- Опубликовано: 25 июл 2024
- Hey #TheatreThursdayFam 🎉💕🎭 it's ya gurl, Kath with a list of the TOP 5 BROADWAY COMPOSERS all actors, theatre kids, and Broadway aficionados should know!
QUESTION OF THE DAY: Who is YOUR favorite musical theatre composer? Make sure to comment your answer down below!
A lot of you guys have been wanting to know how I learned so much about theatre (and what kind of study tips you can borrow!). This is my absolute favorite way!! I'll choose a composer and look at every single musical they've created the music for. When I find one I don't know, I'll look up the synopsis and listen to the score!
So in this vid, I'll talk about the most important (in my opinion) composers to know about. I'll mention a few of their Broadway shows, a bit of backstory about the composer, what their music sounds like, ways to distinguish their works, plus a little hot gossip about the future of Broadway.....so it's basically a crash course in composing!
So, what do you guys think of this style of video?! I'm really excited to hear what you guys have to say...let me know in the comments if you want more stuff like this!

can you do a entire video of sondhiem?
Sondheim forever and ever (after)
Alma L yes! Sondheim is witty and serious, I am so in awe of how clever he is
I really wish you would have included Jeanine Tesori. She's my favorite Broadway composer and she is the most successful female Broadway composer of all time. She's composed shows such as Fun Home, Violet, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Shrek the Musical and Caroline or Change. She's really important to me because of how underrepresented women are in the Broadway community, and she really is an incredible female role model.
this was just vol. 1 😉 Jeanine Tesori is brilliant!!
my favorite musical theatre composer would have to be william finn. i mean c'mon, he wrote falsettos and a new brain. my other favorite is jonathan larson but we all love him tbh.
AND PASEK AND PAUL OMG I LOVE
stevie's anatomy ooh I love William Finn!! SPELLING BEE is one of my faves and I really like what I've been able to find from LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE
stevie's anatomy William Finn is literally my favorite composer ever. Falsettos, In Trousers, and A New Brain are fantastic.
Same! Willian Finn will like always be my favourite. Mostly because he wrote a song about blowjobs. (Whizzer Going Down in In Trousers)
kath schulz yess I was looking for this comment
Personally speaking, my favourite has to be Stephen Schwartz, whom you may know from Wicked, Pippin, Rags and The Prince of Egypt. He also contributed to The Hunchback of Natre Dame, Pocahontas and Enchanted. I just love how big and dramatic his music sounds.
Olivia Mac Arthur YES!!! "Meadowlark" (especially when Liz Calloway performs it) is absolute gold 💕
YES His partnership with Alan Menken for Hunchback of Notre Dame is perfect, one of my favorite shows (the bootleg is online lol)
ugh prince of egypt is fantastic
He is probably my favorite. I've fallen in love with his works
Alan Menken. Alan Menken. (Disney theatre geek. I literally lead the Disney theatre club on Disney Amino)
(Also, in under two weeks I see my first Broadway show yeeeeettt.)
I love watching you geek out about musical, I can relate
swag daddy 😂😂
i'm waiting for how many people are going to say lin manuel miranda
I'm willing to wait for it..
dari r. I JUST REALIZED WHO YOU ARE
Olivia Grace who am i what?
ohmygosh LOL yes i'm hamilclips😂 you're not being creepy lol!!
Lin is the reason why I live 👌🏻 There are still other great composers out there though but I prefer more modern composers that write about old events. That's probably why I love heathers as well
One of my favourites is Claude-Michel Schönberg as he composed (with Alain Boublil) two of my favourite shows, Miss Saigon and Les Mis. I think Les Mis is so well done and all the songs and themes fit in with each other perfectly (hence why I can't stop seeing it and listening to it) so that's why he's my favourite.
Victoria Pontmercy yes!!! (They were very close to making the list) Have you listened to PIRATE QUEEN? If you're a big Hadley Fraser/Stephanie J Block fan, (like me) 10/10 would recommend checking it out ❤
Katherine Steele Yes!!! The bakers wife is one of my alltime favourite musicals!
Katherine Steele PIRATE QUEEN IS A HIDDEN GEM OH MY LORD
Yes! Les Miz and Miss Saigon are amazing!!!
