I found this video very helpful! I’ve been a mobile dj since 2002. I still do parties for $500 and weddings for $795. Im a dj at a bar this Friday and getting $200 the nice thing is I don’t have to bring my PA system. It’s great to hear what other djs make! I did a gig at at a bar/grill with my PA and lights for $170. I charge low at first just to get my foot in the door. Over the years I’ve found that bar/clubs can be a reliable source of work. Where a weddings is a word of mouth for me. It’s not a guarantee source of money/gig to stop my day job. Keep it up Barr love your channel!!!!
Very well said Barr. You are absolutely right. I've been at this a long time but need to charge more. This business is continuously changing. We have to learn and adapt. Thanks for the great tips and honest comments.
Something you said early on really resonated with me. Too many guys try to be the "everything" DJ. I figured out early on in my career (?) that I was TERRIBLE at school dances. I mean just rotten awful. But rather than lose out on the money, I have still managed to keep the clients. I have a pretty strong network of other DJs around me, and we ALL share gigs with each other. Of course, we're all good at weddings. We aren't allergic to money. But I have another DJ friend of mine that's great at school dances. On the flip side, he knows he's awful at 50th birthday parties. Being a classic rock guy, I'm GREAT at 50th birthday parties. But we all take a little from each gig just to keep it interesting. I don't comment a lot, but thanks for the work you do.
Nice rant. Pretty much agreed with everything. I don't know many full time DJ's. Most, as you stated, do it as a side love/hustle. The Dj's that make stupid money are also producers. They make music. I think the money maker for mobile cats is being a business owner with multi ops. That way you can do three weddings at once. Takes time to build and has to be a labor of love especially in the beginning. Multi op is the money maker if a six figure income is what you're after. A rich man once said "I'd rather get a small percentage of a hundred peoples efforts than 100% of my own". My 2 stupid cents.
Always insightful and entertaining. I'm a full time DJ, 10 years in the business, doing 80 weddings/year across the river from you. It's nice to see how you / Posh DJs do things, especially since I drive past that billboard all the time ;) Keep it up and many successes this season!
That actually goes for most musicians. I don't mind having a 9-5 M-F because I mostly DJ at night and weekends. If I get a gig in during those working hours, well I have tons vacation days. So I still get paid from that job, plus the DJ gig. Plus medical benefits! I see that a lot of musicians and DJ have bar or waiter jobs which suck! Work in something with day hours (no weekends) and benefits. Life is better that way. Plus I DJ my companies holiday parties! $$$$
Great video again Barr! I totally agree with specializing in particular events like Weddings, etc. And yes it's totally a weekend business which allows me to keep my current career as a public school teacher. I really find all your videos very informative and thank you for all that you do to help us in the dj business.
Barr...I love your post...Ive been DJing since 1986 part time....Your videos are appreciated...I served 22 years in the Army and when I retired I have been getting back in the game...There's all kinds of Haters...but I see the love you have for the craft...Its tough to put yourself out there and back in the day there wasn't alot of mentors teaching DJing or even the business side which is equally important as the art of DJing...Keep doing your thing...
Hard facts and 100% true. People consider me a full time DJ but the truth is I have multiple sources of income. I tutor, I repair equipment, I program DMX lighting and I'm an electrician hooking up distro's at the local dinner theater for touring acts and productions. I'm in the entertainment business and I love it. I've also lived by "it's not how much you make, it's how much you keep". Great video Barr
Great follow up video. I am new at this (less than a yr) and you have given so much valuable advice. You definitely help put things in the proper perspective especial with The Who cares section.Thank you so much. I really do appreciate it.
Right on Point I been all those DJ’s that how we get our experience now we are the 1,600 and up DJ Service, I still have a full time job we only do about 30 events per year but we don’t under sell our services like you said there is a market for everyone!!
@@djsergiubulgar4922 I've done Weddings before. Wedding are stressful.. like Barr said those events are once in a lifetime event if you mess up one it's all you..
I honestly loved hearing what you had to say about DJ-ing for side money vs. as a living. It’s making me reconsider my pricing for rentals and DJ services. Like, how serious am I about this? Great video.
