    To Steve Perry, I am really glad that you talked Jonathan Cain into finishing that song. (Open Arms) It is one of my all time favorites and is timeless. Glad you ignored Neal.

    I love Neal and Johnathan but Steve gave New birth to Journey. I don't care who they get to take Steve place they'll never be Steve
    Also no body talks about Steve Smith. He's awesome. Best drummer I've ever heard.

      I took my son who took drum lessons as a kid, to one of Steve’s drum clinics.
      I got to stand next to him with no one else by him and talk for a few minutes.
      He was so nice
      He was a good teacher

    It's funny to hear Neal Schon saying how much he loves all the songs since apparently he absolutely hated everything about 'Open Arms'. Looking at all the different interviews I can't help but think that Neal always had some love/hate feelings for Steve Perry. They didn't want him in the band but then they needed him because he got them on the charts and I think he always resented that someone else made the band more successful than he ever could have on his own.

      100% thats why he looked for a replacement when Steve was unsure about undergoing a surgery to prove to Steve that he didnt need him but no one ever did as good as Steve

    Just because Steve and Neal disagreed about a song doesn't mean it was cuz of a strained relationship. At least not at THAT time. Band members always have different opinions about band decisions. And Neal in later interviews openly admits he was leary about the song until they played it on stage and it was a hit. So Idk why ppl are trying to make something of this.

    • @cbotten106
      @cbotten106 3 месяца назад

      Neal hated the sappy ballads with no juicy guitar solos. Of course, the fact that Neal and Steve wrote Patiently together as their first song might make you think it was less a ballad thing and more of "Where's mine?", as in guitar solo action, in Open Arms.

    For the record, the Journey -Live in Houston DVD-CD, is where this "bonus" footage, is from. When I purchased it back in '05, I was quite amused and still am today. Being a working Musician and very much inspired by the 5 individuals that make-up JOURNEY, I realize that things get very complicated when a band achieves this type of success. And EVERY (working) Musician desires this success. And It is ever elusive. Things only get more complicated at this level. After all the work put in to achieve it, the camaraderie starts to "wane" and EVERYBODY thinks, "it about them!" Nevermind ALL the lives you are "TOUCHING" and the difference you make in music, it becomes selfish and petty. Especially when, they all start getting financially secure.

    happycat328, I agree wholeheartedly with you. Neal Schon has always had such a large ego. Its really sad though, because his ego was, and still is the one thing keeping him from achieving the greatness that Steve Perry achieved.

    Without Steve Perry, the band touring as "Journey" is just a cover band. The new guy tries but he can't hit or hold the notes.

      He shaved all the facial hair. I think it always makes men look older.

      Same thing with, Neil Peart. In the 70s, Neil had the facial hair, as well. The ever impressive mustache and long hair. 80s roll around, all of that was gone and he looked younger.

    Very interesting. Thanks for sharing. This is enlightening. Steve sounded bitter in this. Althugh he did not like to do interviews period (he sounded forced do this one). It was apparent he hated traveling. His comments about being on the road were much more negative as opposed to comments from Steve Smith.. Also, you could tell the relationship with Neal was marginal (when talking about writing Open Arms).

    • @davidawilliams8603
      @davidawilliams8603 6 лет назад +5

      Matt Clark ...well not true sir. Bitter? Hmm. Why? That would only happen if someone did you wrong. He is a realist who approaches the interview with a lot of clarity and focus and seriousness. ☺

    I sure agree with that. And for Neal to have any jealousy whatsoever about anyone with his gift on the guitar is just so obnoxious. I mean this guy should be on Rolling Stone Top 100 guitarists but he is not. Personality maybe?

    This was the OFFICIAL Journey band member lineup because what they have now sucks. That dude from Philipines...What's his name, Arse Pineapple something, something...doesn't fit in at all. I'm a longtime Journey fan from Vietnam and I CANNOT stand that goofball. THE MAGIC IS GONE WHEN PERRT LEFT!!!

  • @sugarpear7557
    @sugarpear7557 7 лет назад +2

    Herbie actually said that Neal and Jon gave Steve a hard time while recording Open Arms. YES, JON CAIN - Who wrote the melody line for the freaking song - WAS MAKING FUN OF STEVE WHILE HE WAS RECORDING THE VOCALS. How stupid was that? Even Herbie thought so. This band, while they are all creative geniuses, were filled with neurotic egomaniacs! YES, ALL OF THEM! Including Steve Perry - who I love, and still believe is the hottest thing to happen to Rock music - but yeah, him, too. He's pretty nuts! TBH, of all of them, the sanest one is NEAL SCHON. He comes across as a tyrannosaurus rex because he's loud, he's very vocal, but he's the SANEST ONE. Steve Perry had issues, Cain had issues, Ross had issues, Smith probably comes second as the sane one. Neal Schon, surprisingly was sane!

    • @synthonaplinth5980
      @synthonaplinth5980 5 лет назад +3

      Gregg was the sanest one. He got out of the band before things got bad.

  • @lindadannis224
    @lindadannis224 5 лет назад +3

    Always thought Ross was a non entity. Any one could have played his bass. He was not important to the band. And as much as he thinks he is...he’s not funny or cute!

  • @1danrobbins
    @1danrobbins 14 лет назад +2

    Steve looked so cute, Steve is the best, yeah, yeah. It is too bad he is so pompous and self-centered. Journey reached heights exceeded by few bands in their era and, undoubtedly, Perry's voice was one of the driving forces behind their success. But a band is just that, a group of musicians and anyone who has followed them knows his ego was larger than the band in a whole and eventually drove a wedge between him and his mates. In a group of large egos, Perry's, sorrily, lead to his demise.

    • @davidawilliams8603
      @davidawilliams8603 8 лет назад +15

      not true. they are all at fault. Steve admitted that fame changed him and will change anyone. so he really tried to stay true to himself. That is one of the many reasons why he is so well respected, loved but most important LIKED in the industry and family and friends.