William Finn. from spelling bee to falsettos his work will always be catchy, amazing, and gorgeous. But as a Broadway nerd I can't not love Sondheim
Has to be Alan Menken for me! The little shop of horrors soundtrack will always be my favourite 💖
PLEASE DO AN ENTIRE VIDEO ABOUT SONDHEIM
Very stereotypical but.. Linnamon roll
My favorites are Sondheim, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lin Manuel Miranda (sterotypical but he's soo good), Jonathan Larson and William Finn (with honorable mention to Stephen Schwartz bc Medalowlark is beautiful) but the list tends to change literally all the time
I related to you on a spiritual level when you mentioned the internet and being a loser in middle school (and high school now) on knowing so many musical theatre songs and composers XD I tell myself I'm unique and cool for singing songs from "Merrily We Roll Along" out loud though I know I'm just trying to reassure myself that I am a normal, sane teenager XD
Stephen Sondheim, Rogers and Hammerstein, William Finn, Jeanine Tesori, Jason Robert Brown, and Kander and Ebb. They're all such beautiful writers.
JRB.......a very brilliant man.
Jonathan Larson. Jonathan Larson will forever be the best.
Molly Rose He sadly died too young 😢
❤️🕯
Molly Rose yeeees Jonathan larson omg !!!😿😿
RIP ❤️
Yes! I was talking with my BF today and he asked if I could go anywhere in the world in history, and I said I would go to NYC in the nineties and SAVE JONATHAN LARSON! RENT is my favorite musical EVER and I love the music from Tick Tick Boom. I KNOW he had more in him.
However...we got into a Philosophical problem I need debated: If Jonathan Larson had lived, would RENT have gotten as big as it did?
I am currently a loser in middle school! Lol love you Katherine!!!💖🌸
Sondheim and Dave Malloy, their music never gets old, every time I hear their work I find something new.
Can't help but say that I love all composers basically.... 😂 just whatever musical you throw at me, I'll become obsessed one way or another 🌸
I really like a lot of the work that Cole Porter did in the 1930's.
1. Alan Menken 2. Rodgers and Hammerstein 3. Pasek and Paul 4. Irving Berlin 5. Lerner and Lowe
I enjoyed this type of video. Would you do a video on your top 10 musicals?
Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz are some of my faves. Wicked, Hunchback the Musical (which gets me emotional af), Newsies, all of the Disney, and ik it's a movie but Prince of Egypt are all amazing! I always recommend Hunchback and Prince of Egypt to my friends because those two I think are really great examples of their genius and they're so beautiful and the music is moving and UGH! so many great things I loooove them.
Thank you for putting Alan Menken on the list! Thanks to all the movies he scored, I grew up with musical theater as a natural way of storytelling; I actually remember how jarring it felt to see my first non-Disney, non-musical movie--"Wait, why isn't everybody singing?"
Alan Menken is the reason I got involved in theater. I actually had the great pleasure of seeing him live in concert a few weeks ago and it was an absolute joy.
I love these videos! I love learning more about Broadway and your opinions!!
Tbh I'm not the biggest Webber fan but I'll always respect his work. And JRB is the real MVP because 13 was one of the first musicals I truly completely fell in love with. And this is going to be the most mainstream thing I have ever said but honestly Lin Manuel Miranda has become one of my favorites not even completely for Hamilton but I'm in love with in the heights and bring it on is underrated in my opinion
LOVE THIS VIDEO!!!!!!! all of your videos are perfect so I mean I'm always very happy with them
I love these sort of videos! They're fascinating, and I'm learning a ton from you!
I love these types of videos! It's super educational and it's also fun to geek out with you! You should totally do more videos like this!
I LOVE this type of video! Great Job Katherine!

I'm a huge Pasek and Paul fan!!!!
I LOVE watching you geek over Musical Theatre stuff. It makes me feel like I'm at a sleepover with you and we're just having a good time talking about the stuff we love
Yes! Please do more of this kind of video! I love them
Hey, Kath! I'm a new subscriber & I've been going through all of your Theatre Thursday videos. I just wanted to say that I think you're very charming & your passion for theatre really shines through.
Also I'm so so glad you included Alan Menken on your list. He is my favorite composer and I feel like even as much as he's done in the theatre world he's overlooked a lot. So thank you for recognizing his work!
+Gigi Gervais oh my goodness, GIGI!!!! Thank you so much!! That is so sweet, thank you! I'm so happy that you're part of our #TheatreThursdayFam 🎉💕🎭 and YAY ALAN MENKEN!!
I reallly enjoyed this video! I really love musicals and listen to broadway show tunes aaalll the time but I never really looked up who is behind all of my fav musicals, so this was very informative :D
Rodgers + Hammerstein musicals have always been my favorite. The music is so pure and the lyrics are genius, and i use to think the shows were so cheesy when i first got into theatre but as a growing actress i can't help but find myself listening to one of their shows everyday.
