Very well done. Unlike many videos like this, you really knew your subject and could provide good, in-depth analysis. I grew up during this time and idolized these guys and know their stories well but I really appreciate your accuracy in covering the details. One of the things that everyone forgets about the ‘89 Tour is that the time differential that Delgado lost by was almost exactly the same as the time he lost in his late start to the prologue. Makes you wonder about what could have been…🤔

Oh for sure and not to forget how much deeper he would push when on the edge of winning.

Both riders gave their hart and soul to win the 89 Tour pitty there had to be a looser at the end of an epic battle day in day out , after both riders had battled back from bad accidents Fignon with a snapped Achilles tendon and Le Mound from his near fatal shoot accident , both showed the will power to fight back to fitness at the top level, in a sport like Cycling both these Injures should have spelled and end to them ever been at the top again , never mind putting on such heroics..

I just stumbled on your videos and I can’t thank you enough for making them. This was the era that got me hooked on cycling and watching these brought me back down memory lane. The detail in your narration and the old footage was simple awesome. Images I’ve never seen before. Thank you for your hard work in making this series. Impressive stuff.

Those days played to a lot of strength. The big guys would be out in front leaving the peloton behind. Made for great long stages.

The last of the truly great Tours and the end of the last golden era in cycling. Nothing has come close to it since then. I watch cycling now and it’s just not the same. It’s formulaic and bland.

Yeah they really need to throw some curveballs into the tour. Like triple length stage in the middle, no radios, don’t tell them the courses ahead of time. Make it interesting. Like normal racers have to deal with.

@19:55 Delgado was the only GC contender who didn't have to deal with the rain in the long Dinard TT..

1989 was the absolute pinnacle of pro road racing. The sport has done nothing but decline since that point.

@RollinRat i agree. Just think of the mental gymnastics you go through in a one hour crit. It must have been exhausting to play the same game for 3 weeks. I would like to see the guys now play the same way. The racing is already good. Now imaging the unknowns. No wattage computers or radios. Hell and make em’ race it all at once with no support. Teach em to be tough like the dudes in the 20’s
