Growing Papaya Trees from Seeds, Days 103-152

  • My papaya seedlings are coming along nicely. I sprayed imidacloprid pesticide and myclobutanil fungicide pre-emptively to protect my young seedlings from future complications. Spraying fungicide really removed the brakes on growth for my pomegranate seedling, so I figured there may be a lot of benefit to be derived from doing the same for my papaya seedlings, due to their high susceptibility to fungal infections, at least in the beginning phase. The stem thickness of this species is a wonder to behold: papaya trees have no problems growing upright and do not flop all over the place like many other fruit-bearing "trees." I started watering the backup pot with distilled water only to avoid salting the sand the clay soil over time. The main pot seedling is more advanced in its development than the backup seedling, but the difference is not yet big due to the slow growing nature of this species.

    I have two plants of papaya. Germinating the seeds is easy, but they seem to dye easily tafter some months.

      Germinating isn't that easy either. The seedlings damp off easily in the first few days. At what size have yours been dying?

      Not for a long time. The new leaves grew and turned green, then a lot of the old leaves got burned even in the mild winter morning sun. I'll have to see what lighting works best for it and wait for a new set of leaves to grow before I post another episode.

    It'd be cool to see you try out one of those tree grow kits like a bristle one pine or giant sequoia. Just picked mine up over Christmas and I'm letting them chill in the fridge

      Spray with neem oil and a mix of a tiny bit of dish soap and water every few days

    • @TheMelvinWei
      @TheMelvinWei  3 года назад

      You'll have to repot everything in inorganic growing mediums like sand, silt, and clay so their larvae have nothing to feed on. Or you can put imidacloprid pellets in all your pots.

      @@TheMelvinWei Much better and back at work now, though the hospital is now overwhelmed with COVID patients and short of staff who are also ill. We'll get through it. I'm just glad I wasn't severely affected. Even in our little community, we are now seeing COVID deaths. Scary stuff.

    You should try using sugar water as fertilizer for your mango not on the leaves but in the soil I've seen it done before hope you try it

    Beware of genetically modified seeds from Hawaiian papayas. You want to make sure you avoid them, and use non-gmo, organic seeds instead.