I really love the added facts and information. Yes to EduTainment 👍🏼😊
I seriously can't decide in what order to watch your videos cause I'm binging them ALL I love you omfg 😂💗
I was lucky enough to play second violin in a local production of Bridges of. Addison county last spring, and the music was incredibly gorgeous. This week I’ve been obsessed with The Last Five Years and I’m absolutely in love. The score is so lush and I’d love to play second violin for that too. The story and singing are also incredible
Ive been bingeing all your videos, and just when I thought I was done for the day you upload a new one! Perfect timing!
Natasha Reitsma omg 😂❤🦄🙌🏻
Yay love theater Thursday. You always make my Thursday's 10 times better. Especially after my horrible rehearsal today 😂
All of the above + Pasek & Paul. I was OBSESSED with finding videos of "Edges" when I was younger. 👌🏽👌🏽
YES PLS! definitely more videos on edutainment!!
Honestly am in LOVE with this video. I already unknowingly chose a Sondheim song to sing for my "Sweeney Todd" audition next year. I love how I chose one of his songs to sing for an audition without knowing he composed both. That just shows the connection between the musicals.
This video is one of my favorites that you’ve ever made! I’m a big fan of history
Love these kind of vids!!! 💗 Unfortunately, it's not super easy to get ahold of theatre knowledge where I live, but thanks to the internet and your channel I've been open to so much more. Thank you for always making quality content✨💓
Also omg I love Sondheim, JRB and Leonard Berstein 💓
Hey Kath! Just wanted to say that I love your videos. Although I don't plan on doing professional theater, your videos have taught me so much about theater and I now have a greater understanding and respect for theater performers. Plus, your videos always manage to put a smile on my face! Thank you! :)
+Keeley Thomas oh my goodness, KEELEY!!!! You are too sweet, thank you! ❤❤

+Chatelaine Lambert YES WELCOME TO THE L5Y CULT 🖤😈
The fact you mentioned Passion in the Sondheim bit brings me (Marin Mazzie voice) sO MUCH HAPPINESSSSSS
Mine will forever be Menken. Disney was my start to loving music and theatre.

Love you kat great vid
this video was already relatable within the first 20 seconds... god i love this
I love Weber, R&H, and Kander & Ebb. Also, love the top picks videos!!!
Omg yes PLEASE make more of these I like the educational videos :)
Sondheim (i know it’s basic) I love how the orchestrations of his music are so representative of characters emotions and mental sanity. There’s so much to pick apart in his music
I am so glad I found this channel, it's nice to know I'm not the only obsessed theatre nerd :)
Yay!! Welcome to the #TheatreThursdayFam 🎉💕🎭
Yes please do more of these educational/ informational videos!
SONDHEIM AND ALW!!!! I can't believe I just found your channel. This will help me a lot in college. And also... SONDHEIM AND ALW
I would love, looove to read your paper about Sondheim (or you doing a video about him)! I've read like everything about him I could get my hands on..
I really enjoy this kind of content! I think you should take inspiration from Sarah Snitch's 'Down to Dis-ness' series and Jonah's Almost Famous' Musical of the Month, and discuss the history, characters and themes, etc. of a show. I would adore it! Also, English Theatre Thursday fam represent! Xx
Cinderella was my first show that I saw live at 10. I love Rodgers and Hammerstein so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also Andrew Lloyd Weber, and Lin Manuel Miranda, Alan Menken, and Sondheim. I frieken love Broadway too much.
also even though i'm ALSO a broadway encyclopedia, i do enjoy these videos and think you should make more :)
I'm a Sondheim fan through and through tbh. Also, please do more edu-tainment videos! Those are the best kind
I know this a bit late but I LOVE learning more about MT and its history, as I'm preparing to audition for colleges I'd really like to learn as much as I can and it would be great if you could make more videos like this ☺️💜
i mean and pasek and paul are on their way to becoming household names in musical theatre and it makes me so happy for them to get so much recognition
Oh. my. GOSH! HOW have I not discovered The Last Five Years before this?!?!?! Once you said a movie version was on Netflix (with Jeremy Jordan and Anna Kendrick no less!!!) I went and watched all of it and I’m completely in love. God bless this channel I’m discovering a bunch of musicals I’ve never heard before and learning all about the broadway scene. Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!
AH YAY!!! I'm so happy to hear that!!
