeping up with it this season. And if you don’t believe our points in the end, you can always give it a try anyway-the show speaks for itself! Everything about Kimetsu no Yaiba is beautifully done, from the character design to the soundtrack! While the clothing remains fairly traditional to the time period of the anime, each character has specific colors of clothing that stand out brightly. That is not to say that the background is drab either-even the black, white and gray colors seem more vibrant. The animation is quite fluid and realistic, with Tanjirou’s water-combat style being one of the most beautiful parts of the show. Character design can easily flow from serious and dramatic to a silly, more chibi look, which provides much-needed moments of relief in episodes. And we could go on forever about the music in Kimetsu no Yaiba, which punctuates the different moments in the series well! Kimetsu no Yaiba starts off right away with one of the most heart-wrenching tales. It does have its funny moments of comedic relief, but for the most part, this story retains its serious and tragic nature throughout. Tanjirou’s struggle to hold on to the family he has left is something we can all identify with, no matter if your family is one important person or twenty! Combining his emotional tale with that of other characters’ stories he meets along the way gives the anime a cohesive world for viewers to be a part of. This is also one of the few shounen we have seen thus far that does not seem to have the intention of including filler episodes, as it has been very focused on the narrative at hand. Some of the best series also have the most mysterious circumstances! Kimetsu no Yaiba has plenty left for us to learn about the world and the characters, with a ton of questions left unanswered. Of course, an anime would not be interesting unless it had some element of suspense to it! Kimetsu no Yaiba does well in this regard, allowing us to wonder about some elements of its setting while trying to provide answers to a few questions at a time. While Kimetsu no Yaiba is set in a specific older period of time in Japan, it embraces a few fantastical elements as well. The entire story revolves around Tanjirou’s quest to make his sister human again, and as such, he has a lot of contact with the supernatural. Yet the world feels grounded because of its roots in ancient Japan. The time period is reflected quite well in this adaptation, from the way that the characters dress to how they conduct their everyday lives. Kimetsu no Yaiba is one of the best anime airing this season, for its gorgeous animation, emotionally-gripping story and interesting characters. All of these elements combined make for a great series, and also make it recognizable as one of the best shounen anime we have seen this year!
