To be exact, it is not a Kabuki mask. Kabuki does make-up.
This is Noh mask (called 能面"Noh-men" in Japanese).
Noh(能) is also one of the traditional Japanese performing arts.

  • @SebGerryfield

It's funny, that your daughter mentioned Vocaloid and had know idea who she's dealing with, because the Wagakki Band actually started as a Vocaloid cover band. Their biggest success "Senbonzakura" is originally a Hatsune Miku song. And asa, the bassist, wrote the song "Yoshiwara Lament", which is sung by Kasane Teto (your daughter should know about her), before he joined the Wagakki Band. The second part of the bass solo is actually the main melody of that song. The band still regularly covers vocaloid songs, which is very impressive since they are sung very, very fast sometimes.

Yuko is the singer, and she also is the founder of this band. She is a traditional Japanese opera star and she brings this talent and sounds to this music. You will also notice it in her "fan dance." She is also a master of the katana (Japanese sword) and will on occasion bring that to her performances. I would recommend that you listen to their performance in the "Overture / Premium Symphonic Night Volume 2" to truly understand the beauty of her voice. All these musicians are first rate and even teachers of their craft at universities.

The plectrum the shamisen player is using isn't something she came up with for their show. It is ancient and traditional. It is at least as traditional as geishas playing with a fan. The geisha was trying to be graceful, intriguing and soothing all at once.
But for street musicians for example, the shamisen was played in a more energetic style to grab the attention and hopefully contributions of passersby. They used a plectrum specific to that purpose called a bachi to produce brighter, sharper sounds. As it is here.

Not quite the same mashup, but there's a group called Wagaku led by Kineiei Nami that puts a modern vibe into straight up traditional instruments. They do a couple neat vocaloid covers with Kyounosuke, Senbonzakura and Bad Apple. Also, a neat Sailor Moon music suite. Worth a listen, if not intense enough for a reaction video.

Actually, this is not a Kabuki mask. Kabuki theater actors never wore masks, they uses a heavy makeup instead. This is a Nō theater mask. By the way, Shamisen is not a traditional japanese instrument. Originally It's based on a chinese instrument called SianXian ("three strings") that was introduced in the Ryukyu Kingdom (modern day Okinawa prefecture) around the XIV century and extensively modified by ryukyuan luthiers to make it louder and capable of hand-picking playing. Ryukyuans also called it Sanshen ("three strings" in ryukyuan japonic). In the XVI century, during an official visit of the Ryukyu King to meet japanese Daimyo of the Satsuma clan, king's court musicians played Sanshen for the Daimyo. Japaneses immediatelly falled in love with this instrument and added it to Daimyo's court ensemble, with the prohibition of sharing it with non aristocratic people. Japaneses modified it once more, changing it's original pythons-leather top to an goat (or dog or cat) furs top, and developed this triangular pick called "bachi" to simultaneously picking strings and hiting its drum like top exploiting it's percusive features. So, they never tried to play it with a fan. A servant of one these luthiers' (who was also an accomplished craftsman) secretely build some Sanshen and sold them to farmers. This instrument rapidly spread thru the working class masses. Finally, during the Meiji restoration, imperial authorities moved its name to Shamisen to avoid references to its non-japanese origin.
I apologize for may bad English.
    Greetings from the Southern Cross!

It doesn't really have anything to do with your video, except for one of your first sentences, but One OK Rock is meant as "One O'Clock" if I'm not mistaken. It's a "wordplay" for a lack of a better word. The Japanese don't differentiate between L and R. There's no L in their alphabets, only Ra, Ri, Ru, Re, Ro letters/characters. It's the same with B and V for example. It would always be Ba, Bi, Bu, Be, Bo instead of V. Best example for both cases, "believe" would written and pronounced like beriibu or ベリーブ