All the composers you talked about are my favs! Also Schwartz bc wicked was my childhood and I love pippin and Godspell
I went on a disney cruise last year and got to see their stage version of tangled and it was absolutely amazing
Even though his shows often don't do well I absolutely love Frank Wildhorn scores Scarlet Pimpernel, Jekyll & Hyde and Wonderland have some of my all time favorite numbers . . . especially villain songs. I was so happy to see he had finally composed for a show that gave us a big female villain so that he finally wrote one of those big belt-y songs for my vocal range :D Seriously if you haven't heard I Will Prevail from Wonderland, go listen to it. It's so much fun!
Girl, you are so informative and fun! This was such a great video. I'm a new subscriber, but I am absolutely loving your videos. One of my new favourite youtubers, for sure!!!
+Sophie R AAAH thanks Sophie! Welcome to the #TheatreThursdayFam 🎉💕🎭
Ahh loved this video so much Kat!! Instantly puts me in a good mood ☺️ Quick question- what lipstick are you wearing here? It's gorgeous! I'm always looking for things to improve my heather chandler aesthetic 😘
I love how passionate you are x
+Hannah Clarke thank you!! 💖 it's easy when it's something this fun xx
We actually did a concert in my town based on Rogers and Hammerstein and it was so good, I found some shows that I had never actually heard of and I was very happy that we did it.
Sondheim is my absolute fave! In my music in society class last year I taught a week long lesson about him and his work haha!
Paul Gordon is one of my favorite contemporary composers! He wrote Jane Eyre: the musical. Also Emma: the Musical, a musical adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, Daddy Long Legs (he likes to adapt old literature it seems, but he also has some non-adaptation stuff too). His music is just really really awesome
i have an ap music theory assignment on any modern composer id like and im doing jrb, i was really excited to see 'em on the list☺️ i listen to some of his earlier work plus the last five years(w/sherie rene scott my queen)
Benj pasek and Justin Paul definitely. I love your channel!
I love all 5 of the composers you mentioned. I love Tom Kitt's music and Pasek and Paul for more modern sounds as well!
Amazing video, and a ton of fun to watch. Yep, I'm a bit of a cliche, but... How not to love Sondheim?
I love William Finn (Falsettos, A New Brain, 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee) with my whole heart. He has such a wide range of material and his lyrics are complex and witty and he's just one of my favorites!
Also, Laurence O'Keefe (Heathers, Legally Blonde) is pretty bomb. Any time I wanna JAM to musical theatre, I turn to one of those shows for sure!
Yay! Theatre Thursday on my birthday!
Nicole Benson happy birthday!! 🌟🦄🙌🏻🌈🎉💖
Hi! I'm binge-watching your videos.
Speaking of Rogers and Hammerstein, my college is doing a Rogers and Hammerstein musical theatre showcase, and I’m doing the Lonely Room solo, which is also my audition song I’m doing that song for my dream BFA pre-screen! I’ve been working SO SO hard on that song ! It’s literally become my life !! 😭! This will be my first ever like musical theatre thing being performed infront of a live audience and I’ve never been more grateful! And I owe it to you for teaching me everything and helping me out ❤️!
oh my gosh...i love songs for a new world. its funny, heartwarming and sad all in one. the music is so beautiful and intricate and the harmonies are gorgeous. i'm extremely sad that not a lot of people know about it and i hope it gets a chance to be seen by so many other people
Pleease, do more of those videos, I love getting "educated" about Broadway and musicals! I've got my obsession relatively recently, so I still need to know a lot more about all the things.
+Mariya Bencheva glad you enjoyed it!! 🦄💖
Not guna lie, ALW's gotta be my fave. I mean he composed 3 of my top 5 favourite musicals. Also the fact that he pulled off putting SoR on Broadway/West End and combining musical theatre and rock (which I was a bit skeptical about tbh but it's AMAZING).
I loved the video. ☺
Rogers and Hammerstein are my all time favourites! My first time in a musical was in an amateur production of South Pacific and that's what made me fall in love with musical theatre :)
Fun fact : I share a birthday with Steven Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Broadway baby?!?! I think so.
my first favorite composers were rogers and hammerstein because my first show was Cinderella and i loved it😂
I LOVE Alan Menken! Especially Newsies and Aladdin, the music is so incredibly beautiful
+Frida Lindberg YES!!! So good 🙌🏻💕
Love them all!!! Also Pasek and Paul!
Hands down Rodgers and Hammerstein are my favorite duo! And Carousel is my favorite show
I ❤ Stephen Shwartz. just finished a Godspell, it was fantastic!