Good point B. Theres alot of Djs here in Cali where I live and theres so many of them charging dirt cheap. Cheap Equipment, cheap prices and the skills suck. So Im always up to date on everything. I have 4 sites that I market my business and Im always looking for new ways to improve my business. I don't Dj full time because I have another business to run. When I first started in 85 I did alot of gigs for free and had to go by referrals. Now everything is on the internet now.
Bayardo, great stuff and not stepping on your toes, just want to say this to all the DJ's in comment section saying they're getting all these low paying gigs. 1- Network your ass off (In order to increase ones NET-WORTH, you must NET-WORK!) 2- Never leave your house without at least 10 business cards (Don't have any? Hit up a site like Vistaprint.com) 3- Learn how to properly market, promote and advertise your business (The day you stop learning is the day you die) and 4- Invest wisely over investing the coolest must have gear (What good is having a mixer that is as much as a mortgage payment and you're not getting a return on your investment). Apply these 4 tips and watch how a quantity of gigs, becomes quality paying gigs.
I just wanted to chime in on this. I own a multi-op company and we don't quite charge 2350 or even $2000 for a wedding. We charge barely half that and most DJs frown upon us being "cheaper". I honestly do make 6 figures and yes much of it goes to expenses. We charge well under 1,000 for parties but we do 500 events a year and having other guys do the work and you pocket the booking fees and rent out the gear does make a lot of money. Solo full time guys definitely make 40-60 grand a year and you're right on that. I feel bad that multi-ops get a lot of crap about the under cutting but if we do 10 events in a week at 300-500 per party we're turning a profit instead of one event for $2000. Good video and maybe brides and grooms need to see that breakdown LOL
Great video Barr! I have also been all of those djs. I am in South Jersey and my prices fluctuate alot... but like gear in the Warehouse, if I'm not working im not making money so I will take jobs for less as the dates get closer. Keep up the great vids!
Excellent video sir!! I love the information and insight you provided. I also saw part I of this video that was great as well. I am still trying to get my DJ services off the ground and I want to mainly do weddings. I did a wedding back on December 21st , 2019 and that was mainly through friends of my wife, but it was still a great experience!! I think I may start hosting my own events to get my name out there more and I feel better about not charging for them because you made a great point about charging for lifetime events versus other types of events such as birthdays. I can demonstrate what I can bring to a party by just doing my own showcase. Keep up the great posts my man!! God bless you and God Bless the United States of America!! :-)
I charge $100/hour at 4 hour min., for just being a DJ or sound engineer. If you want me to bring any equipment other than my laptop and headphones, that's when the prices go up. If I DJ for a music artist performance then it's $150 per set plus $50 for rehearsals.
Friday -Sunday I’m a flat rate regardless of the event. Those days are prime rate. You’ll get to the point where you do more corporate during the week. There also has to be those popular venues in your area that do weddings 5 days a week. I believe you’ll get into those places
Fun gig, lots of work, so I kept my dayjob. Do a couple small gigs and events for fun. Not setup to do big gigs. It would be a big pay cut to DJ full time. Only had 7 events last year and they were all productions, not a DJ. Brought the controller for the ability to play requests between live acts and bands. Did not want to attempt to steal the show. Just played the intermissions.
I'm from across the water (England) you are so right about what you say over here we earn a lot less (unless you're a multi op) and it's hard but I always say never give and I am a single Op I love this job and full time!!!
I had over $14,000 in just expenses in 2018. Advertising, Equipment expenditures, Website, Insurance, Office Supplies etc. Most DJs will walk with less than $25,000 for the year. Many only end up with 10K or less for the year. A very small group will earn over 60K for the year.
Spoken like a true professional. I agree about focusing on a certain market but there is no reason why DJs can't specialalize in at least the big 2. For us in the Northeast that would be Weddings and Mitzvahs or Sweet 16. It's the only way to bring the Net profit over 100k +.
