Joe Murray: The First Mountain Bike Racing Legend
In the early days of mountain bike racing, just after the founding fathers of dirt pedalers laid dug the roots at Mt. Tamalpais, a young racer named Joe Murray came out of Marin. He became the early dominant entry in mountain bike racing and was the first mountain biker to be introduced into the cycling hall of fame. Still around today, he has helped shape the industry we ride in.

Death of the 2 stroke there, the AMA and the powers that be didn’t think 400cc was enough went to 426cc then finally 450cc 4 stroke vs 250cc 2 stroke. Then a 250f vs a 125 2 stroke seems fair ? No way tell me I’m wrong I’ll wait Dc the AMA took our expensive sport to a next level wealthy man’s sport with these expensive 4 strokes.

This gives you an idea of how dangerous bike racing can be. Without a doubt, it is one of the most dangerous of sports, not quite up there with the Isle of Man motorcycle races, but dangerous enough to cause massive injuries and, on rare occasion, death.

Personally I appreciate both 4 strokes and 2 strokes. I have owned both and each have their own personality and how you ride it. My main gripe with 4 strokes is how they allowed the cc displacement rules against 2 strokes, I think the gap from a 250 2 stroke should be at MOST competing against a 400cc 4 stroke. It’s also sad that there’s no more 2 strokes available on the market as they are so much more affordable for most people. Nowadays a 450F costs so much money and much harder to work on yourself.

I remember watching the live telecast, how hard Beloki as pushing it down that descent and my heart was in my throat watching. He was so brave. The worst part wasn't only the fall, but seeing and hearing his suffering in the aftermath. In the pit of your stomach you asked yourself if someone could recover from it. Two years later he placed 75th in the Tour De France, and I remember thinking It was terrible, and very sad to see something like that happen to such a high achieving champion. Your heart really went out for Joseba Beloki.

It was epic....Greg was the best rider in 85 and 86. Hinault did not deserve the 85 tour. If Greg's management had kept him from turkey hunting, he surely would have won five, including 87 & 88, and classics, too. He was riding like a beast in those days. I was working at the 86 tour and the 89 worlds and quite a few other big races, too. good years!

It would have been nice if the narrator could pronounce "Mille Miglia" correctly (the "g" is silent). He also got it wrong that Portago's crash caused it to become illegal to race on Italian roads. While the crash did, indeed, end the Mille Miglia itself, another famous Italian road race, the Targa Florio, continued until 1973.

I got here searching up Joe Murray A:\Drive and B:\Drive tires that I have on my old steel Raleigh mtb that I run errands on. The rear finally let go today, the sidewall was torn and it was starting to bubble. From what I can tell the tires were factory equipment on some early 90s Konas. I found them in an alley riding home from work one afternoon, so I grabbed them and have been running them for years. I had never heard of Joe Murray but it was interesting to see some mtb history and learn that frame breakage was such a common issue in the 80s, gonna guess that front suspension eased that somewhat but probably welding and material tech too. Props to the early racers riding on the old steel stuff with forearm front suspension. I've been there.

I enjoyed your report and I think it is actually healthier for the individual and the sport when someone's time at the top is relatively short, a few years or so. And it was that way in pro motocross racing in the '70s as about three championships seemed to be the summit for the sport's greatest riders. And for that matter, the sport of mountain bike racing as it originated was relatively short, no? It was a huge, cool deal there for a time, the perfect blend of motocross and BMX. But things come back and it looks like gravel racing is now the perfect blend of mountain biking and road racing. O the games we people play. 😀

There are always times when racing gets stale when someone wins too much. Mercedes, McGrath, and even though I’m a fan Schurter. Unless there is some epic rivalry those years slog until something changes. I think gravel is a great new unhacked form of racing. The length creates and the juxtaposition of bike type and terrain make every race interesting. I think that’s what MTB had when it started. Now we rely on a heavy diversity of talent to make entertaining racing. It’s been good too.

@@freebooterracingco.2440 And I even felt that way about Richard Petty in NASCAR racing when my Dad was working with the team when they ran Riverside and Ontario in the early '70s, King Richard was a super groovy guy, very friendly, the perfect ambassador of the sport, but let's see some wins spread around, lol. And they were, actually, just that it did seem that he won a lot and he did and good for him, that's racing and you can't tell it in my little thumbnail from early '75 in Frankfurt, West Germany after we had moved from Pacifica a few months earlier, but I am wearing a pair of Petty crew pants from the '73 season, bright red with STP Oil Treatment over white stripes down the sides. And that was my childhood from '67 to '75, eight to fifteen, riding my Sting-Ray everywhere and pretending to be a race car driver or Evel Knievel or a motocross racer. And funny, tho' I returned to the Bay Area in '79 as a young disc jockey and always a fan of two-wheeled action, I had no idea of the mountain bike scene in Marin County. Zero. I was a regular reader of motorcycle and BMX magazines, and that year I bought a JMC BMX bike and raced Novice in NBA races just for kicks as I had missed that scene as a high schooler in Europe, but mountain bikes were completely unknown to me and I was only a handful of miles from Marin County in '79, being Rockin' Robb Stewart at KNBA the Mighty 1190 in Vallejo, good times. And it all remains fascinating to me, all the history of racers and builders and events, like the race Joe Murray won at age 15. And thanks to the USO and 7-Up in Frankfurt in '75, I got to win a bike race at age 15 on my Rixie 10-speed. And I was ready for that race as I always commuted to school on my bike and always chased moped en route and some of those were hard to catch, lung-busting and leg-busting pursuits. But I was always cheery about it if I caught the lazy dude on his tailpipe-draggin' moped. 😀