Dude you make good points, now i still consider my self a intro dj why? Because i have other things to do but, when i have time to spare im in my controller trying to master the technique of mixing all types of music. And of course im in the $200-400 ish range when clients want to hire me for their parties or important events because i have experience and i also mess up at small gigs
I think production is the way to go personally, you can charge a hell of a lot and when it comes to bigger events it just gets insane. The only issue is the initial cost of the gear. Rentals is also a good way of making money
There are some people and there a people that because of you and every other dj. We enter in this business after being in the bethroom for a time. You always talk you're experience and with your heart. Other talk to talk and don't even show you nothing. That why you are in the top and keep climbing and other wash. Keep the good work. 4 dj barr 🎤🎼🎧🎶
Another insightful video DjBarr.. good job... Lot of people nowadays will pick quantity over quality....what I mean by that is there's a lot of quantity in the DJ business out there nowadays that will do the $400 weddings (total) so their options are a lot more than it used to be 15 years ago or so.. DJ's coming out of the woodwork right now.... but unfortunately sad but true they never figure it out that they get what they pay for till the end...
I like the WHO CARES!!! part,...I started djing at the age of 15yrs old,...but got onto a semi okay not Pro level at about age 25 I am now 48 and can say I am Pro but it doesn't mean I am better than the other dj that is djing in the next ballroom...nope all djs are different and have there own style, equipment, music, and of course clientele...either low end paying or mid or high end paying level...so yeah we are all not alike in a sense...keep doing you BARR make that money and like you said WHO CARES!!! go dj
Hi, I like your outlook on the Biz., the info is good, we seem to follow the same ideas on gigs, good solid party. I find some DJ's worry more about the money and not the young couple asking you to give them a wonderful wedding day. My partner was following Ricky Webb, what a cocky schmucks he is. I will continue to follow you. We run part time, so I don't see us getting into the Utube thing. Have a great day. Ed Iron Beats Entertainment, Nashua, NH
Net and gross is SOOOO big. people has to understand. I am a part time DJ (trying to go more full time this year) , got over 3000 in Funds to me . i got maybe $150 in net. the rest went to equipment, and up lighting, DMX etc.
Wow, I didn't know DJ BARR made $750,000 a year lives in Alpine New Jersey and had a BMW and Ferrari I am going to start DJing in March #bigballer #superstardj #djlife #LMG #90210 #07620
people now a days figure why should i pay a dj more then $100 when i can buy a Bluetooth speaker for same price 100 at sams ,costco or down town with the Chinese stores 2nd hand stores or swap meets and keep it? Bluetooth speaker have scam the people to believe they sound good and its all they need but they realize they don't sound good and worst that it don't come with a light show or they are stuck next to the speaker in changing people music request and they don't have a good night
What I really want to know, is your RUclips Channel monetized? If Yes, how much do you make from your RUclips Channel, it can be a ballpark figure. I am a Part Time DJ, I make more money at my corporate job than if I would to be a Full Time DJ. What about Multi-Ops like Posh, how much do they pull in each year, and how much does Posh pay a DJ for a 4 Hour Wedding? I like to know I have options if I decide to DJ Full Time or start a multi op in the future.
You not kidding about the stupid factor. Also... Your time is valuable. The extras set you apart and you should always be working to improve yourself too, so they have to go with you because you are not like the next guy. IMO anyone that complains about loosing to the cheap guy is prob not spending enough time to make themselves look like they are worth it. I look at you and you are first class all the way down to your suit. Clients that are paying big bucks want to feel like they are getting what they pay for. In my market, brides ask about backup systems a lot. The fact that I started as a sound co and have inventory of equipment speaks volumes and I always carry 3 ways to make music so they feel secure that the music won’t stop. So if your out partying in your spare time and not spending time working on your own biz you really have no one to blame but the guy in the mirror. That’s my 2 cents and we’ll spoken DJB!
Hi Bayardo I hope this doesn't seem like a stupid question but I believe from watching your videos that you would do a lot more gigs then 40 a year. I have often seen you document weekends where you have played 2 or 3 gigs in a weekend. Great video by the way!

Spoken like a true professional. I agree about focusing on a certain market but there is no reason why DJs can't specialalize in at least the big 2. For us in the Northeast that would be Weddings and Mitzvahs or Sweet 16. It's the only way to bring the Net profit over 100k +.
Nice Barr, thanks for keeping it real
Great video as always...keepin' it real, yo!
Only thing I can say is PERFECT VID. Thanks again Barr 👍🏽
People don’t know much about pricing. My sister’s wedding we had a dj that we maxed out the package coming down to $2,500
Barr, this was a great vLog you did, thank you for the insight!!!!
Prices in Croatia for a packet 2350 is about 1800.Great video
Phenomenal video my brother! Really informative. Thank you for stating the facts 💯🙌🏽
great video brotha !!!
I like the WHO CARES!!! part,...I started djing at the age of 15yrs old,...but got onto a semi okay not Pro level at about age 25 I am now 48 and can say I am Pro but it doesn't mean I am better than the other dj that is djing in the next ballroom...nope all djs are different and have there own style, equipment, music, and of course clientele...either low end paying or mid or high end paying level...so yeah we are all not alike in a sense...keep doing you BARR make that money and like you said WHO CARES!!! go dj
Good job dj Barr great video.
A la carte, I like it. I was thinking about making packages but I enjoy offering my prices the same way! More flexibility on their part I think
You're absolutely right. It's the same thing in Germany. Greetings to USA.
Excellent video! You’re incredible!
Well done. You made it easy to understand.
I have found a DJ who I can respect! A lot of truth was told! Do encourage all the watchers to please please please just watch and learn from this.
Great video brotha! Saludos from Dj Flex 💪🏽
Thanks bro for the advice👍 Bula vinaka from the Fiji Islands.
Great Video! So good! I agree on alot what you said.
Great Video. On point

Net and gross is SOOOO big. people has to understand. I am a part time DJ (trying to go more full time this year) , got over 3000 in Funds to me . i got maybe $150 in net. the rest went to equipment, and up lighting, DMX etc.
Very Informative thank you
Who saw and appreciated the tl:dr right away? Then stayed for the rest because, Barr.
I’m with you on this phone one, every time I finish a wedding I end up with like 200 dollars if I’m lucky after all my expenses 😂
Nailed it. Great info 👍
Good video bro. I support!
American DJ’s are VERY expensive compared to here in the UK
In UK people think £250 to much for DJ to private party and weddings in UK djs get somewhere in £300 upward.
Love it Bro thanks
Wow, I didn't know DJ BARR made $750,000 a year lives in Alpine New Jersey and had a BMW and Ferrari I am going to start DJing in March #bigballer #superstardj #djlife #LMG #90210 #07620
“You’re” rich (grammar) much love bro! Great video 🤙🏾
Lmao missed that!
The realest video
people now a days figure why should i pay a dj more then $100 when i can buy a Bluetooth speaker for same price 100 at sams ,costco or down town with the Chinese stores 2nd hand stores or swap meets and keep it? Bluetooth speaker have scam the people to believe they sound good and its all they need but they realize they don't sound good and worst that it don't come with a light show or they are stuck next to the speaker in changing people music request and they don't have a good night
Solid advice and thx
I agree, with every point made in this video
What I really want to know, is your RUclips Channel monetized? If Yes, how much do you make from your RUclips Channel, it can be a ballpark figure. I am a Part Time DJ, I make more money at my corporate job than if I would to be a Full Time DJ. What about Multi-Ops like Posh, how much do they pull in each year, and how much does Posh pay a DJ for a 4 Hour Wedding? I like to know I have options if I decide to DJ Full Time or start a multi op in the future.
Good video thanks
5:50 sums it up. Agree.
Good job DJ Barr!! Also not mentioned as a full time DJ... Health insurance and retirement.
Great video, speaking the truth
Thanks for this, this helps
Very informative!
yes keep it real love it
This is why I never wanted to turn a love for this hobby into a business. The payout isn't all that great. Hope your business takes off Barr!
Hi Bayardo I hope this doesn't seem like a stupid question but I believe from watching your videos that you would do a lot more gigs then 40 a year. I have often seen you document weekends where you have played 2 or 3 gigs in a weekend. Great video by the way!
I was just using rough numbers, these are not my numbers.
@@BayardoRugama I do 90 plus gigs a year that is the only way i can make good money in this industry
Awesome video.. thanks
